Sometime in the Sengoku period, a losing shogun ordered a monastery to create a powerful, undefeated army to serve to replace its diminishing militia. That day, 300 monks gave up their lives to summon 30 warriors of unbelievable power; such warriors were ranked from 30 to 1 in order of their strength. When the shogunate ended, the warriors dispersed to look for new masters, for their existence could only be allowed as long as they were servants. All 30 collectively form the shogun kashin.

Black-Bandage Banji (or "Benny" as he prefers nowadays) is the tenth senshi of the shogun kashin, making him one of the most powerful senshi of the shogun kashin. All senshi have a "mark" where their source of power comes from, usually visible in their body - Benny's mark is large and concealed with bandages within his torso and fists, not usually revealed unless he must fight a particularly powerful opponent. It's rare to see Benny fight, much less with his bandages off.

He's usually seen with Urahara, commonly referred to as the "kashin brothers" (in a "brotherhood" sense than a "brotherly" one) due to the fact that the two seemed to be together from the Sengoku era up to the present - and the smarter one of the two. Benny essentially prevents Urahara from becoming too trigger-happy, unless the situation calls to unleash him like a dog. Both currently serve a... divorced man in his 40s, trying to get revenge on his ex-wife, who employs senshi of her own. Modern times bring on odd jobs and troubles...

Trivia:
- Somewhat serious... though easily distracted by well-endowed women
- Slit- and pin-eyed. Looks pretty strict and scary, but otherwise quite easygoing
- Very easily flayed by modern hedonism... accepted his master on the basis of money
