Aesir, The Fury of Aesedia --born Eira Nygaard; called Eir by those close to her --born in a land outside of Aesedia to boatbuilder parents on a small, often icebound island. her parents' business held an important role in the economy of the island's inhabitants as fishing was a major source of income and food, and a solid boat was needed to reach the island's mainland --however, Eira's father passed away of an accident when Eira was 12 and her younger brother, Skari, was 8. Eira's mother begged her to would always protect her brother, and she agreed, swearing on his life to care for him --In the following years, the ice around the island grew thicker, more persistent; the winters more ferocious. Fishing became more difficult, as even the strongest boats could not sail many months of the year. While Eira and Skari's mother refused to leave the island, the siblings, now 19 and 15, knew they could not stay. They left the island for the mainland, seeking jobs, and vowing to send money back to their mother --However, good jobs on the mainland were scarce, and Eira and Skari did not have the skills for most professions. Moreover, few would hire as young as Skari, and Eira refused to leave her brother alone while she worked for fear of his safety. Both siblings were strong from work in the boat building industry and hardy from many years on the ice-torn island. So, the pair ended up working for less reputable businesses: bars, crime rings, drug runners; anyone who would benefit from strong and scrappy kids who wouldn't ask any questions. --Over the years, the pair became well-known by the dark corners of society, and were recruited for more and more dangerous, secretive jobs. Over time, they began to work separately, as once they were both of age it was clear Skari no longer needed Eira's protection. --However, will Eira was able to keep her wits about her and recognize the depravity of many of her bosses, Skari was not. He was too young when he entered this worlds to fully comprehend that there was a law-abiding world outside of their own. So, while Eira kept some honor about her work (not a ton-- she still did things she regrets to this day, but at least she knows it was fucked up), Skari did not, and only fell deeper into the criminal underworld. In that, he grew more paranoid, less trusting, until even his sister could no longer be trusted. Greed began to come before blood for Skari, as he took jobs Eir would not approve of and spent longer away from their shared home. Until, one day, he was gone. --Though distraught, Eira kept up her work, needing to send money back to her mother. She didn't see her brother for over a year until, while acting as a mercenary and guard for a corrupt local government, she found him, acting as muscle in an attempt to steal from her employer. While Eira was just happy to see him again, Skari turned on her, believing she would get in the way of his work and blow his chances on his current job. Though Eira had no loyalty to this government, Skari attacked without listening to logic or reason, and Eir had no choice but to defend herself or let herself fall to his fangs. Believing she had a chance to change his mind, make him see that she would not stand in his way, she fought, desperately trying to talk him out of it. However, he was beyond reason. Eira fought to survive, hoping to spare him, however, Skari only saw two outcomes: victory, or death. In the end, Eir had to choose for him: refusing to die herself, she was forced to fight back. In the end, she watched him crumble to the ground, bloodied and still. She left town that day, believing she had killed him --After much trauma™️ she resettled in Aesedia and sought work. This time, she was hired by the Empress as a mercenary, as rumors of her prowess in battle had traveled even to the distant lands. She agreed to this work under the condition that her name be kept private, and that she take on an alias for her work. She settled on the name Aesir, combining Aesedia and Eir, and began to build her reputation in these lands. She has been effective as an enforcer of the Empire's might against it's enemies, earning her titles and much acclaim. --However, she lives in guilt for what she has done, and for slaying the brother she swore to protect. She changed her name in hopes that her mother would never find out what she did, and that anyone close to her bother would never find her. Yet, she still fears her past and believes the ghosts she left behind may return at any time --Her brother might actually be alive without her knowledge??? More on that when I actually have ideas
