The Venatavis are a hybrid bird/dragon species, similar to griffins, from the Painted World of Altoria. They are also found in the worlds of Euphoria, the Land of Dreams, and Quirani.

They are a very natural-based species, having no magic, having venomous wing talons, and being able to breathe fireballs or fire using special throat sacs that produce a flammable powder. They can stand on either their back legs, or they may walk on all fours. Venatavis come in a wide variety of colors, the rarest being sunset colors with purple eyes.

APPEARANCE

GENERAL ANATOMY

Venatavis have two hind legs, two smaller forelegs that can often be used as arms, a pair of large wings to soar through the sky, and a long bird beak. They have four digits on their hind feet, 3 in the front and 1 in the back, and 4 digits on their forelegs, 1 of which is a thumb-like claw. Males and females each have very distinct differences between them, males generally having much more vibrant and exquisite markings, patterns, and colors, having large crests of feathers on their heads, and a long train of tail feathers, similar to a peacock's, while females generally have more solid colors, more tassel feathers, and a long, scaly tail. There is not too much of a difference in size between males and females. All Venatavis have black sclera in their eyes, and they generally have bright and colorful irises. Female Venatavis are called, hens, males are roosters. Baby females are chicks, and young males are cockerels. A family is a flock.

Each Venatavis has a pair of organ sacs in their throat that produce a fine explosive powder, which can be ignited by a pair of hidden "teeth" in the far back roof of their mouth. The teeth click and rub together to ignite the powder, which creates a fireball. To effectively shoot the fireball out from their mouths, they sneeze through their mouths, which sends the powder flying out of their beaks while it is ignited. Venatavis also have venom in their wing talons that they can secrete at will, the effects of this venom vary according to the subspecies. A rare birth defect is present in some Venatavis, that prevents them from ever using either their fire breath, or carrying venom in their talons, or both.

AGING

They spend the first 30 years of their life as chicks, then begin molting and gaining their flight feathers, until at around 55 they leave the nest as young adults. 55 to 100 then is their young adult stage, 100 to 200 is their prime, 200 to 300 would be their equivalent of being middle-aged, then 300 to 450~500 would be the elderly stage of their life.

GENERAL

Desert Venatavis are also commonly found throughout Euphoria, though not quite as commonly as the jungle variety. They are found predominantly in the Simmerlands, but some hang around the edge of the Freedom Plains. They have also been known to travel. They generally have golden, red, and orange colors, though there are always exceptions.

Their claws are much more curved, designed for grasping onto things and keeping a firm grip on it. Desert Venatavis also have a third, smaller side claw by their main wing talons. Even their beaks tend to have a sharper and bigger curve than their Jungle relatives.

Desert_Claws.jpg

Desert Venatavis also tend to have darker colored spots under or around their eyes, this helps reduce the glare in their eyes from the sun.

Desert_Spots.jpg

ABILITIES

Desert Venatavis have weak firebreath and strong hemotoxin in their wing claws, which causes intense swelling and blood clotting, as well as eventual necrosis, which can kill a human in minutes. However, with their firebreath being weaker, they don't breathe fireballs, instead breathing out more of a dusty flurry of burning embers

GENERAL

Jungle Venatavis are the most common type of Venatavis seen in Euphoria. They primarily dominate Skyfall Isle, but have been known to travel. They normally have very bright and vibrant blues, greens, and purples, though there are always exceptions.

Jungle Venatavis have longer, straighter claws than that of their desert dwelling cousins, useful for being strong and precise.

ABILITIES

They have average firebreath and mild neurotoxin in their wing claws that could cause muscle paralysis and kill a human in 20 minutes.

GENERAL

The Albino Venatavis are the rarest of the species in Euphoria and the worlds connected to the Land of Dreams, and are borderline near extinct. They tend to live in cold, damp, secluded places, away from others. They can be found primarily on the continents of Shiverglow and Shinechill on the planet of Euphoria, but sometimes can be found on the other continents.

A major part in what makes Albinos so rare is more than just them being hunted, it's how they're born. As I've said before, Venatavis are a hybrid species of a bird and dragon, and this genetic makeup is what separates Albinos from other normal Venatavis. There are 2 ways an Albino Venatavis can come to be, and that's either through a genetic mutation that causes the Venatavis chick's DNA to lean more towards the dragon side, or the Venatavis can be the half-blood offspring of a normal Venatavis and a dragon.

FadingGlory's Ivory here is an example of the former, both of his parents were your typical Venatavis, but their child hatched out of his egg with the rare mutation of being Albino. Albinos born this way don't normally have too drastic features when compared to others of the species, again, using Ivory as an example, he has horns instead of a crest, a somewhat twisted beak with a more menacing appearance, and extra bones and leathery webbing in his wings.

ShadowPikaboo's Venatavis, Ruby, is an example of the latter, being a half-blood cross between a normal Venatavis and a Bellezza. As you can clearly see, she is vastly different from normal Venatavis, and shows a lot of features of her Bellezza inheritance. The appearances of half-blood Albinos vary wildly from one individual to the next, as well as their abilities, as it's all dependant on what kind of dragon they are a half-blood of. A cross between a wyvern and a Venatavis could result in a chick with huge wings and tiny forearms, if any at all, a cross between a venomous dragon and a Venatavis could result in an Albino who does have stronger venom in his or her wing talons, or even a different type of venom entirely.

One thing that is consistent with all Albinos, however, is that no matter how magical the dragon parent may be, the offspring will not inherit their parent's magic, if the chick inherits anything at all, it will be magic so weak it'll be hardly noticeable or useable, and the Albino likely won't even know he/she has any magic in the first place, much less how to use it.

ABILITIES

They have weak Cytotoxic venom in their wing talons, generally are born with the defect that prevents them from having any venom more often than others, and have stronger fire breath, being able to breathe both fireballs and a stream of fire, like you normally see in dragons. Unique to the Albinos is the fact that they also produce their explosive powder in their wings, which shimmers and sparkles like snow, and explodes when exposed to fire or intense heat. Albinos can flap their wings to send this white powder flying in whichever direction they choose, where it will then stick to whatever it touches until it is detonated by the Venatavis' main fire breath. The Albinos themselves don't explode as easily due to a special oil they coat themselves in when they preen, which fireproofs their feathers. It's not perfect, however, enough exposure to fire or extreme temperatures will cause an Albino's wings to burst into violent flames, but again, it is much harder to accomplish this with an Albino.

They also mark their territory and the area around it with this silvery white powder, leaving a beautiful warning to intruders, while also serving as a trap for any who dare to invade the Albino's lair.

LEARN MORE...

Venatavis have their own language known as Birdsong. As the name implies, it sounds to anyone else like the song a bird would sing, and is a difficult language to learn for any non-bird species (though it's not impossible). Even for me, it's rather difficult to imagine, but try to imagine a bird's chirping and singing as if it were words and sentences. Venatavis also have accents as well, I imagine the jungle Venatavis to sound more similar to forest or jungle birds (like the musician wren and the common blackbird), the desert Venatavis to sound more like hawks, buzzards, and kites, while the Albino Venatavis have more of the weirder, unusual sounds, from anything like owls, to the Capuchinbird, the Great Potoo, the channel-billed cuckoo, or the southern cassowary. One thing I do imagine the Albinos doing a lot of, though, is cooing like a dove, despite how else they might sound.

That's just in general, though, Venatavis as a whole have a huge vocal range and can mimic all sorts of sounds--if a lyrebird in real life can mimic chainsaw noises, Venatavis most definitely can, too!

One other thing that is common among Venatavis, particularly jungle Venatavis, is a paint they make using plants unique to Euphoria. This paint serves as makeup that can be applied to the feathers to either bring out natural highlights, or cover up imperfections on Venatavis who feel insecure about their colors. Male Venatavis are the ones who use this makeup far more than the females, as their beauty is their pride, and a more beautiful appearance will appeal more to the ladies. It's also common for males to compete with each other for a girl, but not through violence--they put on a show for her, each performing a dance unique to the individual and singing, as well as trying to find some way to outsmart the other. Some large villages of Venatavis even have the men get together to compete against each other for sport like this. For a male to try and dull his colors with paint/makeup would be a disgrace, but moderate humiliation might be a small price to pay if the guy in question catches the eyes of too many ladies...

This section contains outdated and old information that needs to be overhauled.

During the time of the Kings' War against Soledormir, Gorgeon was King of the Venatavis on Skyfall Isle. While he was remarkably normal in every way power-wise, he was widely known as being the most beautiful Venatavis to ever have lived, and one of the most clever and witty ones as well. Gorgeon has always had a playful personality, and could even be considered quite the prankster; when he was among the Kings, he was close friends with Arthur; the two of them would often cause mischief, tell jokes, prank each other, etc...

One time, Gorgeon thought it would be funny to set up a date between his good buddy Arty and a griffin shapeshifter he knew... While he had done it as a joke, Arthur and Sophie ended up getting married, and Gorgeon was happy for both of them. During his time as King, the Venatavis were exceptionally talented woodcarvers, and it showed, as they built grand towers and cities out of delicately crafted wood. In the most extravagant of towers they built, the walls would be engraved with precise carvings and embedded with jewels or gold. In their homeworld, they have many different and unusual plants with many unique properties, several of these having special oils that they used to preserve, waterproof, and fireproof what they built, more so than what's found on Earth. They also used special oils to refine wooden weapons, making them as hard and durable as steel. For example, Gorgeon uses wooden hunting boomerangs as his primary weapons, being hit by one of them would be like getting hit by a solid slab of metal that was thrown at full force... As an added little bonus, a big diamond in the middle of the boomerangs have their own purpose--if the light hits it a certain way as it's flying, it'll make a brilliantly bright glare, which can serve to either blind or distract foes. Gorgeon once had 10 of these boomerangs, in case he lost some, though only a few broken or rotten ones have ever been found.

Albino Venatavis have almost always had a bad reputation, even in King Gorgeon's time, but Gorgeon treated them differently. He viewed them as people, not beasts, people who were outcasted out of the fear of the unknown, and he took it upon himself to try and aid them. One such Albino Venatavis, Ragnarok, was so moved by the King's kindness, he swore loyalty to him and became the King's third greatest warrior and specialized armor and weapon crafter. Ragnarok had originally come from a snowy locale, and knew of ice that never melts under the most extreme temperatures, and used this knowledge to gift the King with tools, and a city in Shiverglow... A city that would later be enchanted by the First...

One Venatavis, a former assassin and alchemist from the Simmerlands, once caught wind of Gorgeon's fame, and travelled across the sea to challenge the King to a battle of wits in exchange for his services. Novus was the name he gave himself when he set aside his past of murder, and being thoroughly impressed at how Gorgeon went about solving the puzzles and situations he set before him, Novus became the King's second greatest warrior, and shared secrets of alchemy and survival with him, such as what ingredients are needed for a potion that causes the Venatavis' body to stop sweating and giving off a scent, and how to make a special waterproof paint to be used on his feathers, should he need a disguise. Being a former assassin himself, he also took up the role of being the King's closest bodyguard, as he knew best how assassins think.

And then there was Mios, the first greatest warrior of Gorgeon, though he was not always this. Mios was a rather unusual pick, in the eyes of the people, to be one in Gorgeon's court, he was a Jungle Venatavis born with the rare birth defect that rendered him unable to breathe fire or poison foes with his wing talons, his whole body was almost a solid deep blue color with very subtle markings, and not even the crest on his head was impressive--by Venatavis standards, he was ugly, but Mios had a wondering mind that questioned why. Why was he born with this defect? Why can't the Venatavis use magic while so many other species can?

But Mios didn't wallow in self-pity, he put his mind to finding the answers to those questions, and when Gorgeon appointed him to be his chief scholar and researcher, he gained the resources to do so, and over the course of many years, he discovered the secrets that allow his species to channel and control magic...

But Gorgeon did not want these secrets to be shared with the world, as he feared what would happen if every Venatavis gained magic, and so Mios enchanted a stone and hid the secrets within it, so only a Venatavis holding the stone can awaken their sleeping magic. With this, Mios became Gorgeon's First greatest warrior, and continued his studies of magic, to determine the pros and cons of wielding it, and what negative effects it might have.

Together, the Three did wonderful things for their King, but they each wanted to make something more personal out of their respect for him, so one day, the Three gathered together and discussed what they could do. Mios brought a prototype invisibility cloak he had been working on and suggested making something similar for Gorgeon, but Ragnarok wasn't satisfied with something that wouldn't protect the King in the heat of battle, and would only allow the King the option of a coward's retreat. He then suggested a suit of armor, made from the eternal ice, but Novus disagreed, as a suit of heavy, shiny ice would take time to put on and take off, and he suggested that whatever they make ought to be discreet and easy to use, so their King could make the most use out of it. Mios then got the idea... to merge all of those suggestions into one, and make something discreet like a jeweled collar or such, that can serve as an invisibility cloak and shape-shift into a suit of armor on command. Ragnarok and Novus both agreed to this idea, and the Three went to work on their own parts, Ragnarok took the finest gold and rubies from his treasure hoard and gathered some of the eternal ice for the collar, and went about designing how the armor itself should look, Novus took it upon himself to design the collar and work out the little details, like insulating the inside to ensure it wouldn't freeze the King, and Mios worked out the specifics of the magic, making the collar only be able to be used by the true King of the Venatavis.

During the creation of the collar, the Three discovered they could not quite make it with the magic Mios had at the time, and they requested aid from a select group of Dreamers to ensure the collar would shape-shift as intended.

The Crown of the King, as they named the collar, is another ancient artifact that has been lost to time, and no one has ever been able to find it, or the prototype invisibility cloak Mios first made.

Despite all the good Gorgeon is said to have done, he went down in history as a Traitor King, as when Soledormir revealed himself and started wreaking havoc on the Realms, Gorgeon sided with the Chaos King to save his own skin, leaving his people in chaos without a King... He took his Three warriors with him, and any who saw him in Soledormir's domain reported that he acted more like a mindless parrot than a person as he lived his life being pampered and praised.

How odd, considering a Key was made in his likeness, and considering how Soledormir's forces later ravaged Gorgeon's kingdoms with a fury unlike the world had ever seen, breaking the Venatavis species to such a point that they no longer build their grand cities of wood and build simple nests out of fear of being targeted again, and that to this day, Venatavis born with purple eyes and sunset colors are rare, due to shadowy creatures hunting them down.

No one knows whatever happened to the King of Heaven's Pinions or his Three, but some would say that Gorgeon left his secrets with the Snow Feathers, and Those Who Guard the Stars.

But who among them is left to tell the story, and who knows the truth?

Venatavis are generally very social birds, living in little communities and small villages and looking out for each other. Jungle Venatavis build great nests wedged in their giant trees, while Desert Venatavis build smaller nests of mud in the sides of cliffs, towering trees, or near oases. Albinos tend to migrate to colder areas, building houses or caves out of ice in regions that are perpetually frozen.

They also tend to be very crafty people, in all sense of the word--Venatavis love tinkering around with things and inventing things, whether it's with wood, stone, etc., and they love figuring out how things work. They're absolutely fascinated by everything shiny as well, and collect for themselves hoards of treasure (and anything else that appeals to them). Stealing from a Venatavis' hoard is an atrocious crime in their culture, almost up there with murder, and depending on the value of what's stolen, the punishment can range from something precious being taken from the criminal in return, to utter humiliation, to even death...

Venatavis generally tend to make close-knit family units and strong communities, Albinos even more so than the others, and sometimes can tend to be wary of strangers. They each have roles and jobs to keep the village going: hunting, logging, researching and making medicines, building, enforcing laws, etc, and then some for sports or entertainment.

One occupation unique to Venatavis is "woodsmithing," which mostly takes the place of blacksmithing. Venatavis don't do much with metals, but they love working with wood, and in their worlds, they have special oils that allow them to craft wooden weapons, armor, and tools that are just as strong and durable as steel, but lighter in weight. They also can fireproof and waterproof their wooden tools, armor, etc., and they paint it to make it all fancy and pretty. While I'm sure there's different variations, the main body pieces of wood armor can and are mass produced. Helmets are made specifically to match the individual Venatavis' crest feathers and can do different things. Victis can rattle the wood plates on the back of his headpiece. Helmets have a special latch on them to allow the mouth to open or remain closed.

The Venatavis Combat Regiment (VCR) and the Venatavis Research Commission (VRC) are the Venatavis organizations with the most government to them, one being the organization for general warfare, peacekeeping, and enforcing laws while the other focuses on recording history, documenting wide ranges of information, and the betterment of the people. Their headquarters in the Simmerlands. Their base is built into a giant tree, likely one of the oldest trees in Euphoria. Their goal is to unite the smaller villages and tribes of Venatavis and to make quality of life improvements by creating new inventions or making information more easily accesable.

But, generally speaking, most Venatavis you'd come across are nice and respectable, there's just always some bad apples and bad groups out there somewhere. In the eyes of some, they are even seen as symbols of an unfaltering morality.

However, Albinos are treated differently in Euphoria and the worlds connected to the Land of Dreams. Albinos generally have incredibly short lifespans, the oldest known Albino being Danger at 44 years of age. This isn't because of how quickly they age, if given the opportunity, they could live to be as old as any other Venatavis, if not older. No, the reason they do not live long is because of their aggression. Albino Venatavis are highly territorial and aggressive, and generally get into more fights and scuffles with other creatures, leading to much more life-threatening situations. What's more, in some places there are even hunters who track down and slay Albino Venatavis, whether it's on the basis of them being a threat or simply for sport.

Despite the reputation they hold and their generally aggressive nature, Albino Venatavis are not mindless, bloodthirsty beasts. They can speak if they learn or are taught, and not all of them are as violent as the rest. Anyone who earns an Albino's trust has an unfaltering ally and friend, as they are loyal to a fault, and would be willing to put their lives on the line to protect their loved ones.

Unfortunately, the Venatavis culture in Euphoria does not help in this regard, as others of the species are terrified of Albinos, and most parents who have Albino chicks abandon their children to fend for themselves, or else be forced to flee their village and live in secret, though even those few of the latter would likely live in fear of their own child. Albinos are likewise not welcomed into any village of Venatavis, and their presence alone would incite panic in everyone there. In a sad twist of irony, the Venatavis groom the Albinos into being the very monsters they expect them to be, without even realizing it...

Venatavis marry one partner of the opposite gender, and only one. The two Venatavis are together for life, or until death. While Venatavis do base a lot of things on beauty, when it comes to marriage, beauty is only the beginning. When a hen and rooster seriously begin to consider marrying, they will each go to their own families and inform them, at which point they put on a new "show." The young couple do their best to go about their lives as they normally would, but this time spending their days with their partner, working together and really seeing how each one is while they work, while the parents or even siblings watch them. Nights are spent apart, with each one going back to their own family. This continues for at least a year or two. If the couple choose to carry through with getting married after that period of time, they are taken by the leader of the village to a bit more of a secretive spot near the village in the night of the next full moon. At this point, they are forbidden from putting any makeup, jewelry, or anything on, as this is a ceremony to show how genuine their love is, and to see that they love each other no matter what either one looks like. After exchanging their vows under the white moonlight, they are allowed to go back home. The next day, their union is announced to the rest of the village, and they throw a party for the new flock.

Venatavis can breed and produce offspring with nearly any bird or dragon species, however they can only produce after their own kind and cannot breed with anything that's not a dragon or bird. A Venatavis pairing with any other bird species would have a significantly lower chance of producing offspring with the Albino mutation, while a Venatavis pairing with a dragon of any species is guaranteed to always produce Albino offspring. Venatavis eggs are the size of an ostrich's egg, and smooth with a creamy speckled shell. A female Venatavis will usually lay between 2-4 eggs at a time.

It is forbidden in villages in Euphoria and the surrounding areas for Venatavis to pair with dragons, and those that do are shunned and outcast by everyone else in the village. While it's pretty uncommon, there have been cases of Venatavis slandering and ruining each other's lives by falsely claiming that the one has eloped with some dragon, causing the poor soul much disgrace and the possibility of being outcast, however the consequences are equally as severe on the lying Venatavis should his or her crime be discovered; while the victim would only be exiled if the enemy made a believable lie with enough "evidence," the liar would immediately be exiled once the truth has come out.

It is currently unknown what would happen if a Venatavis mated with a Lauervogel.

The information that has been presented here revolves mostly around the Venatavis in Euphoria and the worlds connected to the Land of Dreams (as these worlds were the first ones I specified they were in on Colors and I never shared much about Altoria), however, there are some stark differences between these worlds and the Venatavis homeworld of Altoria.

For starters, the Venatavis in Euphoria only build nest-like homes, and live in villages and tribes. They once made towering structures and had a grand city, even a kingdom on Skyfall Isle once, but after King Gorgeon's betrayal and Soledormir's continual attacks, their civilization has crumbled. However, in Altoria, the Jungle Venatavis have a kingdom with towers and even castles nestled in the giant trees. The Desert Venatavis likewise have their own cities in the desert regions, with an intricate and unique style of mud buildings. There is no threat of Soledormir there, so their society flourishes and continually advances.

Another smaller difference between Altoria and these other worlds is the population of the Venatavis. In Euphoria, Jungle Venatavis are the most common, and Jungle and Desert Venatavis rarely ever meet or cross paths. In Altoria, Desert Venatavis are the most common, but their society intermingles and meets with the Jungle variety on a regular basis, and it's not uncommon to find Jungle Venatavis in the desert regions or vice versa.

But perhaps the biggest difference between the worlds is the Albinos themselves. In Euphoria and those surrounding worlds, Albinos are feared for their aggressive nature, are shunned, and are nearly extinct. However, in Altoria, it's the opposite picture--Albinos are not naturally aggressive or dangerous, they are not feared, they are not rare, and they are accepted into society as if they were any other Venatavis. Some could even say they are looked upon better than other Venatavis because of their pure white feathers, being reminiscient of the White Dragon Rinaru. It's unknown at the current time why the Albinos in Euphoria become so hostile and dangerous while the ones in Altoria are not, perhaps it is simply the nature of the two worlds. Or perhaps there's something more... Unfortunately, travel between Altoria and Euphoria has become extremely difficult due to circumstances in the Universe of Dreams, and Soledormir complicates this even more with his forces of evil.

Venatavis are a closed species. While I originally gave them out and offered Draw-to-Adopts and other adopts on Colorslive, I doubt I will do so anymore, and will only give them to people I trust.

I have decided to allow Venatavis to be drawn and shared on other sites outside of Colors, only on the conditions that I am credited on each and every picture drawn, and that the same art is shared with me as well/I am notified in some way or another that a picture has been done of a Venatavis.

Also, as owner and creator of the Venatavis species, I request that every person who owns a Venatavis does not make his/her Venatavis gay, lesbian, or any sexuality that does not match the Venatavis' gender. I understand that perhaps this might be offensive to some, but it would make me unbearably uncomfortable to see one of my species being any one of those. I do not care what other people do with other random designs I make or have made, but this is my species, and is a lot more personal to me. The rest of the Venatavis' story and personality is completely open to their owners; Would you like a murdering criminal or thief on the run from the law? You could have a Venatavis like that. Would you want a bounty hunter or an officer? Or treasure hunter? A loner and recluse? A flamboyant performer? I don't mind whatever story or personality anyone comes up with for their Venatavis, again, I simply request that they are kept straight, and match the gender they are when given out.
