Appearance
Tailflower is a tiny, lichen-green coloured pseudo harpy with small clawed hands that are often seen fidgeting. He's got good posture thanks to his royal upbringing, but otherwise isn't one for formality, and is often seen stretching, trying to be at least a bit closer to his enemies and allies. He has beady brown eyes and red ears that are often perked up. He's often seen draped in beaded jewelery, feathers and the like, and his most obvious natural features are his bright red brows and red tail, which is also his namesake.

BACKSTORY

Nestling-Fledgeling
Tailflower mother, Helloborine, was an heir to the Rainforest throne. The eldest of two siblings, she spent her time practicing medicine and strategy, seeking to help her fellow harpys both on and off the battlefield.During her time out on the field, she’d met a spunky trapper named Pineapple. His battle prowess and charismatic nature brought her comfort even in the heat of battle. Over time, the two fell in love, the front-liner always promising his return when he left for battle. Her duties as a medic were halted at her father’s death, putting it to the side in favor of commanding the throne. Even after she’d come to power, she’d consistently write to her lover out in the field. They had a clutch together, bearing a single small egg. Though his time with the little thing was sparse, he promised his Queen and love that he’d be back before the egg hatched. Unfortunately, it was a promise he couldn’t keep, being struck down in battle after an ambush at the Northern border.

Word of King Pineapple’s death came days after Tailflower hatched, and once it reached the Queen’s ears, she was ridden with grief. Holding the tiny pink hatchling as tears streamed from her eyes, she swore that her little one would never face the same fate. She would protect him from this war by whatever means necessary.

As time carried on and Tailflower grew, any mention of the war was forbidden around the young prince. His mother would not allow him to learn its horrors, but even she knew she couldn’t hide the entirety of it from him. She elected to homeschool him, teaching him how to write and fly, how to manage a kingdom, and the traditions of both the Rainforest and Plains kingdoms. Although he was learning a lot, more than the average student would be at least, there was a certain subject he was lacking in. The ability to make friends. Sure, he had his mom, and the General and council, but they weren’t exactly his age, and they certainly couldn’t play with him with how much they had on their hands. So he spent a lot of time just following his mother around, anxiously hiding behind her when someone new came to the palace. While he’d been introduced to Wolfsbane, the roo hadn’t quite known what to think of the large hippus, choosing to hide under his mom instead.

Sub-adult
As the young prince aged, his mother continued to homeschool him. His nervous behavior with social interaction did not go unnoticed by her, so she asked that her council find suitable students that could learn alongside him. They handpicked the most promising students to be taught by his mother and the General, though Tailflower was less than happy with this arrangement. He let his mother know this too, huffing and puffing about, asking why he needed to be in a full class when he was learning just fine?! His thoughts at the time were a bit more on the selfish side, agitated with the fact that he would not only have to share his mother’s attention, but with total strangers?? This little ‘tantrum’ of his lasted for days, the little roo either sulking in his room or begrudgingly following the others around in an attempt to convince them not to go through with it. All his pleading fell on deaf ears as the day arrived where he would be forced into a classroom rather than his mother’s quarters to be educated.

He held a nervous yet sour expression, tail twitching and hands fiddling constantly as he not so subtly eyed the other students that waltzed in. His agitation was doused with anxiety as they took their seats, a sense of dread overcoming the prince at the realization that this really was happening. While his mother looked more than pleased with how it was going, Tailflower couldn’t help but slightly lean away from the blue and tan roo that’d been placed in the seat next to him. The prince hardly even listened to what was being taught, stuck stewing in his own thoughts as the time ticked on.

Over the course of the month, he found that it wasn’t ‘that’ bad. He’d come to learn that the harpy the prince found himself sat next to was named Banksia. Banksia was a bit of a nervous fellow, often holding himself to strict standards just like the others, but that didn’t stop Tailflower from acting up and trying to get his new buddy wrapped up in the tomfoolery.

Adult
Despite the Queen’s best efforts, she could never hope to keep her heir from knowing what was going on in the wider world. She kept her statements brief, that the rainforest needed land and that the Northern and Mountain kingdoms were trying to steal it. With that thought in mind, she informed the young prince that she was going out to help protect their people against the pawed forces at the border. You’d think he was a mere fledgling again with how much he protested her departure, pleading with her not to leave him alone. But like always, her decision was final and not up for debate, no matter how much he cried for it to change. When his mother left, he spent his time sulking in his quarters, getting exceptionally snappy with the harpies around the palace as though they were the reason for the Queen's absence. He elected to busy himself with the things he and his mother usually did together, crafting little necklaces made of wooden beads and seabird feathers, as well as reading the books and scrolls that littered her shelves. It didn’t help that Banksia was off fighting in the war as well, unable to keep Tailflower company during this…trying time. At least he sent letters, even with how mundane or impersonal they may appear, the young prince treasured every one he received and was quick to write back. Despite the distance between them, they continued to grow closer as the seasons passed.

His heart shattered the day he got news of his mothers passing. Captain Banksia had just returned from the field a few days prior, his joy turning to ash the second the swiftwing uttered those horrid words. His mother had not been felled by the tip of a blade, but by an illness that had run rampant through the camp. He felt sick. This…this wasn’t happening. It couldn’t have happened! His disbelief turned to outrage, hissing at the messenger with venom on his tongue, “You’re lying. You’re LYING!” His shrill voice echoed through the hall, the only thing stopping the prince from outright assaulting the poor swiftwing was Banksia’s arms that were desperately trying to keep him in place. As the messenger harpy fled the scene, Tailflower could feel his body start to collapse, as his voice came out as a quiet, pitiful plea, “They’re lying…they’re lying Banksia.” The Captain’s arms were still holding him from completely falling onto the floor, the prince desperately clinging onto the roo like a piece of driftwood in a raging flood, the only thing keeping him from drowning in this overwhelming sea of despair.

Not long after he’d risen to the throne, the truce was announced. The small king’s heart still brewed with hate towards the North, furious that he wouldn’t have the opportunity to punish the dastardly Queen for taking away his mother. For two years, he’d spent with Wolfsbane and the other monarchs to come to terms with a proper peace treaty to settle the war that’d been raging for generations. Tailflower wasn’t too happy with it either, the Northern Kingdom receiving a chunk of their land that they fought to keep! Though he wasn’t going to be the one to break this little treaty, as much as he hated it he knew his mother would have wanted this. To have peace. The treaty did end up shattering, but not by his hand. The Mountain Queen proclaimed that he’d poisoned her mother Zinnia, her massive claws rising up in rage as he felt his heart stop, eyes locked on its downward descent. He couldn’t remember much over the blood rushing in his ears, nor the hammering of his heart. All he can recall was that Banksia had moved in front to protect him at some point, and that Wolfsbane had taken the blow. Fleeing the Mountain Kingdom’s capital after the new Queen’s outburst, it wasn’t until a raid on the edge of his kingdom that the truce had been officially broken.

Since the event, he’d kept more or less silent, unsure of what to do or how to command this sort of situation. He just…needed some time to think, he knew Banksia could handle it, and his council would be there to help. Yes, he just needs some time to think…

RELATIONSHIPS

KIN AND CLOSE RELATIONSHIPS:

Late Queen Helleborine Mother, loved her very much and was devastated when she passed. She was a near-constant presence in his life, even during the times where she had to help her people in the front lines. Even with the time that's passed, he feels incredibly lost without her.
Late King Pineapple Father, Pineapple unfortunately died before Tailflower hatched, but he has grown to have lots of respect for the roo with how much his mother talked about him in high praise.

OTHER:

Banksia General, childhood friend that he cares for very much, though Tailflower has been keeping his distance as of late.
Minnow Royal guard, trusts she'll protect him but is still kinda intimidated by her.
Bubo Royal guard, although loyal, prefers him a little less than Minnow due to his loud behavior.
