Kagura is a playable character in the Guilty Gear series who makes her first appearance in Guilty Gear - Strive-. She is a shrine maiden of Japanese origin whose colony has deemed her their leader and Head Guuji, an undesired position which causes her great stress.

Kagura is a relatively short, yet curvaceous young woman of Japanese descent. She has black eyes and long, dark brown hair with a single strand falling in between her eyes. The rest of her hair is kept out of her face by two white, gold-trimmed sakura-shaped hairclips she dons on each side of her head. When initially introduced, she dons a white kitsune mask with red and gold detailing and golden bells with red tassels on the side.

As for her outfit, Kagura dons a low-cut, Japanese-style white shirt with pink trim and stitching. She also dons detached white kimono sleeves with a pink sakura pattern, pink stitching, pink trim, and bells with pink tassels. These sleeves are held onto her person with the use of small red belts with golden buckles. The red belt across her chest reads everlasting oath. She wears a short, pink pleated skirt with a matching pink belt reminiscent of an obi. A large pink ribbon lies at the center of her obi and is wrapped by red belts with golden buckles, tipped with golden bells with red tassels, and accentuated by a shide. On her right leg, she dons a white stocking with pink trim, held up by a red belt with a gold buckle. On both feet, she dons black sandals with pink straps and a thick red strap with a golden buckle. She wields a black, red, and gold kagura suzu as a weapon.

Kagura is naturally gentle, kind, and nurturing, but her devotion to her duties makes this rather difficult for most to see. This is because, in order to protect her people, she puts on a cold and formal front so as to give off the illusion of being an powerful and unshakeable leader. She is especially hostile towards those from outside the colony, whom she refers to as Outlanders, as she thinks of them as the same people who have caged and taken advantage of the Japanese. In reality, however, she is the same nervous young girl she was the moment she was appointed as shogun, and is constantly questioning if she is worthy or even capable of the role that has been thrust upon her.

Due to her hostility towards outlanders and her duty to stay within and oversee her colony, she is rather naïve when it comes to her knowledge of the outside world. Much of what she's learned of the outside world is from novels and the stories of elders, many of which are highly outdated, and therefore lead to quite a few misunderstandings.

A newborn Kagura was found abandoned in a coal mine located somewhere in the United Kingdoms of Illyria. The miners who discovered her turned her over to the Illyrian government, who surmised that she was of pure Japanese ancestry due to the tremendous amount of ki she possessed, even as an infant. She was thereby placed into one of the colonies, where she was given the name Kagura. She grew up alongside Baiken and Anji Mito, the latter of whom she was raised in the same orphanage as.

One day, Anji Mito ran away without a word, but not before making off with Zessen—the focus of the colony's dimensional barrier, which thus began to progressively weaken every day. An adolescent Kagura ventured out of the colony, taking it upon herself to find another way to protect its people, both to keep them safe and to prevent her people from hunting Anji down to take back the sacred treasure.

For reasons Kagura herself cannot explain, she found herself drawn to Underworld Hill, where she was recovered from as a baby. It is there that she met Izuna, who unbeknownst to her is a distant ancestor of hers. It is for this reason that she was able to survive after stumbling into the pseudo-space, a feat which many normal humans would not be able to survive due to its proximity to the Backyard. She spent the next couple of years residing with the yokai of Underworld Hill, who cared for her and taught her both combat and magic, including a powerful barrier spell that could protect her colony the same way the dimensional barrier had.

Kagura was fifteen years old when she decided that her training had been efficient, ultimately leaving Underworld Hill and erecting a new magical barrier to protect her colony. She was immediately hailed a hero by her people who appointed her as leader and Head Guuji, a duty she felt wholly unprepared and underqualified for. Despite her desire for a simpler youth, she took on the role so as to not disappoint her people.

  • She is named after Kagrra, a Japanese visual kei folk rock band.
