Early life

Kamalei's has very few memories of biological parents, being abandoned by his mother at a young age, growing up on the streets of Radz at Han and surviving by pickpocketing people in the markets. One day he goes after the wrong person, a wealthy Au Ra textiles trader named Baasan, and is immediately caught by them. Instead of punishing Kamalei or letting him go, Baasan offers him the chance to make up for his slight by becoming their apprentice. Unmarried and without children, Baasan becomes the closest he ever has to real a parental figure. However despite eventually coming to genuinely care for Kamalei they were usually distant and strict mentor, rarely showing affection aside from praise when Kamalei did something well.

Growing up as Baasan's pupil, Kamalei's life changed from barely surviving to a plush lifestyle where all his needs were met, getting an expensive education and learning from Baasan firsthand about business. Initially a reclusive and socially awkward child, Kamalei's mentor taught him how assess other's emotions and pinpoint their weaknesses to be exploited. In their teachings they also firmly instilled the idea in Kamalei that people are untrustworthy, that all relationships are founded on some sort of give and take; that anyone seemingly friendly in the end just wants something from you, and if you ever lose that, you lose them as well.

Adulthood

Kamalei grew a sizable ego and social standing over the years with Baasan, and eventually in his young adulthood the two became at odds, Baasan certain that Kamalei was still too lacking in knowledge about how the world worked to succeed them, and him taking that as a blow to his pride. After a particularly bad argument, Kamalei struck out on his own, only to realize his mentor was right as he struggled to find his own footing in the world with their guidance (his jobless era). He was still too prideful to return home however, and began to seek out less savory forms of employment. During this time his Echo manifested, and he used his new abilities and remaining connections from working with Baasan to take up jobs as an informant.

Even after finding a stable job at a rival trading company, Kamalei didn't give up his night life, finding he quite enjoyed the game of wheedling secrets out of people. Eventually this also led to him taking on some assassination jobs as well, as long as the pay was good and the job didn't conflict with his own interests. Him and Baasan's relationship however, was nonexistent for awhile, Kamalei only reaching out to slowly make amends years later. Aside from them, he lacks meaningful relationships, too guarded to ever be genuine with most people, and when he is, its almost always him spitting venom at them. He dislikes anyone being able to read him like he can read others, and refuses to believe he has any need for deeper relationships.

Echo

Kamalei's Echo grants him the ability hear the thoughts of others under certain circumstances. It's ineffective when he's distracted or around groups of people, only registering as scrambled noise he can't filter through. Its mainly effective when he's focused on one person without others around, and is far more potent with skin to skin contact, sometimes granting him access to random memories (similar to the the visions the WoL gets). However this second form of his ability goes both ways, the other person also receiving snippets of his mind as well, and is one of the reasons he's so averse to touch, wearing gloves and long sleeves whenever he can.
