Gadget was separated from his biological family at a young age and was taken in by a group of thieves/treasure hunters called the Scavengers, and as he grew up he found that he had a knack for anything mechanical, he would learn through reverse engineering any gadgets he found, hence his nickname, Gadget. However the Scavengers would often exploit him and his technology at a young age to take from others, all while justifying to him that what they were doing was for the best, but Gadget as a young kid always wanted to help people with his creations, and also eventually, find someone from his biological family. However, not everyone was necessarily trying to take advantage of Gadget. Apollo was a sort of older brother to Gadget, a young wolf who would show him how to defend himself. As they grew up together, Gadget clung more and more to Apollo. Both being part of the Scavengers, it was a rule that anyone who was old enough to participate would have to help on excavation or “retrieval” missions. The bounty this time, was a valuable gem. It was Gadget’s first time, and he was scared of the danger. Yet Apollo reassured her that no matter what, Apollo would be there to keep Gadget safe. The mission was a risky one, and the gem was in their grasp. Apollo, being nimble, took the gem, and froze. The surrounding area began to collapse around the group, and he wouldn’t be able to go along with the rest of the group on the other side of the room. In a moment of fear, desperation, and greed, he ran to escape by himself. He was never seen in the group after that day, exiled permanently, and Gadget was heartbroken. He was bitter and confused, confused why someone he loved would leave her on a whim. Gadget’s fondness for Apollo turned into hatred. From then on, Gadget felt that he wasn’t truly close to anyone in the Scavengers, and his desire to have a proper close family bond only grew.

Fast forward to her being 20 years old, he hears about a certain 2-tailed fox and just has this gut feeling that this might be someone from his long lost family, and goes to meet him, still being shadowed by the Scavengers, who have their eyes set on the biggest bounty yet: the Master Emerald. The Scavengers tell Gadget to create an invention that could harness the emerald's energy all while under the guise of it being to "harness energy to help others". Gadget agrees naively, captivated by the thought of his work being used to do something good. After a while of searching for Tails, Gadget and Tails meet in a joyous reunion, finding that they have an intense amount in common! They bond over their shared love of machinery and general nerdy demeanors. However, Knuckles is suspicious of him, he has a feeling something is off, but Tails and Sonic are reassuring that everything is probably fine… After a while of bonding, Tails, and Gadget go on an adventure together on the Tornado 2. Gadget wants to take a detour to Angel Island (instructed by the Scavengers to do so), and Tails is reluctant but agrees. Knuckles is absent from the equation, as he and Sonic were informed of a mysterious “urgent crisis”. With Gadget slowly approaching the Master Emerald, Tails begins to become uneasy, urging Gadget to avoid touching it. Gadget, who is lost in his thoughts of being able to do something to greatly help others, places the device on the Master Emerald. A small click… A buzz turns into a whirr. Green chaos energy in the form of electricity begins to fire out of the emerald, suddenly turning the emerald dull. Gadget is confused and frightened. Why didn’t it work? Suddenly, the loud sound of engines begins to deafen the two foxes, and an Egg Carrier comes into view. It is soon revealed that not only Eggman is on the carrier, but the Scavengers as well. The Scavengers and Eggman worked to create a decoy to distract Knuckles and Sonic, while Eggman had tampered with one of Gadget’s devices, which was “borrowed” by a Scavenger member previously. Eggman had offered the Scavengers a position in power in the Eggman Empire, which was an opportunity they gladly took. One of the members calls Gadget to join them, and Gadget hurt and betrayed, stands frozen. Suddenly, Eggman’s carrier releases a large crane, grabbing the Master Emerald off its pedestal and pulling it into its interior. Angel Island begins to collapse, and Tails tries to grab Gadget as it falls. Tails’ grip begins to slip, but thankfully, Sonic and Knuckles are there in the nick of time to take them to safety. Knuckles seems to automatically know that Gadget was in some way involved and is both angry at himself for letting the Master Emerald go unguarded and at Gadget for “using” Tails. Tails is just as hurt, at a loss for words, thinking that Gadget did this on purpose. While Sonic tries to de-escalate the situation, Gadget stands up and runs away. Tails keeps Sonic from running after her, “Everyone just needs some time”. Eggman seemingly won that day. A week goes by without any sign of Gadget, and with the crew scrambling to find the Chaos Emeralds, they eventually realize that they need Gadget’s help. Gadget was the one who created the device that neutralized the Master Emerald, he would know how to counter the device, even if it was tampered with. Gadget comes out of hiding when Tails talks to him, clearing up the situation and what had transpired. Gadget then reconciles with Sonic and Knuckles. He goes on to help them defeat Eggman and return the Master Emerald. The Scavengers are in shock over Gadget’s betrayal, and Gadget separates from the Scavengers completely, realizing how they have used him over the years. Eventually, Team Sonic and Gadget build a small workshop and home for himself, where he can continue to create devices that can better help the world.
