story

Although he was born in L Corp's Nest, Griffin Kurosawa followed his mother's line of work and trained to join the Shi Association as soon as he came of age. Like other Shi Fixers, his fighting style was adapted to kill swiftly and surely. Even if he did miss at an opportune moment, which rarely happened, his remarkable strength enabled him to quickly overpower his foes. Despite his size, he was light on his feet, with footsteps perfectly silent. Above all, he held no empathy for his targets—eliminating them was merely his duty.

It wasn't originally his plan to quit the Shi Association. However, he one day received news that his mother was in the hospital for a mortal injury she received from an assignment. On her death bed, she told him the truth as to why he grew up with only a single parent. She apparently hooked up with a Claw for one night, insisting he was "damn hot behind that mask," and when contraception failed, she decided to keep the baby. Next, she told him her dying wish was that he quit the Fixer business and find a job that would ensure his longevity.

He learned two things that day. One, his mother had to have been an incredible Fixer if she supported herself and a child while paying rent in the Nest. Two, if she was so incredible, then he never lived up to her expectations. He was a Grade 4 Fixer with the potential to be a Grade 1, but he never saw a reason to apply himself. He never cared if he died young—he was and still is exhausted by his own existence, which convinced him that trying to get promoted would only bring him more meaningless work. But the demands of people who cared about him gave his life purpose. Rather than lecturing his mother on the futility of trying to extend his lifespan in a hellish world such as the City, he heeded her dying words and applied to their Nest's Wing.

Although he was hired late into the 50-day loop at Lobotomy Corporation's HQ, thanks to his previous job experience, he was able to quickly raise his virtues to the point where he was promoted to Captain of the Extraction Team upon the department's opening. He impressed Lady Binah when he witnessed her draw from the Well and remained completely unfazed by it. When she confronted him about this, he explained his unique ability to simply shut out his thinking mind from the world for a brief period of time. It was the same ability that allowed him to kill without remorse. The two often engage in lengthy discussions during downtime about the human condition and the quality of life for individuals in different parts of the City. Corbinian occassionally joins in these discussions, but only if there's tea available.

Since his days in the Shi Association, an unsettling aura surrounds Griffin that drives others to steer clear from him. He never means harm, but people cannot bring themselves to trust him. This is unhelped by his sarcastic inflection even when he's seriously being nice, cynical view on life, and genuine shyness preventing him from initiating conversations. Mason is one of the only people who never cared about Griffin's attitude, seeing as he gives off his own threatening aura.

Because of people's general aversion to him, they also fail to notice his unhealthy habits. Drinking until he's blackout drunk, smoking through packs of cigarettes in a single week, trying drugs from shifty dealers just for the hell of it—he is not simply indulging in debauchery or recklessly taking advantage of his youth. Sure, being needed by others gives him a reason to live, but that hasn't stopped him from trying to dwindle the years off his lifespan without resorting to outright suicide. Death is inevitable, and he'd like it to pay him a visit him sooner rather than later because every second spent alive is agony to him.

It wasn't until his transfer into the newly opened Extraction Department that he started to change his mind. It is unsure exactly what Lady Binah said to him during one of their many conversations that prompted him to take on a different view, but although he'll still welcome death with open arms, he has begun to wane off of his addictions. For that, Griffin is secretly devoted to following her should her loyalties ever change...

Trivia

  • Resident Binah simp.
  • He knew about Yujin before she became a director. Before leaving the Shi Association, he had heard about a remarkable newbie from Section 2 who was quickly ascending the ranks.
  • Frequently persuades Netzach to give him enkephalin. They can be found high on it together before Taengtaeng snitches on them to Yesod.
  • He is the only employee that can look at [CENSORED] without going insane. The incomprehensibility of it simply bounces off his head like a ping-pong ball.
  • This also means Griffin has seen the Well without going insane. He doesn't know how, and he'd rather not know why he's like this. He believes it has something to do with his dad being a Claw.
  • He can resonate with his Smile weapon to turn it into a morningstar. The chain length can extend as long as he needs it to, essentially allowing him to use it as a long-ranged weapon. His deadliest attack with the morningstar allows his hammer's head to bite onto an enemy from afar, and if the bite isn't enough to kill them, he can throw them around with extreme force until they either perish or pry themselves free.
  • Probably the most sane Smile nugget out there. He'll take a Binah body pillow over a corpse. When he needs to do his "clean-up" job, he gets his E.G.O. to do it for him.

In his Shi Association days, he is used to sneaking up on his opponents or ambushing them to end conflicts within seconds. However, Smile shines in long, drawn-out fights against enemies with high speed and stamina. He is either one-shotting smallfries with this E.G.O. or constantly engaging the enemy in battle.
