Ashbeetle lives in a distant future (or as distant as can be) where humanity destroys each other in World War III. The entire planet is damaged, the cities are uninhabited, and there are only a few humans left trying to survive. The same applies here to Beetle and the other animals.

Unlike most animals, overwhelmed by the brutal, cruel life in the post-apocalyptic era, he is unusually positive and cheerful. However, although he seems naive at first glance, he is actually very wary of strangers in city, and while he is always willing to talk to them or help them out, he never lets his guard down. He is quite talkative and sometimes makes inappropriate jokes because he talks before he thinks. He is also quite honest and only lies when it might save his life.

Ashbeetle was already born in a post-apocalyptic age. As a kitten, he traveled with his parents until they arrived in town for food. (His parents wanted to avoid the city because of the high concentration of people and animals, but they had no more food and were slowly starving to death. So they took a risk and headed to the city). Ashbeetle immediately fell in love with the city, despite how ruined and dangerous it was. His fascination with the people became apparent at a young age, and the city... It was a human creation. Everything interested him. Unfortunately, his parents died while foraging for food (Ashbeetle never found out exactly what happened to them. Something could have eaten them, or they could have fallen somewhere... There's also the possibility that they left him on purpose, but Ashbeetle refuses to believe it). So he was left alone in the city. He was quite desperate until he came across an macaw parrot in one of the houses. Understandably, he first tried to eat it before discovering that the parrot (her name was Talulla) could speak cat language. And somehow, Ashbeetle ended up staying with Talulla. Ara said she was very old and that she remembered a time before the end of the world and often told him what it looked like. She also knew how to find food and knew her way around town, so Ashbeetle soon became a self-proclaimed 'expert' on surviving the post-apocalypse. Talulla is still alive, and though Ashbeetle now wanders the city looking for new places, he visits her often.
