When travelling plague doctor Ben cures Charlotte of her particular ailment, she really didn't expect to come back as a vampire. But she knows her being cured like this is an impossible miracle that Ben only achieved through his desperation in saving her, and while she's still navigating what it's like to be a supernatural monster, she vows to spend her newly immortal life helping others, as Ben does.

Serving as Ben's nurse assistant, while it takes time for her to learn the rules of the trade, she has the benefit of never being able to get sick, because of the vampirism and all. This way, she's never at risk of carrying disease and inadvertently harming other patients, nor is her assistance to Ben a risk to herself.
