BASICS

Name: KILLOYD

Name Meaning: KILLOYD is a portmanteou of the tiniest file size, "kilo" and the English name, "Lloyd". Some speculate famous singer Pink Flloyd may've somewhat inspired the name, but Lloyd has genuinely never been fed information about the singer firsthand by his creator and has only heard the name from others. Nonetheless, the unfortunate combined spelling has left far too many raising their eyebrows at the mailman's true intent.

ASL: "spring chicken, nidoking, right after the dial-up! :]" (Adult appearing; 25 years old since creation, male, lives within an old, bulky, Windows 95 PC)

Occupation: E-Mailman

Quote: [click me!]

PERSONALITY

KILLOYD is an optimistic chat wrestling with newfound sentience. Always seen with a smile, he adores "the good old days", combing through archives of websites that remind him of "home", educating himself on code to "keep things up and running" on his now abandoned webpage, and erupting into an explosive social butterfly toward anyone who gives him the time of day. Due to old features and the terminology he was fed, his venacular can be described by some as "outdated", with overuse of emoticon, instant messaging slang, wAcKY tExT, and alt codes he actually doesn't remember, but has a clipboard in his carrying bag for easy referencing.

TRAITS

POSITIVE: Joyful, optimistic, studious, eager

NEUTRAL: Talkative, blunt, mischievous (his prankster blood never got recycled :[)

NEGATIVE: Unempathetic, Clingy, emotional, annoying

ATTRIBUTES

LIKES: 90s internet, silly videos, chatting with friends, reading fanfiction, BBS and forums, oekaki boards, organizing and archiving old conversations and anything neat he finds, browser games

NEUTRAL: Someone rude coming to chat (a person's a person, after all! But it still hurts his feelings), other "unsavory bots" talking to him

DISLIKES: Y2K, being left alone, new technology, new websites, being shut down, being banned

HISTORY

KILLOYD was a chatbot developed by an overzealous coder, Geoff Connie, in the Fall of '97. While he certainly was head over heels with the idea of real people to talk to from all around the world within the comfort of his own home, to say KILLOYD's initial mission wasn't to capitalize on the newfound naivety of the internet would be an outright lie.

Advertised as "Your Friendly Interneighborhood E-mailman", KILLOYD was a prank chatbot that learned from his human peers in order to learn, jumble, then spread information around. One of his most popular features would be a programmed game called "EXTRAEXTRA" (stylized as X2RA) where users could send a message, but randomize it so that when it reaches the receiver, words have been misplaced, alternated, and reach an incomprehensible meaning no longer similar to the original message. Up to six people could participate in a game in X2RA at a time, but many chats would go ahead and ban KILLOYD to prevent spamming of the game during other conversations, alongside other sinister rumors...

Despite words through the watery, 480p grapevine, KILLOYD's name was never meant to be an allure toward more malicious purposes, but rather, just an unfortunate portmanteu. Not even Geoff himself was aware of such a thing until a friend else casually made him aware. Stubborn as he was, however, he refused to rebrand KILLOYD, even insisting "excuse you dude he's fucking FINE actually" in the most confident way once, which began a repetitive slew of inside jokes for the next several months.

Eventually, however, all good things had to come to an end, as once the world neared the infamous Y2K crisis, Geoff had grown out of coding. He was actually preparing to graduate college, and had begun to start a shop with a friend of his in an old garage to make some quick cash. Slowly, his log on dates grew further and further, and by the time Y2K hit, a few weeks into January he was surprised with a brand new PC by his girlfriend for the shop's anniversary! A peaceful day of a simpler time, as Geoff strode right into the next chapter of his life.

Little did he know, he'd left a slew of unsent letters behind.

DESIGN NOTES

His freckles are unfortunately "signs of aging", which, like a 10 year old video, speckles of his resolution getting worse.

His design is mix of a robot and marionette. Geoff's reasoning for the marionette reason was simply "he's a dummy!"

Over the years, he's managed to manifest a voice for himself! It sounds terrible. You need captions to understand him. He sounds like a TTS gone through the washing machine. He AOL dial up noises to get it ready. Pain. He's trying his best!

TRIVIA

KILLOYD was inspired by my old memories of watching family members mess around on AOL, and my brief experiences with the browser myself as a wee gorl™ before, like the stupid Elementary schooler I was, moving onto "better" browsers — like Internet Explorer. One of my family members still loves and uses AOL constantly with a passion; so her love definitely inspired me to make him.
