"Breaking Wave". -- About

Though he clearly and irrevocably resembles a human on the outside, Lothaire is not at all what he seems at first glance. He is one of many to have known life both below the sea and on the land - a child of the merfolk, who swapped his tail, his gills and his place as a member of his community for human legs and the chance to live in the city and help keep the peace. Lothaire may as well be the perfect picture of a Fontainite police officer; keen to abide by the rules and to maintain order and civility among the people of the capital city, the Court of Fontaine, he treats every aspect of his work with equal enthusiasm and a sense of pride. He's clear-spoken, quick to respond in dangerous or urgent situations and an efficient problem-solver who has worked hard to reach the point he has across his career as a member of Fontaine's Maison Gardiennage. Having had a strong sense of justice even as far back as his childhood among the merfolk, Lothaire holds a real and earnest love for his work; he truly believes that he is doing the right thing and keeping everyone safe through his enforcement of the law, and often works long and grueling hours without complaint. He does, however, have a tendency to abandon his post if an incident he thinks needs his attention more urgently comes up, always acting on what he believes is the right thing to do first.

As a self-proclaimed protector of the people, a representative of the law and a pure Fontainite through and through, Lothaire can often be very uptight and even obsessive about abiding by the rules in play to the point of becoming snotty or even quite threatening. He tends to be cautious and antsy at the mere idea of challenging them even himself, and will find ways to achieve his goals while acting within the guidelines no matter how hard or time-consuming that may be. However, it's no surprise he can often become a little obsessive in his support of the Hydro Archon, her Court, her authority and her laws, and should he catch himself toeing the line of what is acceptable, he tends to grow flustered or panicky. Lothaire is a bad liar and can easily be caught out and his true feelings deduced; he tries to use his honesty to his advantage, though his intent isn't often received well.

Though many might give him a wide berth or treat him with caution due to his rank and due to his zealous enabling of Furina's rule, Lothaire is almost a completely different person beneath it; adventurous at heart and charmingly friendly ( if not a little ditzy sometimes ), he expresses deep and profoundly warm kindness towards any he feels are deserving. He's rather the paternal sort, often taking new recruits under his wing or offering any kind of doting support to those he considers friends and expressing enormous concern over others when they're not around. Since leaving his home, Lothaire acknowledges his own loneliness and sense of othering as a merman living among humans and doesn't take very kindly to people treating him poorly, not shying away from an argument to defend himself or call out another's poor treatment of him. He has a good-natured, naïve wish for everyone to be safe and happy, and though it isn't his personal obligation to make that so, he tries his best to please everyone and abide by their needs and wishes regardless of the strain it could put him under.

However, there is always trouble in paradise. Even though he devotes his life to following the rules laid out by his Archon, he harbours a growing discomfort with how the nation is being treated by its own god. Though he enforces the belief that the Hydro Archon is the most absolute and most correct authority in all of Fontaine, it would take an idiot not to see the strain that the nation is under - senseless laws, hypervigilant and militant police, courts that are designed to entertain with scapegoat defendants pinned with crimes they didn't do - and though Lothaire is a cog in the machine that keeps this cruel cycle going, he is finally realising that his sense of justice and that of his Archon are not the same. However, Lothaire is afraid to question the regime he is acting in support of for fear of himself or his community suffering under Furina's laws, so he keeps his head down and continues with his diligent work even if he is beginning to have trouble justifying much of it anymore.

Appearance

Lothaire is 5'10" ( 179 cm ) in height and has a lean, athletic build thanks to his active lifestyle and dedication to his training regimen. His warm brown skin is littered with dark freckles; across his nose and cheeks and, under his clothes, one can see a massive amount of these freckles speckled like galaxies on the front and sides of his chest, hips and thighs - these marks are all that remain of the bioluminescent freckles he once had before he gave up his tail. There are also two sets of large, somewhat swollen scars along the sides of his chest, where his gills used to be. Lothaire has rather sad-looking eyes with thick eyelashes and amethyst-purple irises, a strong brow and a prominent, high-bridged nose with a visible lump in it from a previous breakage. His lips are naturally pouty and turn at the corners into a coy frown. Lothaire has a beauty mark under his right eye and a huge scar over his left eye, running from just above the brow to the cheekbone. The eyelid itself is long stitched shut, since his eye is entirely missing. To cover it, Lothaire wears his Pneuma-aligned Hydro Vision affixed to an eyepatch and decorated with beading in hues of blue that was done by another member of his community of merfolk. He has dark violet hair that's very voluminous and curly, most often taming it by clipping it back using a gold beaded seashell hairclip so it falls just below his shoulders.

Lothaire's uniform consists of several pieces; a white blouse and a white cravat with gold trim, underneath a striking artisanal corset with seashell details on the chest and pearl beading. The corset and blouse form a chest window, and the sleeves of his blouse tuck into tight brown leather gloves decorated with blue fin-like frills. He wears tight white trousers with shell-shaped hip windows that reveal his freckled skin, tucked into knee-high brown leather boots. Over the top of his footwear he wears knee-high white gaiters with gold buttons down the sides. Atop his ensemble, a dark purple mantle consisting of a military-esque cape reaching his elbows and a tailcoat in the back designed to resemble a fish tail. The mantle is trimmed with lilac and gold, showing various gilded seafoam patterns, and he wears lilac sashes around the collar and crossed over his chest. Beneath his attire, Lothaire has a dark blue tattoo of flowers and water on his stomach, surrounding his navel.

Additional

Lothaire is originally from a community of merfolk living in an inland sea within Fontaine's borders. Rather than worshipping the Hydro Archon, they worship the Lochfolk known as Hesione who shares their waters to hide from the Hydro Archon's authority. In return for their taking care of and protecting her, she keeps their waters pure and clean of industrial pollution.

Lothaire has a Hydro Vision, which he earned for his stalwart desire to protect his family, friends and community from harm after failing to save his sister. As he lost his eye in the same incident, he believes Her Honour granted him this Vision in recompense for his sacrifice; thus, he wears it over where his eye used to be to represent that sacrifice. His Vision is the key reason he follows the Hydro Archon with such devotion, believing himself to be chosen by her.

He is a claymore user. Though trained in a variety of weapons during his time as a member of the National Guard of Fontaine, he favours the use of a greatsword for its pure physical power and for the fact it's intimidating to the average criminal.

Lothaire's constellation is Calamochnus, the Seafoam Wave. It represents the crossing of his two worlds - the sea from which he came and the mythology of his people, lapping onto the shores of the landwalkers whom he now lives amongst. It also represents finality.

As a former member of a seadwelling community, Lothaire hasn't quite shaken many of his habits. He still loves to fish, though he has to do so with a fishing rod now rather than his own claws, and tries to make human analogues of dishes from his home.

Lothaire visits his home once or twice a year, typically for annual festivals. He loves to catch up with his friends and family and bring them news from the shore, hoping to see how everyone has grown and changed in their time apart.
