About

Experiment R074 was successfully merged with the ooze and proved a vital asset in Mr. Grizz's plans. Unfortunately, his plans failed and all of his work and efforts in Alterna were left to rot. Octarians utilized by the plan were left to figure things out on their own and those confident enough stepped up to help take charge.

Ruth was not comfortable taking charge, but she was comfortable researching their new affliction. The ooze they had been exposed to had altered them and they refused to allow it to control them any longer. She wanted to find not a cure, but stability for them and the ooze to allow them to move to the surface and discover lives of their own.

Story

Early Life

Consciousness was a fleeting thing to her - screams, the large form of something otherwordly, swirling colors in her vision. The idea of trying to move never occurred to her, the idea of limbs not even flickering in her mind. Darkness would come back over her and silence would pull her into it's depths.

The experiments continued for months, the grizzly finding that some subjects were more successful at merging with his ooze than others - some would be consumed wholely while others lost all autonomy and became nothing more than fluffballs. The first several successful subjects were Octolings (Inklings were much harder to come by) and the simplest ones at that. When he had success turning them into proper soldiers, the harder, more humanoid Octolings were next on his list.

The line of successes were coded R0 - yes, there had been that many experiments - and only half of the test subjects survived the week. Those that did were near perfect, as perfect as they could be without being mammalian. A beautiful blend of cephalopod and mammal, these Octolings were smart, cunning, strong, and able to utilize the ooze as any cephalopod handled ink. They would do until his plans succeeded.

Alterna

R074 was one of the handful of Octarians who, somehow or someway, ended up in the experimenting claws of Mr. Grizz. She had no recollection of a past or who she may or may not have been before waking up in the lab, struggling to hold her form. She was given her name, R074, and sent for studying purposes to ensure she survived. Survive she did, growing into a more solidified form and eventually finding a compromise with the ooze that infested her body. It hurt at times, struggling to hold her form, and the...resulting fur on her head and elsewhere was oddly uncomfortable at first.

They were trained, not that it was really necessary - they all seemed to have battling ingrained in them. R074, or Ruthenium as her friend's called her, didn't care for the battling aspects, much preferring to stay in the lab. She wanted to aid him, but he mocked the idea, pushing her back out to defend against, well, nothing. He seemed confident he would be interupted and of course, he was right. The explosion of glass as the screen above shattered had everyone to their stations, yet Ruth was disappointed that it was merely a child.

A child lacking fur. This child manuvered through clean ink with an even smaller child at their disposal - no, at their side. While others battled, she couldn't help but observe. What was this child's goal? There were so many invaders into this underground world, what did they want? Grizz was far too busy prepping his launch to reprimand her for slacking off, sending more soldiers out to slow the progress of this group steadily making their way through Alterna, cleaning ooze as they went.

When Grizz launched and left them on the surface, all of her disdain for the other finally took form and made sense to her. They were just pawns in his plan and he truly wished to wipe out all life on the surface just for a desperate attempt at 'bringing back' mammals. It was sad, but all she could feel was something new.

Hate.

After Alterna

Grizz failed - defeated by Octavio, the child, and the smaller child. Those remaining expected punishment, but the group seemed to look at them with pity. Octavio explained they had been his, his soldiers, his people, but in their current state he wasn't sure we could safely return with him to a place called Octo Valley. That was fine, we were happy for the mercy, but did not want another ruler over us - we would figure out a way to stabilize ourselves for the safety of others and make our way to the surface.

The group left, promising aid, and leaders began to step forth from the wreckage of Alterna, ready to guide. Ruth however was quick to take action in starting up research - there was so much Grizz had left for her to dig into. None of them were displeased of their current states, used to it, but they were contagious and dangerous to normal Octolings and Inklings. On their bad days, they could do harm to those around them and none of them wanted such a thing.

She began studying and researching, experimenting to find not a cure, but stability for her and the others left in Alterna. She would find a way for their ooze to be contained and find a way for them to safely move to the surface world that awaited.
