THE BEGINNING

Many years ago, in the mountains of Kyoto where a small kitsune village resided, a priestess named Michiko prayed to the gods for a child, unable to conceive. Many years ago, where the celestial beings reside, the gods learned of the conception of a demigod through Inari. Whether it was a mistake or intentional was beside the point - the issue at hand was whether or not the child would be able to handle the ways of the heavens, or if his fate would succumb to more worldly views. Despite Inari's wishes, the other kami decided an initiation of sorts was in order, and conveniently enough, there was a tether to bring this plan to fruition. Michiko, unaware of what exactly the heavens had given her, was only happy to finally be a mother. Inari, whose child was being taken away by their brethren, was forced to conspire with a more sinister being in order to protect their son. If the plan failed, Shareta would not only never know his true nature and heritage - he would lose his life. And so it began.

EXISTING

As the head priestess of her village, Michiko was devout in her beliefs and teachings - this was not just a role, it was a priority. So when Shareta was born and her abilities allowed her to see that he housed a large amount of dormant negative energy, being a mother became second. In order to avoid any aversive stimuli that may awaken Shareta's yako side, she kept him isolated to a single room where he would remain for the next 20 years with only the occasional maid to care for him. Michiko became crueler and more negligent over time, turning a blind eye to the servants who took advantage of her son, angry at the gods for giving her a cursed child. Seeing as the energy housed within her son would be too powerful for her to manage when it woke, she summoned the 9-tailed fox Ijimeru, a yokai of legend who would have the ability to overpower the yako and cull him when the time came. Unbeknownst to her, Ijimeru was the one conspiring with Inari to keep a watch on her son, but had to appear ignorant in order to play the cards right. Despite everything Michiko had done to prevent the change, it only led to resentment from Shareta, and as it grew the more his energy slipped. As a last desperate attempt to keep it under wraps a little longer, Ijimeru convinced the priestess to let him take the fennec out of the village. In the end though, as Shareta learned the joys of life and what exactly he was kept away from, he became angrier and eventually found his way back to Michiko as a yako, originally intent on killing her but unable to once he saw her - he took his own life instead.

LIVING

The death of his mortality led to the revival of his divinity. In doing so, he learned of the plan - that he was not to keep his yako dormant, but to learn to embrace and control it. The experience of negative, volatile emotion would give him the ability to walk between the worlds and deeply empathize with anybody he met, no matter their path in life - something the kami could not experience as they did not understand worldly views. Shareta had been molded into the perfect messenger, and was finally able to know and stand beside his true parent, who doted on him enough to make up for any absence and neglect the fox had previously felt. And, of course, Ijimeru was still in the picture - it was only right for him to remain by his soulmate's side, wasn't it? As for Michiko, well.. nobody really knows what happened to her.
