Jane Carr

(Presently: Jane St. Vincent-King)
She/her

Story

Jane was born into a family ravished by poverty in Regency Period England. To lessen the number of mouths to feed and bodies to care for, young Jane was given to the St. Vincent family, as their head, Mrs. Joy St. Vincent, was looking for a friend for her daughter, Elinor. The two, though rather opposite of the other, fit like puzzle pieces, and were rarely without each other throughout their childhood together.

Jane's status plagued her throughout her life. As she grew older and found an affinity for academics and language, she was hired instead as one of the tutors for the St. Vincent family to help some of the younger St. Vincent girls. Despite this new profession, as well as living with and being raised by the St. Vincents, a very wealthy, powerful, and honorable family, she had always been at their employ; Always to be seen as lower than dirt, as her birth family has nothing to their name. So long as Jane had the Carr name stuck to her, the metaphorical shackles would follow. Because of this, society's views on her became her own: that she is of the dust and dirt, from the earth, and is far less spectacular than everyone else-- worthless. Thanks to Elinor pulling some strings, Jane had a possible "in" to a higher-status job and finally an opportunity to challenge this societal ranking as a translator with the Kings, another highly influential family who deals in horses. Elinor and Jane optimistically headed to London for an interview with the then-head of the King family... which never came because he fucking died.

A replacement interview was never to be, as the opportunity itself was once-in-a-lifetime. Staying spirit-crushed in London with Elinor, the two hit up a pub, where Jane locks eyes with... Her 💗💗 Ms. Beatrix King, sole heiress to the King name and everything it brings... The two knew it star-crossed upon first gaze. Of course, it could never be that simple-- not in Regency England; not in Good Society. Elinor, seeing the flames of Desire in her friends' eyes, tries to hook them up. Coincidentally, she does this by Fucking Over Beatrix's current close-friend-but-partner-in-some-case (very complicated), Valentine Mulgraves, whose family deals in horseshoes and had business relations with the Kings, by 1) recommending another horseshoe business to Beatrix and 2) recommending Jane instead of Valentine for Beatrix’s partner, talking her up real good. Even more coincidentally, Mr. Valentine Mulgraves decides to also visit the pub and catches the two ladies "Getting Along Real Well"!! Awfulness ensues. That is a mess. Jane proposes to Beatrix. Beatrix accepts but they have to keep it a secret because of the extreme difference in social class-- it would never be allowed. Elinor, infamous gossip who is just really excited about her best friend's engagement, accidentally shares the news. This is very bad for them. This is so bad for them. You don't understand. Some would say it is... friendship-ending. Which is what happened. Jane, completely devastated by her best friend letting her secret relationship out and causing her and her fiancé to have to essentially avoid each other in entirety lest Jane gets shot or something (not really but pretty close), ends their friendship and takes a vow of silence against Elinor. Though they live in the same home and Jane still works for the St. Vincents, the bridge between the two women has been burned. As well as the bridge between Valentine and Beatrix. And the bridge between Elinor and Valentine (but this is one-sided on Valentine's part). Beatrix and Jane are a complicated mess. Beatrix and Elinor are just fine.

Flash-forward 3 years later. We are in the English countryside and fate has it that all four of our protagonists are in each other's company again, more or less, for better or worse. Jane's goal in-game is to marry her secret fiance Beatrix King before Beatrix decides to marry for money instead, as her father insists and Beatrix low-key knows would be best for her recently financially-struggling family business. Jane somehow had to gain some money or status for herself so she can marry Beatrix, and fast. Various shenanigans, trials and tribulations occur between the four of them... Beatrix also lowkey cheats-or-almost-cheats on Jane a couple times in the game with Beatrix's ex-lover Valentine and also Elinor BUT through these events and with Valentine's support, Jane gains a bit of confidence and learns that she deserves some bit of respect, sticking up for herself (lovely character development...) and working through it with Beatrix.

After a long history of hard losses for Jane, life turns around and hits her in the face one after the other with stupendous wins. At the end of the game, Jane and Beatrix defy society's expectations and outwardly announce their engagement (surprisingly, Beatrix's dad didnt kill Jane and actually has some respect for the girl). Jane and Elinor make up due largly in part of Elinor's diligent work in the background pulling strings to get Jane a job as a professor at the King's College in London, and helping Jane to acquire the St. Vincent name (despite the status of their relationship because Elinor cares about Jane damn it and it's her way of apologizing!). Elinor's mother adopts Jane into the St. Vincent family, giving Jane the high status and money she was looking for (along with marrying Beatrix, double status, and becoming a professor at a prestigious university, triple status), and Valentine and Elinor have a classic enemies-to-lovers. The two couples have several marvelous weddings before Jane and Beatrix move off to London for Jane's work, and everyone is happy!

What a crazy story.

Personality

Jane is very soft spoken, stiff, well-mannered, and timid, but is infatuated with her career/area of study (language, baby!) with a drive to pursue it to break the cycle of her family's poverty. She makes up for her awkwardness and simplicity with her intellect, wisdom, and heart. Jane would very much rather go along with other people's plans than to speak out, rarely voices her opinions on things, and prefers to stay in instead of going out to parties and the like. She is prone to anxiety and indecision, but sometimes when prodded, finds it hard to avoid being terribly blunt.
Through this story with the help of her friends, Jane has grown a good bit of confidence in herself and sees that she has value and that her words and thoughts matter, regardless of status. She isn't just "of the dirt"; she, too, can sparkle.

Appearance

Jane is a cool-toned pale. She has a square face with a strong jawline and cheekbones, and a little tiny dimple in her chin. She has slightly down-sloped large dark blue eyes with dark lashes. Her nose is on the stronger side: a little longer on her face and straight. Her lips are pointed and her resting face is rather blank, jaw clenched slightly. Her dark brown hair is braided into a low bun with two small braids on each side of her head also leading to the bun, and baby bangs falling just above her raised, arched eyebrows. I'd say her eyes and brows are the most captivating part of her face, the part you notice first!

Design Notes

  • 5'9", stands rather poised but close to herself; wants to come off dignified but can't help her reclusive nature.
  • Normally dresses rather plainly, but put-together and professional, to try and appear as more upstanding than her status determines.
  • Her introvertedness is clear through her tight jaw and avoidance of eye contact, how she would rather keep her thoughts to herself than to share them, wanting to be unseen.

Relationships

Beatrix King
She/her

(Previously Secret) Wife

The naive sole heiress to the King family, an established and successful family of pedigree horse breeders. Of course, thanks to this business, Beatrix is an proudly proclaimed Horse Girl and has a very high level of comfortability and eye for the finer things in life. The only living members of the immediate King family are Beatrix and her stern but doting father, Captain Edwin King, and Beatrix holds her family at the core of her very being. Gleeful, extroverted, fun-loving, stubborn, and bold, her natural beauty and aura of extravagance causes most around her to swoon and fawn for the girl with little coaxing. Similarly, her own bad habit of falling easily in love with anyone who is sweet to her has gotten her in trouble with Jane (and others) on more than one occassion.

Beatrix and Jane met one fateful night in London, and that was all that was needed to secure their futures to each other. As the world would have it, they could never be; the rigidity of Regency social structure forbids the lowly from marrying the esteemed, for what could the former ever offer? In addition, once Beatrix's father, Captain King, caught word of the alleged engagement, he himself personally forbade it. Beatrix's heart is with her family, and as the King family business began to face financial struggles, it was up to Beatrix to determine her family's future. Her ultimatum: marry for the betterment of her family's prosperity (Mr. James Moneybags has wealth and an impressive status...), or for her own feelings and happiness. Both dealing with their own extreme stresses under the pressure of ticking time, Beatrix and Jane did what they had to and what they could, by dancing around the Captain and keeping their relationship a secret for three years, bearing whatever struggle life threw their way... Until finally, they defied the norms together and married at last. The two later move to London so Jane can pursue her new professor career at London's King's College.

Elinor St. Vincent
She/her

(Previously Ex-) Bestie-Sister

Elinor, eldest daughter of the highly influential St. Vincent family, is brash and selfish. As a bored heiress living in Regency, she takes to gossip to entertain herself, placing little import on the effects of her meddling, finding it extremely difficult to keep a secret. As a result (and much to her mother's dismay), her outward appearance to sociaty is just that: blunt, selfish, and hard-headed. She is not easy to love and does not want to be. Despite this cold, hard outer shell, those very few who are close to her see the genuine hardworking nature and talent she harbors in secret. Elinor is one to show rather than tell, preferring her "good deeds" go unnoticed. Elinor wrote and starred alongside Valentine Mulgraves in her ballet adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, one of the few times she allowed her peers to see her shine. The most beautiful thing about the harsh lines that encompass her features are her feet in a pair of ballet slippers.

Introduced as young children and growing in the St. Vincent household together as a pair thicker than thieves, Elinor and Jane were two who didn’t seem to have been able to work, but did regardless. Nothing could break them apart... until it did—— by Elinor’s own hands. Caught up in the excitement and eager to share the news, Elinor lets slip of Jane and Beatrix's engagement-- their secret engagement, nearly costing the couple their entire relationship, and more. Accustomed to living her life uncaring of anything or anyone else, she begins to learn that her actions just may have consequences, thanks to this single slip-up that persists for years. The two do not speak until the four society members are reintroduced at a whirlwind party for the second eldest St. Vincent sister Anna, where Elinor vows to help Jane as much as she can without Jane, or anyone else, learning of her altruism. Their relationship remains rocky until the two are forced to communicate and repair their bond, and Elinor sneakily succeeds in not only getting Jane a high-status job as a professor in London, but also a genuine family, as she is officially adopted into the St. Vincent family. Now the two remain closer than ever; not as friends, but as sisters.

Valentine Mulgraves
He/him

Friend-to-Bestie

Son of a farrier, known socialite and partier, walking punchline, and not a half-bad dancer, Valentine is pretty, witty, and cannot stand to be ignored. While he can be a little dense when it comes to his own feelings, he feels passionately and truly, and always tries to stand by what he thinks is right. Additionally naturally stubborn, dramatic (especially when it’s sexy), and sharp-tongued, he learns to deal with the truth of himself and his feelings and finds that keeping an open mind and not taking himself too seriously has its own set of benefits. The Mulgraves had a prominent business in horseshoeing-- past tense (hats off to Elinor). Since the Incident, Valentine had been seeking a new source of fortune without staining his perfect reputation further, searching for ways to make up for what was lost (both monetarily and emotionally...💔).
Valentine and Jane knew very little of one another before the story began – to Valentine, Jane was the woman that the love of his life had left him for, and to Jane, Valentine was her fiancée’s former best friend who she never spoke much of. However, as time carried on, the two found they were more similar than alike and both ultimately wanted the best for one another. Valentine worked to ensure Beatrix was truly deserving of someone like Jane and that Jane understood her own worth, coming to Jane with the truth about her fiancée when no one else would. In turn, Jane helped Valentine realize the truth about his feelings for Elinor and did all she could to see to their happiness. The two are very good friends now, often enjoying a diverse array of beverages and good conversation in their free time.

Joy St. Vincent
She/her

Employer-to-Adoptive-Mom

New Money head of the St. Vincent family. Thanks to Mrs. Joy St. Vincent's natural charisma and genuine love for parties and socializing, the St. Vincents have grown into a powerful family and deal in making connections for themselves and others. Joy loves her four children, Elinor, Anna, Cassandra, and her infant son, having a great time, schmoozing, and finding information... If you see her writing in a journal, no u don't!!

Joy took in Jane as a friend for her daughter Elinor when they were both young children, and later employed her as a home tutor. She always seemed to see potential in Jane and viewed her as family, regardless of Jane's status or current position as an employee of the family. She displayed this faith in Jane by essentially having her co-direct Elinor's Romeo and Juliet ballet adaptation and, before Jane was to leave the family's employ for a higher opportunity, officially adopted her into the St. Vincent family.
