sorcerer
wild magic

Sorcerers carry a magical birthright conferred upon them by an exotic bloodline, some otherworldly influence, or exposure to unknown cosmic forces. One can’t study sorcery as one learns a language, any more than one can learn to live a legendary life. No one chooses sorcery; the power chooses the sorcerer. For wild magic sorcerers in particular, their innate magic is said to come from the wild forces of chaos that underlie the order of creation. It both varies and is widely unknown where the power stems from, whether it be a fluke of their birth, with no apparent cause or reason, or due to extreme exposure to some form of raw magic. However it came to be, this chaotic magic churns within them, waiting for any outlet.

Syl's case is relative to his birth, with wild magic sprouting from him since he was a very young child, to his parent's complete confusion. Very little else is known on his particular case, though it is apparent the magic within him is either driven by or influences extreme flairs of emotion, causing bouts of chaos to be released alongside strong feelings.

history

childhood

Life started slow. Syl was born as the second child and sixth generation of the Beiven clan on 38 Badger’s Paw (early winter), 838, in an open snow-and-flower-ridden plainsland called the Dreaming Fields. He is son to his mother and Cleric of Desna, Ularie Beiven, and his father, Neiros Tranorin, an alchemist. His older sister, Zin, is four at the time. The Fields they call home are dashed with the rare Dreamer’s Bloom, a hallucinogenic sleep aid flower potent enough to lull most near the flower into a deep sleep, also revered as representative of Desna by her followers. The flower’s effects and the freezing climate surrounding is a dangerous and potentially deadly mixture. The abundance of Dreamer’s Bloom gives the fields an overwhelming tranquility.
His family are the only people to inhabit the Fields besides the odd hermitic tribe, as most avoid the harsh winter and dangerous flora it carries. Syl’s mother, Ularie, was behested as Desna’s cleric to start her family here in the Dreaming Fields to help those travelers unfortunate enough to fall under the Bloom’s spell in the snowy expanse. The Beivens scout for, house, and care for any who need it while they pass through the Dreaming Fields.
The Beivens lived simply and day-to-day. His dad was jovial, always liking to make people laugh. His mother was sweetly strange and never said more than what was needed. Zin was prone to an attitude and her hands to mischief. Daydreams filled the spaces between the rare stress or danger, and any fear they faced in the day always died come sunset.

Chaos began to brew in the Fields as Syl’s affliction came to light. At five years old his mother took him on a pilgrimage to Desna’s sequestered holy gardens in an attempt to pray and heal his wild magic, to no avail. From then on, the question loomed over all Syl did of whether he could be trusted.
Over time it became too much, finally culminating on a particularly stormy night. Sharp wind battered against the window pains and snow obscured any paths and vision outside as the Beivens tried to sleep through a tumultuous blizzard. Syl, now 10 years old, has little luck, his anxiety already heightened by the storm. He hears… something… outside. A creature? A sound that couldn’t be placed but carried unquestionable horror and unrealism, paired with an equally incoherent and terrifying visage flashing through the window.
Syl attempted to cast Message to his mother across the room to warn her, but the pure fear and adrenaline coursing through him activated his wild magic and sent fire coursing through the home instead. The Beiven cottage was blown apart within seconds and Syl himself sent flying into the rampaging blizzard outside. The boy was vulnerable to the storm in the dead of night and the creature he had seen just seconds prior, hot light radiating onto his face from the roaring fire of his birth home– searing flame that came from his own hand. He didn’t know what else to do, nor did he want to do anything else, but run.

city life

After traveling aimlessly without any sense of purpose or direction, 10-year-old Syl eventually found his way to the closest large city on the opposite side of the vast mountain range separating the continent: Waterdeep. The devastation of the disaster and the shame that he had caused it kept him far from his once-was-home, instead opting to stay in Waterdeep– where else would he go? The Beivens have a large extended family but he wouldn’t dare to show himself to them either and reveal that their family is shattered. He had grown to fear himself.
Anyone who is the least bit familiar with Waterdeep would know it’s no place for a lone boy. Gangs run rampant in the city built on dark murky water but Syl had little choice, making the dirty streets his home as well for a brief time and subsisting mainly on the generosity of an elderly baker and her leftover goods. The Pantheonic Ensemble, a large religious organization with stations in every major city in Tyrael, eventually noticed the sheep boy and took him in as an acolyte, as is what happens to many unfortunate youths in the city.
From there on out, Syl’s life had gained some sort of dependant normalcy. He had somewhere to sleep and was thankful, but his life and mental stability had been rocked too much to ever return to normal. Metropolitan “modern” religion functioned very differently from how he prayed before, and the culture shock of the city in general shook him thoroughly. The wild magic that coursed through him grew stronger with his anxiety and the fear that at any moment he could lose control, again hurting those near him, and a deep depression lingered. The Ensemble is well equipped with helpers and healers of any type: Syl’s own mentor, Torvold, a cleric invested in magic and knowledge, attempted to teach Syl how to get a hold of his magic all the while trying to learn more about the condition. Any tips or tricks to cure or curb the ailment were to no avail.

Syl had grown to love the Pantheon in time, inspired by their generosity, faith, and security, calling it his new home. Word spread around the city of a grand expedition to a new continent (they called the New World) waiting to be explored, and they needed an expansive crew. Torvold told Syl, now 18, to join the expedition, as the trip needed Pantheonic representatives. Syl begrudgingly agreed to go. This would be one of the most horrific and disastrous expeditions in history.
Nearly upon first docking, the first crew to be sent out (which Syl happened to be a part of) was attacked by a dragon. A devastating amount of the crew perished and the rest escaped by the skin of their teeth. The expedition was called off soon afterwards.
… But it wasn’t all bad! Syl met some of the most awesome people in the world on that very harrowing expedition, his soon-to-be party members and loved ones: Adnarim Greymane, unconventional heiress to the Greymane guild, and Ridal Mepis, lovable gnome with a penchant for jokes, rhymes, giggles, and soul cooking. The three split ways again once they returned to Waterdeep after the expedition.

waterdeep: dragon heist

The Gang meets up again two years later (Syl is 21 years old now) after the organizer of the past expedition, Regis, sets up a reunion for those who made the voyage (and survived). A c-list author by the name of Volothamp Geddarn hires the three young and novice adventurers to find his friend who was kidnapped, thus beginning a long slew of problems in Waterdeep’s underbelly that Syl and his friends are dragged into in the name of Adventure! Rival warring gangs, a mythical Stone of Galoor said to hold knowledge of everything, a hoard of riches guarded by a dragon… Suddenly these kids are tasked with unraveling deep-seated corruption and saving the city.
Volothamp gives the three a home to call their own in thanks for saving his friend (which is now called Dragonheart Manor). They live there together and do bestie things. Their neighbors on the street become quick friends and one eventually joins their party: Dalliance Fellbranch, a sexy sexy tiefling woodworker man.
Along the way, Syl is chosen by the Platinum Dragon himself, Bahamut, as his champion for his faith and goodness of heart at a Very Important ceremony at the Pantheonic Ensemble. Syl was still a sorcerer, but Bahamut’s strength was able to influence Syl’s magic, making it easier for him to control and altering it a bit with a special Bahamut-paladin flavor (subclass was Paladin of Bahamut). He also got sick full plate armor that he could wear, isn’t that crazy for a sorcerer!!!!

Syl, Ridal, and Adnarim’s group is titled ‘the Dragonhearts’ through their adventure, each of them having binds to a dragon (Syl’s connection to Bahamut, Ridal’s Dragonborn boyfriend Rishaal, Adnarim’s embedded dragon gem-necklace-weapon). The Dragonhearts successfully fought and won against Manshoon, the leader of the Zhentarim, and squashed the gang issues in Waterdeep upon completion of their adventure.

The crew finally can rest a little, yay! Underneath Dragonheart Manor is a tavern that the Dragonhearts fixed up and re-opened afterward, to awesome success! The three of them each devote time there when they’re around. With not many more pressing city threats to take care of, Syl devotes a good bit of this time to the Pantheon, taking a more active role in helping the churchgoers and running some daily functions.

The group’s rest time is over; wasn’t that lovely? They got about a year off. It is important to know that the world of Alos has several main dragon gods, each to their own level of present-day relevancy. One who was thought to be mostly gone or inactive, Yuul, the dragon-god of time, had decided to make an appearance again at the Pantheon a couple days off from Pillars Fest (fantasy Christmas-adjacent) to tell everyone the city was Never Supposed to Be There and that it and its inhabitants will disappear soon! Awesome!
Yuul manages the timelines of this world and others, and it seems Waterdeep was from outside of this timeline and world. In such events, it is his job to correct it by dissecting it from this timeline like an ingrown lifeforce– it, and the people from it, were never meant to be here. When the city is removed, so will be the memories of anything pertaining to Waterdeep and its people who leave with it.
This declaration was obviously met with confusion and fear. The next few days for the city was focused on spending time with loved ones and tying up loose ends, because no one knows who will stay and who will poof. The Dragonhearts do what they can, dread permeating their sphere as well; Ridal and Rishaal get engaged and the Dragonhearts live the last few days in Waterdeep together and meeting with family.
As the group spends the last few moments together at the sky docks: a roar interrupts the stillness as a flash of black races towards the city followed by blue flecks of energy, impossibly fast.

Sometimes, the most horrific thing isn’t forgetting, but remembering.

Pillarsfest has come to a close and in that moment, so has Waterdeep. Those who remain have difficulty grasping any tangible thought of the city that was. Syl struggles to gather some sort of semblance on the situation, on the city, on himself… He knows how he got here, but nothing specific. Something about rogue gang members…? He’s forgotten so much… Something was here, but all they know is that they have to rebuild.
A monstrous crack in the sky filled with static fuzz interrupts his thoughts. Something… incomprehensible comes through. “ANACHRONIDS!” shouts Yuul as this horror claws him from above. The static in the crack in the sky matches the feeling in Syl’s fingers. He flashbacks to himself as a child years ago in his family’s cottage– a memory he hadn’t had access to before. The panic attack, looking out of the window, he sees his own shadow of static and limbs; it opens its mouth and fire bellows out. Coming back to reality, this Self of flat static of Syl manifests behind him and the Dragonhearts atop this sky port, along with several other “anachronid” horrors. They gear up for battle with time god Yuul wrestling in the sky behind them.

present day

The battle at the sky ports was a success, but more questions than answers remain as the group has a feeling this is only the beginning. Now with Waterdeep and half of its residents gone, the city needed new leadership, and also a new name. The Dragonhearts stepped up and were chosen to found and lead this new city, aptly named ‘Dragonheart’.
The four members had a lot to do. They each attended to establishing the city again and then attended to their personal matters and goals. Year 858, around 26 years old, Syl decided to take a pilgrimage to Desna’s garden like his mother did with him years ago to atone for the harm he’s done to his family, seeking closure. He lead the journey to the Garden with a group of other interested parties, losing some along the way either from lack of interest or faith or loss of life. The gardens were as beautiful as described to Syl as shown by glimpses from his dreams and as his (barely) remembered memories of youth. One thing was jarringly out of place: there lurked a beast of shadow and nightmare, seemingly similar to the anachronids but not entirely. Syl saw everything he feared within that beast.
Once the beast was slain, Syl prayed. His Dream Mother told him not even she has insight and understanding of what he saw that night or what is happening with the anachronids, but she does know that his family is alive and functioning as best they can with a lost son. So, he went to them. And they reunite. And they cry. And they thank Desna.
His mother has burn scars on half of her body; a painful reminder. Some other force had intentionally separated the family and been keeping them as such in the meantime, intercepting all letters and messages attempted to be sent at any time. Even more questions and confusion followed. The Beivens share that more and more often travelers have been coming to the shop with similar visions to the shadow beast, but never anything tangible like what Syl’s experienced, bringing nightmares along with them. Additionally, any connection they try to make to Desna is always clouded. They make the realization that there is a disturbance in the entire faith of Desna. Syl determines this will be his new quest, alongside researching anachronids.

Current day, Syl is 38 and has learned more about Desna’s plight: Nightmare creatures are being formed by a corruption of Desna, something latched onto her and taken an aspect of her like a parasite to her and her followers; not even Desna is aware, and when being told about it the evil being lashes out. Desna must first be cleansed by finding people afflicted, destroying their beast, and curing the nightmares accosted of them– then doors will open of how to fully cure Desna. He continues this duty of traveling from time to time to hunt nightmares in an effort to heal Desna and also aid the troubled dreamers of Alos.
Syl’s also come more into the leadership role his group’s accomplishments and the city itself have lent him, originally raddled with shame and insecurity from his past and fear of himself. With the help of an army of friends who call him an inspiration, he’s grown to believe at the very least, he can support the people of his city and care for those who need it in any way he can provide it. He recognizes he has substantial abilities, and no matter how he feels about them, he should use them to help instead of avoiding them at all out of fear. He decides it: he will be a protector, a Sanctuary.
Along his travels, he came across an abandoned dark elf boy on a sky ship. The child is mute, around four years old with pale blonde hair and pale eyes, and terribly shy. The guards were going to get rid of the child as he had no parents in sight, but Syl offered a hefty sum of gold to take the child instead. He eventually learns the baby doesn’t understand Common and does respond to Elvish, learning his name is Ill’diira May’an’vay. Syl intends to try and reunite the baby with his parents or to find him a family who could care for him as he needs, as Syl frequently works in dangerous situations…
But he is just so darn cute… (And Syl has gotten attached).

Adnarim Greymane is the sole heiress to the Greymane name, and is now head of the Greymane Guild, holding the title of Lady Greymane. Present day she is a formidable pirate ship captain-queen with violence as an interest and theft as a hobby. She is sweetly erratic and good when encouraged to be.
The New World expedition they met on was a rightful disaster and Syl’s naturally very reclusive and somber demeanor was heightened by the carnage that overcame them. Adnarim, a disliker of sad things and people, made it difficult for Syl to remain in his pity-party (similar to an extrovert adopting their introvert).

From there, a similar dynamic persisted: she dares him to be bold and live, he dares her to take a minute to breathe and practice care. They are both very not normal and though in very different ways, a strong bond quickly formed.
Romantic feelings on both sides have flared to the point of nearly boiling over, now the two remaining pleasantly basking in each other’s overwhelming support for the other and opposite ends of Eccentricity; a balance.
They enjoy Doing Activites together instead of lounging. Adnarim gifted him his flametongue longsword and trained him how to wield and effectively use it, and she was also his bodyguard for a time after the Waterdeep business was wrapped up. Occasionally they would enjoy a sewer-delve (to Adnarim’s excitable request) and similar mini-adventures. They share a vegetarian diet and frequent Hot Local Vegetarian spots around town. When they are both home in Dragonheart Manor, they are co-parents to a single froggy chair in the hallway.

Ridal is Southern comfort and charm wrapped into a single bubbly 2’11” gnome. She is a master chef and originator of the College of Flavor bard subclass based around the culinary arts, which you can study yourself at Riddleturner University, established with her husband Rishaal the Pageturner. A lover of love, stories reading, practicality, and little jokes; Her riddles are so good that they carry literal magic. Everyone loves Ridal, it’s literally so hard not to love pure sunshine!!!
The fateful expedition where our adventurers met was so, so rough for both Syl and Ridal– especially for Ridal, due to her maybe-partner being slain in the tragedy. She wasn’t the positive radiant self that we know now as a result, wrought by grief and an absence of identity… which ended up being the cause of her and Syl’s bonding. It started with a gesture of care extended by Syl, always noticing when someone is in pain. It took a minute for the trust to catch and stay as Ridal had grown up with fear and warning of dangerous giantkin embedded into her, but when it did… well then they couldn’t Stop caring for each other.

From there on and to this day their relationship is the definition of comfort. There is something so special about a small race + giant race bond. Separately the two ooze support and consideration from their natural personalities, but when together the acceptance, care, and pure love absolutely radiates.
These two enjoy a good chill and slow day. They frequent the market together on fantasy-Sunday mornings, taking their time to browse, chat with each other and the townspeople, and simply appreciate the day. Both lovers of flowers and plants, gardening is a Favorite pastime, as well as reading books in bed, napping, and generally lounging. Syl loves to help with cooking (he steals when he’s able, he can’t help it. Her food smells so good and he’s a foodie) and shares his family’s cultural recipes with her. Syl guest lectures at Ridal’s university when she requests.

How to describe Dalliance Felbranch. Well… He’s a sexy master woodworking slut (honorific) who isn’t afraid of a good time. He is also now Adnarim’s stepdad.
Dally was the Dragonheart’s neighbor when they were granted Dragonheart Manor. Through constant support, hand-lending, aiding in the Zhentarim and Manshoon fights, and just because the Dragonhearts all took a liking to him, he became the official fourth member of the Dragonhearts.

The Dragonhearts have always been able to turn to Dally for support and defense, and have helped him heal his own wounds and grow in turn. Dally was a neighbor, then close friend, then family. He’s always tried to instill strength and confidence into Syl, even moments before Waterdeep and half of the people within were set to vanish, assuring him atop the sky ports that "every day is about all of us.” To this day Syl knows he can depend on Dally for anything, no questions asked.
