story

Rogun Safarova exudes an aura of toughness. Something about his demeanor suggests that he isn't a man to be trifled with. He is certainly an experienced agent, but newer employees tend to be wary of him. As it is with any workplace, the rumormill is quick to fill in his backstory using people's assumptions. "Look at the way he curls his fists, he's probably beat someone to death with them." "I heard he can suppress Schadenfreude with his gaze alone." "So what sector of the Backstreets do you think he comes from?"

In reality, Rogun has never committed murder. He never suppressed Schadenfreude just by looking at it, and he certainly doesn't come from the Backstreets. He is simply a Nest dweller born with an intimidating face. He's heard rumors spread about him since he was a child, but saying he's used to them by now would be a total lie. It has certainly helped him develop a thick skin, but the whispers behind his back from those who don't even know him are something he will never get used to.

Perhaps that is why he enjoys working with Der Freischütz. Sure, Repression work is about controlling an Abnormality's desires, but it's also basically therapy. Rogun always derives some conversation whenever he visits his containment unit, and recorded audio tapes have confirmed that he is not being manipulated the Abnormality. On the contrary, he is making remarkable progress trying to prevent him from living up to his name as "the freeshooter." Unlike people, Der Freischütz never judges Rogun for his appearance. It also helps that Rogun is, much to everyone's chagrin, hopelessly in love with the Abnormality.

Contrary to his appearance, he exhibits a very nice and polite nature. His attempts at trying to live up to his appearance by acting like a thug often end in failure because he's too gentle to get into the mindset of one. On top of this, he is easily susceptible to peer pressure, and in his childhood, was often coerced into doing things he didn't want to.

However, he is a Level V agent and team captain for a reason. In battle, he has nerves of steel. Even in life-or-death situations, he remains cool-headed and continues to give out decisive orders while fighting with brutal efficiency. While he's not the only agent with these traits, this is despite his lack of combat experience prior to joining L Corp. So although he doesn't have the personality of a thug, he can certainly fight better than one.

After a rough childhood full of neglect in the Backstreets of District 21, Rogun has mistaken any sort of attention or longing of him as positive interaction. The budding crew looking to make some money off harvesting mermaids and whales from the Great Lake asked Rogun if he would be interested in joining them, to which he immediately accepted the offer and boarded the S.S. Ridgeback. Once the crew realized how easy he was to manipulate, they offloaded all the work nobody wanted to do such as swabbing the deck and gutting the catches. Rogun happily did all of this and more, simply glad to earn any sort of praise and attention at all. Only one crew member by the name of Emanuel thought this was unfair and treated Rogun as a crew member rather than a servant. He became his only friend. After a few months, the two started dating.

About three years had passed since Rogun first joined the crew. Emanuel dissuaded the others from treating Rogun as their errand boy, but he was still peer-pressured into doing many tasks, though not as many as before. Rogun still did not mind, for even amidst the roiling waves, the howling winds, and the perilous battles he fought, he finally found companionship. However, one night, a whale caught the crew by surprise. Half of the people he sailed with for several years perished in an instant. The survivors abandoned their sinking ship, with Rogun and Emanuel managing to snag a rowboat all to themselves. However, it was only after the whale left, the ship dipped beneath the waves, and the calamity settled that they made a dreadful realization. Emanuel had been infected by the whale.

On their tiny rowboat together, Rogun watched Emanuel fight off the infection of the whale. He watched his lover slowly transform into something inhuman. Limbs turned to fins, skin melting into mucus-slick scales, teeth sharpening into pins. Rogun swore across his heart he would continue to love Emanuel no matter how he appeared so long as he retained his inner humanity. For the next several months, Rogun supported him, even as he felt the fibers of his own heart being peeled off layer by layer as his lover struggled against the infection. They continued hunting mermaids together for food, collecting water whenever possible, and combining their knowledge to navigate back to the shore of the Great Lake while obeying its laws. On cold nights, they'd cuddle together for warmth, regardless of how cold and wet and slimy Emanuel was becoming. Deep inside, no matter how hard he tried to bury it, Rogun realized they were fighting a losing battle, but he wanted to believe they'd make it back to land together.

Six months later, a whaling vessel found them at last. Rogun and Emmanuel hollered and flashed lights to get the vessels attention, and it started sailing over to them. They were saved! Finally, their ordeal would come to an end, they could leave the Great Lake, and they could begin to solve how to undo Emmanuel's mermaid transformation. However, as these thoughts were running through Rogun's mind, a harpoon whizzed past him and impaled Emmanuel with such force that he fell into the Lake.

That day, Rogun alone was rescued. He has tried and is still trying to move on from his first love. However, a small part of him will forever long to return to the Great Lake in hopes that Emmanuel survived somehow, and he's out there waiting for Rogun as a mermaid, waiting for him to finish the job...
