story

Taengtaeng is a perfectionist, no understatement there. If she sees so much as a single flaw in her work, then she might as well have failed the entire thing. This trait of hers is helpful for writing up the most comprehendible and detailed Abnormality reports, but it's also troublesome in that it creates a backlog of work she should have finished ages ago. Her department captain Leesihan insists that perfection isn't necessary, and that someone as intelligent as her should be capable of learning the art of "bullshitting." Taengtaeng didn't really understand what that meant until they started dating.

She is loyal to both her team and duties. Contrary to her resting bitch face, she is respectful to her fellow colleagues.

(uhh the rest of this section is a wip lmao)

(Needs updating) She grew up in District 12's Nest under the watchful guidance of her nuclear family. Her parents were the owners of one of the District's only firearms manufacturers, and so she lived a rich life even among Nestfolk. Throughout her childhood, she was taught to be stringent with her standards and to not tolerate any imperfections; those who failed and were kicked out of the Nest deserved it for being lazy, and feathers who rose to the top of their Wings did so through hard work. These were among the many lessons her parents instilled in her. Taengtaeng's need to become valedictorian, achieving perfect scores on nearly every assignment, stemmed from her desire to not disappoint them or they would no longer love her for being someone they would call "defective." She established a large network of acquaintences, a lot of talented individuals who were also high-achievers, but mostly kept to her small group of friends that she had since elementary school.

The only exception was a boy whom she used to be close friends with until he started falling behind academically and socially. Fearing for her own status, she purposefully allowed their relationship to drift apart, but maintained a friendly attitude toward him. Years later during her senior year, their science teacher assigned her to a group project with that same boy. They agreed she would do most of the work since at this point the boy was barely passing, and Taengtaeng couldn't risk her grade tanking. Nevertheless, the boy felt guilty watching his former friend shoulder most of the burden, and on the day before their project was due volunteered to take the poster board home with him to finalize its visual aesthetic. Taengtaeng complied, trusting his artistic talent.

It was raining the next morning. The boy slipped on mud and dropped their project on his way to school. With their poster ruined and barely legible, Taengtaeng received her first ever failing grade.

Any normal student would have been mad, but she was livid. Upon discovering her grade, her parents' lambasting drove her to tears. Another blunder like that, they said, and she'd wind up in the Backstreets after they kicked her out. This first ever blunder led to the devastating realization that her parents only loved her so long as she met their unrealistic expectations. Afterward, she retreated into her room and contacted her friends for comfort. They promised to help exact her vengeance on the boy.

For the next six months, Taengtaeng and her friends bullied the boy relentlessly. They destroyed his belongings, tripped him down the stairs, and spread baseless rumors that killed his reputation. He was already unpopular, but because of those rumors, nobody ever came to his defense. Some even joined in on the bullying. He would apologize many times over for destroying her project while begging her to stop his torment, but mere words weren't enough to quell her hatred. Eventually, the bullying escalated into death threats, and Taengtaeng herself told him to his face how much she wanted to see him dead.

On the last day before finals began, he jumped off the roof of the school building and split his head on the concrete pavement.

Reality crashed down on her when she saw his mangled corpse. His suicide was the direct consequence of her actions. She killed this boy, and for what? So that her parents would still love her? She already knew they only cared about her as a trophy they could show off, the flawless achievement they nurtured, and not her as a person. No, he died for making her realize that truth in the first place—a truth she refused to acknowledge. Nobody was ever held accountable for the boy's death, but she knew exactly who was responsible for this tragedy.

Finals week passed. Taengtaeng graduated valedictorian of her class. Her friends cheered for her, and her parents expressed how proud they were by throwing her a graduation party.

She had never felt more hollow in her life.

Even after she completed her degree in data science, that guilt continued to follow her. She applied to join her Nest's Wing—the letter offering her a job at Lobotomy Corp. arrived only a week later. She knew that certain risks came with joining a Wing, particularly ones that resulted in the loss of life. It was why she planned on working elsewhere prior to the incident, but after that happened, she no longer cared. Her misery despite getting what she wanted may as well serve as her atonment. If anything, her dying might even the score.
