John Watson is a hardheaded, sturdy man. He believes very strongly in his himself and sticks by it. He has an attraction to adrenaline and danger, which is why he finds himself drawn to Sherlock Holmes. He can be a bit impulsive and quick to jump the gun, throwing himself into dangerous situations complusively. He's not very self aware and doesn't realize his subconcious desire for action, trying to ignore it and live what he hopes can be a simple life.
He's compassionate to almost everyone, including strangers, and has a natural desire to help and protect. John concerns himself deeply with matters of emotion, and finds it easy to sympathize with those around him. He can be a bit snarky, rude, or aloof, but only when distracted by some other outwards influence, and he is always quick to apologize. Tries his best to be kind and polite, but can't help his hotheadedness. John has no issue with being bossy and assertive if he believes the situation calls for it.

Childhood
John lived in a rather nuclear family. He grew up with a mother, father, and older sibling in rural England. His family was, by no means, the best. His sister Harriet was a sort of teenage delinquent, never doing well in school and always getting herself into trouble. John, a people pleaser, was often tryig to overachieve to make up for his sisters failings in an attempt to make his parents proud, but all it really did was create a rift of resentment between the two siblings. His parents weren't exactly the best either, struggling through financial issues and alcohol abuse. They often would verbally take out their frustrations on both children.

Teenage
Harriet, who often spent most her time out of the house, got a girlfriend named Clara who she started to spend more and more time with. John, to Harry's annoyance, would tag along to get out of the house. He got on well with Harry's girlfriend, who took on a secondary older sister role for him. After a tragic car crash left both of John's parents dead, he and Harriet moved in with Clara. John, determined to do some good with his life and be better than his parents, began studying to become a doctor.

Young Adult
As soon as John turned 18, he left home to become an army doctor. The time he spent serving was very short and has gone mostly untalked about, but he was sent home after a few years due to an injury. When John returned to London, he was dismayed to find that Harry and started falling into the same alcholic tendencies her parents had, and had subsequentially split with Clara. In the meantime, Clara was struggling to make ends meet financially. Not wanting to stay with his sister and not wanting to burden Clara further, John decided it would be best to find a flatmate to stay in London. Enter Sherlock Holmes, someone looking for the exact same thing.
Partner
John's flatmate, best friend, partner, and sun. John struggles to define how he feels about Sherlock, and is scared to admit he truly loves them. The two are very close, even though their relationship can be rocky at times. Somewhere in between romantic and platonic.
Friend
Lestrade and John only really know eachother through Sherlock, and as such don't have a very strong relationship. They seem to get on just fine, though, and sometimes go out for a drink together to chat.
very tense allyship
John and Mycroft have a very unpleasant relationship. John harbors a lot of frustration towards the older man and finds him to be a self-righteous asshole who does nothing but endanger him and Sherlock. They try to remain polite to eachother, but John often fails at doing this.
