Kitan is a nervous wreck, timid, and extremely sensitive. People brush him off and say that it is merely his weakness for being too empathetic for his own good. Although, one could say he has a sixth-sense for being able to tell exactly how both people and animals are feeling both physically and mentally. He is too young to understand and assumes these feelings are his own perception, which often leaves him feeling more anxious for seemingly no reason. Amongst other reasons, this makes Kitan prone to mental stress, headahces, and pain.

From a very young age, Kitan's spirit energy was much stronger than most. His spirit is no where near as strong as the weakest of guardians, but it is enough to cause him pain. He is constantly afflicted by inexplicable headaches with no awareness of his power or knowledge of how to control his energy. In addition to the manifestation of incredibly high levels of empathy, Kitan's immune system is also more robust. One branch of the Pillars of Academia in Corazón found use for his resilient immune system and began secretly testing their research on him to speed up the process. It didn't take much for the sensitive boy to agree to their plans under the impression that he would be helping many people receive better medicine. Kitan rarely gets sick, but sometimes he becomes ill enough to remain bed-ridden for weeks. On better days, he could still feel uncomfortable.

The war between Nabula and Rěnshòu swept the other empires into disarry. Caught in the wake of these two battling nations, Corazón also found its northeastern border under constant tension. Corazón's allied nation, Arcanus, sends down an army to assist in a particularly threatening border skirmish after which this same group rebelled against their own king (turned corrupt emperor) and sought refuge in Corazón. Amongst the group was their leader, Shibaan, who would soon become Kitan's beloved mentor. Shibaan brings along Aislinn and Hifira who she found on the battlefield and the three of them tear through the Pillar of Acadmeia's ranks to pin down every single soul who dared to hurt Kitan.

Kitan takes a while to recover from the sudden change in his routine, but is more than willing to learn how to control his spirit energy under Shibaan's guidance. Her mental fortitude comes in handy and Kitan's headaches and timid nature slowly subside. Several years later when the trio returns from Vita, Kitan pays tribute to Shibaan by dyeing two streaks into his hair that are the same colour as her eyes. Most people don't pay it any attention since the colours just appear to be a more saturated version of his own heterochromia, but Kitan will always just smile proudly at the memory of his mentor and her friends who saved him.

Notes:
✦ Kitan is 12 when Checkmate begins and encounters Shibaan, Aislinn, and Hifira for the first time. He tends to hide behind things and does not come into contact with many people.
✦ He is 16 when he first starts dyeing his hair. This is the same time that the trio return from their trip to Vita. He sees them off as they travel to Arcanus to finally overthrow the corrupt emperor. He is significantly less nervous and excitedly tells the trio of his studies and new friends.
✦ When Kitan is 18, he officially joins the Pillars of Academia- this time as a fully fledged researcher and supervisor of research ethics. Around this time, Kitan also hears news that the trio are already making moves in Nabula, which soon falls under their control. He is mostly in control of his power and has little problems interacting with others.
✦ Sometimes Kitan doesn't have time to retouch the fading dye so he clips two iridescent feathers of the same colour into his hair instead.
✦ No matter how much better he gets with interacting with people, he still prefers hanging out with animals. When asked why, he usually states that it is because their intentions are purer.
✦ Kitan's room was originally built to soothe his psyche and he feels the safest here. The large room is an organically shaped dome/round leaf and the windows show a view of the lush greenery of Corazón. There is a garden and forest-esque section installed with its own irrigation system. Soft sounds of water trickling like a gentle stream accompanied by the rustling of foliage as a cool breeze drifts past and small animals move about make it seem like a paradise. There is a section that is conmpletely free of any furnishings right in front of a large window wall where the floor is mirrored and reflects the intricate architecture to form a full leaf. The edge where floor meets the bottom of the window looks like the midrib of a leaf on its side.
✦ The door to his room leads to a walkway and gazebo. The gazebo connects to a set of stone steps that transition into the branches of the great tree that house the Pillar of Academia's headquarters.
