Profile

Dionysus was the ancient Greek god of wine, winemaking, grape cultivation, fertility, ritual madness, theater, and religious ecstasy. His Roman name was Bacchus.

> Dionysus was fathered by Zeus upon the mortal woman Semele. Whilst still in the womb, Hera manipulated his mother into asking his father to reveal his true divine form, which vaporized her instantly. Zeus acted quickly to save the child, sewing him into his own thigh, where young Dionysus continued to grow, soaking up his father’s godly energies. Upon his birth, Zeus gave his care to a group of nymphs and satyrs near Mt Nysa. Due to the nature of those who raised him, he developed a rather wild nature. However, Dionysus was quite charming and lovable, and drew the adoration of his caregivers and his mortal friends from nearby villages with his magical tricks. Eventually, after several centuries travelling, Dionysus invented wine, the glories of which he vowed to spread across all the world. During his travels, Dionysus gained a massive cult following, with many of his worshippers allowing themselves to be transformed into debaucherous satyrs and maenads as a sign of their devotion.
