When xe met Mint, xe knew that she possessed some form of potential, and felt a sense of responsibility for the small hybrid. Xe're willing to give whatever it takes just to protect the life of the world, and to stop Mint being thrown headfirst into danger with no control over the power she has the potential to control. Even though xe know it's inevitable that Mint will have to one day fight, it won't stop xem from delaying it for as long as possible.
