Backstory: Umi has no parents. It’s not that he’s an orphan, his parents may very well still be alive, but he has no recollection of them. In the beginning of his life, he spent his first five years in an abandoned house. Somehow he learned how to care for himself during this time, although, he occasionally would see wispy creatures in his “home” that he summoned himself, often times on accident. They were pretty helpful towards him, and also taught him a few life skills in his five years in the lifeless home. It was these small wisps who told Umi his name.

His five years of shelter in the abandoned house came to an end when his home burned down one dry September night, unsurprisingly. By this time, he had a better grasp on how his summoning of the wispy creatures of his home worked, and was able to summon two to guide him to the next part of his journey, where he left the stark empty land he’d resided in for the city, where the summoned creatures guided him.

Umi resided in alleyways for a long time, about 3 years before meeting Metro. It didn’t take much for Metro to catch Umi’s attention, he looked far different than many of the pedestrians he would often see walking down the streets and sidewalk. Metro lacked the general appearance of any set animal, or even hybrid. Metro simply was an anomaly among the traffic of normalcy. It didn’t take Metro long to sense Umi’s presence and power, and he quickly took the young nine year old child under his care and watch. Umi was able to move from alleyways life to living in a shack.

For 10 years after their meeting, Metro oftentimes would glorify the importance of Umi’s gift, merely known as “The Calling”. It was the ability which allowed him to summon creatures and monsters alike, even if he was only able to summon mere wisps of them as a child. Metro often taught him on furthering his ability, to the point where he was able to form life forms that were physical creatures, much more than mere wisps. Unfortunately, as these physical creatures never seemed to vanish into thin air, it took even more training for Umi to be able to reverse his summonings, which was appropriately known as a “Reverse Call” by Metro.

Metro wanted Umi to invest the maximum amount of time possible on training his gift to the strongest it could be, and therefore didn’t want to waste time sending Umi to an official school (until high school). Rather, Umi was homeschooled by Metro on all he needed to know for each grade level, until giving in and enrolling Umi in high school, where Umi has to refrain from using his ability of “calling” and summoning beings. Occasionally at school, he would catch a glimpse of a girl, a shih tzu, who often passed him in the hallways as he walked towards his last class of the day.

In his second to last year of highschool, he  finally decided he would make an attempt to get to know the girl, as he had been wanting to officially meet her for quite a while. He ended up getting along very well with her, and they ended up walking from school together, with Umi dropping off the girl, Kiyoi, at her house before running to his home.

Over the course of Umi’s last remaining years of highschool, he always spent time with Kiyoi, and not really anyone else. He and Kiyoi were both loners before meeting each other, and they enjoyed each other’s company very much. On Umi’s 17th birthday, Umi asked Kiyoi out, nervously. They’ve been together ever since, for over four years. And they’ve been pretty much unstoppable since day one, they worked two jobs part time over their last year of highschool together as a team.

After graduating high school, Umi informed Metro that he would be moving out as he moved to a small apartment complex near a college he and Kiyoi has chosen. Metro was very opposed to the idea, as he found the idea of college a waste of time when Umi could be training his potential as the powerful being he was. He also thought that by moving out, Umi would forget what he and Metro had worked for for 10 years, making Umi’s power a force to potentially protect the world (a bit of a stretch), or at least their city and their home. However, Metro, powerless over the situation, ended up allowing Umi to do as he pleased.

Umi and Kiyoi decided they would share an apartment and split rent, to make the  cost less for them in order to save money. However, after the first year of college life, Kiyoi had second thoughts on what she would want to do at the end of the day, and what college would serve her in a job she did not like or was not sure about. Both her and Umi had the same thought on college, and one summer day, Kiyoi proposed the idea of opening up a tea shop in a small two story building left abandoned in the downtown of their city. Between the two of them, they were able to afford buying the building and supplies, and made quite the profit in their very first year of operating. They took up residence on the second floor of the shop, and live together today still.

Today, Umi still works side by side with his partner in crime at their tea shop, although occasionally, matters rise where Metro will get Umi to help with potentially dangerous situations and crimes in the city, as his ability to summon creatures and monsters gives Umi an advantage in helping others in bad times. Metro and Kiyoi are still quite passive aggressive towards one another, and Umi lives each and every day as another day to be with the person he loves.
