Leoch is the only one who knows their real name; he can speak their language and hear their sorrows. They're often misunderstood, seen as a frightening beast taking the blame for how treacherous the path is by those wishing to pass through. Long ago, they lived in a community of other sphinxes, but now, as far as they know, they're the last of their kind.

Without the equipped golden spike piece, the only gold pieces on them are the horn and tail tip. The tip of the tail unlocks the gate to the Devil's Doorway, which is the entrance to Tartarus and can only be accessed after going down a long tunnel into a mountain that also includes the River Phlegethon. Long ago, The Guardian was imprisoned here after having their white, feathered wings severed. The journey to the Doorway is exhausting, especially for those without a faster method of transportation and/or heat resistance - winged devils are the most fortunate.

They're long lost soul mates with the creature living at the bottom of the lake in Elysium, sharing a deep love spanning many human eternities.
