Had a normal up bringing, and a few moons after becoming a warrior got her first apprentice, Acornpaw. She taught him how to hunt very well but because she wasn't confident in her own fighting skills and didn't want the training to go wrong somehow, she held off from teaching him how to fight until later. After a few battle trading sessions the two where ordered to join a patrol that became involved in an ambush at the border with another clan. The fight was vicious but Acornpaw fought well, successfully chasing off an apprentice, but in doing so he ran into the path of a monster and Hilltail found him in a bramble bush shortly after he took his last breath

This lead Hilltail to blame herself, thinking that if she had taught him to fight sooner he wouldn't have had to run after the cat. Hilltail grieved and became more withdrawn, the leader of the clan noticed this and decided to give her another apprentice, Crowpaw. At first Hilltail rejected the idea, but the apprentice grew on her, and she eventually accepted her responsibility. But, when the two were involved in another border skirmish, Hilltail could not see or find her apprentice and became worried. She later found out that she had been sent to camp as they needed backup warriors, but still took out her anger on her, scared that something bad had happened. This caused the two cats' relationship to become fragile and Crowpaw often argued against her mentor.
