BACKSTORY SUMMARY

S.C. is the youngest of 6. His family was poor; his mother was a stay-at-home-mom with mental disabilities and his father was a professor at a nearby college. Their main source of income-- government disability and teaching wages-- unfortunately put them in the slums in a Japanese-American neighborhood in America.
His mother suffered primarily from Bipolar Disorder and Postpartum Depression, but because of the low income they both incurred, she was not able to receive appropriate help.
S.C. has an odd gift: the ability to see the dead, or souls, spirits, demons, etc., that wander in and out of various dimensions. He was told that he was "crazy" like his mother.

His mother was typically cold with her children, but especially to him, since he was the youngest and newest edition to the family. She ended up neglecting him badly enough to the point where his father had to take care of him. He took S.C. to work with him, changed all of his diapers, fed him, stayed near him when he slept, etc., in fear that his wife would do something to S.C. in frustration. The other children became jealous that S.C. had more attention from his father, and even though his father tried hard to give them the attention they all needed, he could only do so much.

When S.C. was a toddler, he was playing outside and ended up running into the road as a car was speeding by. His father jumped into the road and blocked the impact, but ended up being taken to the hospital and dying from sustained injuries. S.C. had minimal injuries.
This only served to demonize him more, and he received much harsher treatment from his mother and siblings. They all consistently accused him of killing their father/husband, while some of his siblings would physically hurt him and tell him he deserved it, especially his oldest brother. S.C. did his best to live with these conditions-- going out afterschool and not returning until late at night when they would be asleep. He ate leftovers in the fridge or even sometimes begged for money on the street to afford food, as long as he could avoid his family.

S.C. graduated high school and continued to live with his family since he was unable to afford a place of his own, working part-time at a diner to try to save for an apartment. But this plan halted when his oldest brother waited for him to get home one night and jumped him. He managed to fight back and run away, not turning back. He disappeared, and ghosted his job. He was terminated from his job eventually and his family didn't bother looking for him.

He ended up homeless and his life started to spiral. In an effort to make money, he'd taken up gambling and consistently lost it all. He begged for money on the street and slept at bus stops. The money he would win he'd use on cocaine. He hung out with other homeless individuals and did drugs with them.
At some point he ended up getting a homeless woman pregnant and she had the baby. This was a wakeup call for him, and he decided to try to sober up and take responsibility for the child, who he named Kai Yamamoto. The woman didn't want to partake in the child's life.

He tried to care for the child on the street as he couldn't afford hospital bills. But Kai's health deteriorated from his mother's consistent drug use during pregnancy, and b
ounty hunters that targeted supernatural or strange individuals eventually targeted S.C. and Kai, causing S.C. to panic and flee to a shelter.

There he met a man nicknamed Doll, who took on S.C.'s case in interest. He got both Kai and S.C. the medical help they needed, as well as asked S.C. about his life and how he ended up at this point. They talked for days, and eventually they both negotiated and decided to create and fund an organization to aid supernatural or odd individuals/anomalies and provide them safe haven. S.C. came from a place of emotion, putting all of his circumstances and experience into making this facility as accommodating as he could, while Doll handled the technical side of it.

With their combined efforts, the Anomalous Preservation Organization (APO) was created. S.C. cleaned up, became truly sober, and went back to school to become a doctor. Their organization was eventually government funded as laws on hunting anomalies started to become more strict. It has become his life work now.

S.C. and Doll eventually got married and run the APO together. They are occasionally intimate with a man named Felix, who was a patient that become a doctor at their establishment, but their relationship is almost business-like.

ABOUT THE APO

The majority of their staff are anomalies who have received help from the APO and know how the facilities work.
They aim to give food, shelter, physical/mental medical help, etc., to anomalies for very little to no price, in exchange for mild, ethical research in order to further understand anomalies and how to better help them.
It is very rare that anomalies are restrained in the APO, but on the off-chance that there are: anomalies of this kind are put through strict rehabilitation and are handled with extra care in order to not hurt or cause further damage to them.
The goal of the APO is to rehabilitate anomalies and integrate them back into everyday life if possible. Those who cannot be reintegrated will be permanently and comfortably cared for at the facilities. The APO also works to create and enforce stricter laws on the mistreatment of non-human entities.

WHAT "S.C." STANDS FOR

This is particularly silly, but as a kid he wanted to become a super hero and so he called himself "Super Cat," which his father humored. His father shortened it to "S.C." to make it easier to say. After he passed S.C. kept the acronym as his name. His actual name is Yume Yamamoto, but he does not like to be called that unless the person is important enough to him.

S.C.'S ABILITIES

S.C. used to only be able to see the dead, or souls that wandered in and out of dimensions and existence. However, a particularly terrible mission at his job rendered him injured and in a vegetative state. Something came to him in a dream-state-- the dying, physical force of "Negentropy," and offered him a chance to continue his work in exchange for his being as a test subject. S.C. agreed, and made a slow but miraculous recovery. But now his body and soul is barely his; his power and abilities are random and unpredictable, even to him, and are at the mercy of Negentropy's whims. This, on top of being the main founder of the APO, makes him a particularly high target by bounty hunters, human activists, or other rivaling experimental companies.
