Adopted at birth by two marine biologists in Hau’oli City, Darius Campbell has experienced the majority of their life on, above, or below water. Having spent most of their childhood learning how to dive and sail, and research the caretaking of various marine Pokemon with their fathers, they hold extensive knowledge on all things nautical - even going so far as to build their own boat and surfboard in their 20s.

What Darius knows of battling, they know of from following in their fathers’ steps - while juggling a budding boarding career and extensive studying in school, once 18 they chose to shoot for the newly established Alolan League. Couple this with a rising influencer account on social media, and some began to wonder how the man was keeping it up without cracking.

Still.. he managed to go through with stellar results. Breezing through each trial with calm and collected demeanor, Darius would swiftly rise to the top of the League and.. simply quit. Once at the summit, something about this last trial seemed to change the man who looked at that last door and breathed a content sigh before turning around and heading home.

At 21, Darius began to feel the nagging sensation of burnout. Doing so much, so early in life, for so long without much of a break for themselves - they decided to take a gap year. And then another.. and another.. until four had passed. Coming back to their parents proved to be a monumental and embarrassing effort as their dynamo child’s momentum slowed to a screeching halt as the engine finally ran out of fumes.. but they were understanding.

Something needed to change, for Darius to feel like he was making something of himself - Imposter Syndrome having set in over the years, they decided to part for Sinnoh, in Sunnyshore City, where they could start over with a smaller marine lab on the coast. It was a quiet few years for them, a simple day job with daily research and a routine - but they kept battling on the side.

They couldn’t quite describe it, but after four years away, they’d found an itch they couldn’t scratch with spars and the occasional scuffle. Darius started peering toward the Sinnoh League after a while.. and even attempted several gyms, catching the attention of the Sunnyshore leader. Several months later, Darius was quitting his job entirely and starting an apprenticeship under the leader’s wing.

Time can only tell what kind of leader the biologist turned beach bum might be after the events of River Shore’s death..
