everything changed when the fire nation kur-skan attacked. Harlem's formative years were spent in relative happiness—sure his parents were a bit strict (what Asian parents weren't), and he had two younger siblings with an age gap he wished wasn't 10 and 12 years respectively (at least he had his sister, who was only a year younger than him), but he knew he had a home and a family and that's what mattered.
On a bright April morning, some higher power decided it didn't care what mattered.
(Enter Kur-skan.) When Harlem is a month away from turning 18, he starts waking up to black feathers in his bed. Try as he does to ignore it, the steadily worsening symptoms are harder to repress: black veins, serrated fingers, and a voice that is definitely not his. When he starts to perceive himself as a danger to his family, Harlem leaves a few months after he turns 18.
For the next 9 years, he stakes it out on his own and pushes away anyone who comes near. That is, until he winds up in a certain doctor's infirmary...
Very full of self-loathing, for both the wrong and right reasons. He's a bit of a loner (by choice) because he doesn't want to hurt anyone.
choice of weapons are two serrated short scythes/sickles (kur-skan's fossilized limbs) that sit at his hip.
has a little evil voice in his head (hi kur-skan) who is also the reason for the bird parts (acts like a "built-in armor", as pj puts it).
has a habit to cover up said bird parts with clothes and his hair. (later, when he's more comfortable with himself, he agrees to get his hair cut.)
before kur-skan, his character role was "the drifter".
really, really does not like his hands and throat being touched.

companionship (very picky with it. mostly out of lack of trust.)
joking around (as a defense mechanism. deflects a lot as if he can't stand someone perceiving how he actually feels, when it's all he actually wants.)

birds. ravens mostly. (always thinks it's kur-skan watching, even though she's in his head and doesn't need to watch him.)
hearing too many voices at one time. (often overstimulates him, even if it's not that many voices.)

stand in sibling i mean his doctor. who he hugs sometimes as prescribed by said doctor. if he chose not to die, it'd be because of her.

words cannot express how much they love pissing each other off. they still care about each other, but it's hard to show.

he is so homiesexual with hyrum for the bit that no one really knows if its a bit anymore. (hyrum abhors it, but it just eggs harlem on.)
