Bio:
Shield Mage is a unicorn who knew about barrier spells. She knew how to cast them, but also knew of the strain and concentration needed to maintain one. So she looked and found a mirror that could help her enhance a shield spell. With the mirror, she practiced and learned how to cast shields on 1-2 other objects without much strain on her. She then earned her cutie mark for mastering the mirror spell.
After a year or so with her new power, she saw an alicorn named Vanguard, who offered for her to help her protect Equestria. She now travels with her.
