Trainer is Polly.

She was born to ill parents bred together by an irresponsible backyard breeder in Paldea, so she was born sickly but still sold to the first person to pay for her. She ended up being too much for that person to handle, and in distress, Penelope (not her original name) ran away from them. After starving for weeks lost, she stumbled across Polly, who took her in and renamed her.

Her ears are a visual symptom of an inherited cartilage defect (a disease) that causes constant pain due to arthritis which worsens with age. Unfortunately, it's incurable. It results from lousy inbreeding, done deliberately because the folded ear trait "looks cute." Penelope has been prescribed long-term pain relief and placed on a specific diet by Pokémon Center doctors.
