"The Devil works hard, but I work harder."
"The Devil from Down south", "The Devil's Defense", "The Devil of New Bailey". A down-to-earth country man. He's a fine lawyer, although with questionable methods... Angel Rhodes is a recently returning lawyer who works for the Rookie Law Program. He's seen as a controversial figure, as six years prior, he was disbarred for presenting forged evidence, and taking evidence without permission. His southern flair will throw city folk off more often than not, and his warm, yet sharp demeanor only makes it more annoying to have him back in town. He has a terrible reputation, but that isn't stopping him from doing what he does best.

Strap my boots down, girls,
buckle up,
and I'm back in the noose.
It's just like the weather,
so quit complaining brother.
No one lives forever!
Now I know,
there's no one I can trust.
I used to think there was.
PERSONALITY

CLEVER INSIGHTFUL CHARISMATIC
PERSUASIVE INDIVIDUALISTIC OPPORTUNISTIC
ARBITRARY DISCONTENTED SECRETIVE
Angel Rhodes is a clever, quick-witted individual. Beyond his minor slip ups, he is actually very astute and smart; able to find solutions to problems quite quickly and is very adaptable in situations. Rhodes is quite often very opportunistic in that he will jump the gun to get at any chance or opportunity that he sees before him, whether for better or for worse. They’re able to perceive and think things out very clearly, being very insightful and helpful in many situations even beyond logic most of the time. He is a charming character with a warm personality to most, if you can get along with a bit of his whimsy. He’s eccentric and unconventional with his methods and personality. He can seem arbitrary at times as he has his own method to his madness that no one can seem to crack. In that way, most are unable to be able to work well alongside the man, and he is pretty individualistic in his own right.
Rhodes may try to be friendly, but he doesn’t all seem that way, either. There’s always an air of slyness under his charm, and his roughened face doesn’t seem very forthcoming either. He can be very open about his own opinions on others as well– almost blunt in a way, but not in an honest way. He is in fact more secretive than one could think– though it’s more towards their personal life and feelings. They are a little distant and avoid touching their heart which is apparent. Rhodes is secretly very discontent with his life, grabbing hold of any sort of last grasp he had on his younger life in hopes to make up for it.

  • Name is actually supposed to be written and pronounced like “Ángel (ahn-hel)” but he americanized it for simplicity.
  • Mixed Hispanic (Mexican/Irish) with a thick, southern accent. Can speak both English and Spanish (Spanish is his first language, however.)
  • Can barely see out of his right eye– almost blind, can barely open it. If opened, it’s gotten cloudy. Never explains how it happened..
  • Some say he looks younger and is a lot more spiffy compared to his actual age.
  • Often stays overtime at the office to iron out his cases and get everything secretly organized. He works better alone at night in less busy places. The most you’ll hear out of him in that time is him humming to the tune of jazz playing in the background.
  • Has a left dimple. It isn't very prominent unless he smiles widely and it's often mistaken for just a wrinkle.
  • Shaves his face about each week or else he'll develop a beard in no time flat. It isn't very greately shaved though as he for one lets stubble hang around his sideburns and jawline, but also because he shaves with a knife. Not a razor, but his own knife.
  • Is very allergic to bee stings.
  • The color that represents him is Dirty Brown (#b43e1f) but his favorite color is Forest Green.

EARLY YEARS
Born in the southern hot heat of Texas, Angel Rhodes was the second youngest born of four children on a family-owned ranch. His mother and father owned it; specializing in mostly livestock and corn, they raised chickens, cows, and horses. At a young age, Rhodes and his siblings would help out around the ranch when they could. Gathering the chicken eggs, brushing the horse hair, running across the ranch to catch the escaped chickens… It was always tradition to help out on the farm. School wasn’t entirely in their eyes when keeping up the corn was more important, but Rhodes was different from his family. Starting out in education, he found himself being absorbed in the schoolwork that his school had to offer, and he would constantly pick up a book to read. It surprised his parents who didn’t expect him to be the type to do such, especially since he became more of a rowdy guy in his teen years.
UNIVERSITY
But, Rhodes found a way to balance schoolwork and farmwork, and although he was happy to help out his family, that isn’t what he desired to do in life. He and his younger sister, Courtney, felt the same way. They didn’t want to be stuck at the ranch like the others and wanted to go out into the world and pursue something greater. Rhodes had also played sports during his highschool years, getting into football for a couple years granting him an opportunity for a scholarship where fit. Going through the many options, he settled down on a University out near a city called New Bailey. It was far from home, but he felt as if he needed to get away from the heat for a while. His family meant well, and they were all close with one another, but he just couldn’t stay in the same place for the rest of his life. He wanted to get out and do more– hoping to make his family proud in the process. So, he moved up towards the University and started studying for a degree and graduated after four years. That degree he majored in law. It isn’t what many had thought to see him in, but he mainly had considered it at first for it being a well-paying job and a big enough job for his parents to be proud of. But as he continued into his classes, he found out that he was going to be more invested in this than he thought. The ideas of justice aligned with his own, and he found himself developing a passion for it; excited to get into the courtroom. When he graduated the university he was in and obtained his diploma, he immediately started to apply for law offices to become a lawyer in and managed to nail a law office in the heart of New Bailey, beginning his life at law at age 24…
BEFORE DISBARRMENT
  • Angel Rhodes keeps taking deals he can't refuse.

AFTER DISBARRMENT
Rhodes moved back to New Bailey after five years and enrolled into the Rookie Law Program as his disbarment embargo was lifted. He didn’t have much hope, but he didn’t have much else going for him. As customary of disbarment rules, his reinstatement into law was published to the papers and a certain person had gained ahold of that information. Visiting Rhodes at his own home, and assaulting him to discourage him from going into law. Now… he’s just going into law with a broken arm.
PRESENT EVENTS
  • [DECEMBER 2ND, 19XX] – “Turnabout Discovery.” After the trial on December 5th, Angel Rhodes finally gets his cast off, and his broken arm is now healed. Rhodes also inquires Asra Star, the now New Bailey's Museum of Arts and Sciences director/sole curator, about a person named 'Phelps'. This would be Celeste Phelps.
  • [MARCH 3RD, 19XX] One night, and only one shot. Lucky for Angel Rhodes, it was a bullseye. The night of the third, Rhodes ended up mustering his courage to ask one Percy Vanderbilt to come over to have dinner with a lame excuse attached. However it wasn't because Rhodes was going to feel lonely without his daughter, Peanut, home--no, not at all. The real motive behind the dinner was that Rhodes was going to ask out Percy. It didn't fly over well initially, but they soon found themselves being dragged to the hospital to see Percy's sister. Through a heart-to-heart, the pins on their hearts were secured. The rest of the night went better than Rhodes would've expected.
  • [MARCH 17TH, 19XX] – “The Nightingale Ball.” Angel Rhodes and his fellow co-workers at the RLP were invited to the prestigious aristocratic Nightingale Ball by a person that simply went by 'R'. During the ball, he ends up reuniting with an old friend, Doctor Meme Mori, and catching up. Towards the tail-end of their visit, Rhodes and his co-workers were all knocked out and paralyzed by the Reaper. They break free, and go home wary. Rhodes obtains a disturbing letter addressed to his daughter only four days later.
  • [APRIL 4TH, 19XX] – “Fallen From Turnabout.” Angel Rhodes finds himself arrested for the murder of Ian Phelps, a man who he once defended, and is also poisoned at the same time. He then has to face his former 'trusted' colleague, Lucius Busi Nessemann, who has framed him for this murder. Rhodes was ultimately found not guilty by the RLP, but at the end of his trial, he collapsed and was rushed to the hospital. He had acute Thallium (Tl) poisoning and stayed in the hospital for a week and a half to recover.
RELATIONSHIP

KIEU "PEANUT" LEE psuedo-daughter
Mi hija, I'd give the world for her. She's sweet 'n smart, and I know she'll do well on her own. My little detective, can't wait to be workin' with her on the field one day. Maybe I'll find myself bein' ordered 'round by her as the police chief one day, haha.
Peanut is commonly reffered to as Rhodes's daughter, as that is what she's basically always been to him and vice versa. He has known her since she was five years old, and has been taking care of her ever since she was fifteen. She's way taller than him and a detective. They get along just like a father and daughter would, and Rhodes would do anything to make sure she is protected, loved, safe, and cared for.

PERCY VANDERBILT boyfriend
Mi amor, the one who I stubbornly fought for. He put up a good fight, I'll tell ya what. Wouldn't have taken it back for the world, though, 'cause he's the sweetest thing that could be. He makes me feel at home 'n comfortable. He's smart 'n carin', treats my rocky self gently. I'd do anythin' for him and... I think he would do the same for me. If that ain't love, I don't know what is.
Co-workers to lovers. Percy means a lot to Rhodes, and he trusts him more than he knows. He is very grateful for him and is very happy to have him in his life, even if it took a moment to get there. He's able to knock down the walls that Rhodes had never wanted anybody to see, and he couldn't be happier for it. He cares for Percy a lot and he's very aware that his darling feels the same. It's undeniable that they love each other to hell and back.

CELESTE PHELPS friends...?
I respect Celeste a whole deal of a lot. She's been through a lotta hell jus' like me--uhrm. Jus' like a lot of us. I just hope she gets the courage to crawl outta that hole she's in.
Rhodes is something alright. I've known him for a long while, and he's changed a lot. I appreciate that he's tried to help all that he has even from his position. He's stubborn sometimes, but has good intentions.
Rhodes and Celeste have a complicated relationship. They declare they are not friends, but they aren't simply acquaintances, either. The beginning of their relationship had started when Celeste's brother Ian became Rhodes's client. After Rhodes's disbarrment and the disaster that had ensued, Celeste and Rhodes ended up keeping contact with each other. He helped her out at some point and everything had lead to now. They have a lot more in common than they would like to believe.

DR. MEME MORI old friends
A commendable doc. Sucks that the wing she was taken under was a shady one, but think they'll come to their senses soon enough. She does her job well, 'n her companion's cute to boot. Delightful to work with.
He's a good lawyer. I think it's as simple as that. I hope to work with him more in the future. He does seem troubled, though... what happened while he was gone?
The two had once worked together back briefly before Rhodes was disbarred. Rhodes respects Mori and her excellent medical practices as well as her medical examinations. One day he hopes he can convince her to break off from the contract that ties her to the district attorney.

L.B. NESSEMANN arch-nemesis
I don't regret ever working with him, but I regret followin' every last word. It's no secret that I hate him with a passion. For ruinin' my life, for ruinin' countless others. For what? For his own, selfish gain? Bullshit. I refuse to acknowledge that I ever said we held the same ideals in the past. I hope that man gets to rot in a jail cell for what he's done.
He's a funny one, alright. He's like a... like a piece of horseshit at the bottom of your shoe that you just can't scrape off. I'm not fond of him as the next person is--and I'm wholly surprised that that Irina Smolmes let him in that silly program. I know how he is and what he will do for justice. We don't think too differently. All we want is justice for the less-fortunate. Is that so bad?
Nessemann is Rhodes's ex-mentor, ex-boss, ex-co-worker, and arch-nemesis. There isn't a much tense, bitter, hate-filled rivalry than the one that these two share. The story goes that Nessemann took a young lawyer Rhodes under his wing and promised him a promising career. Nessemann ended up becoming the district attorney, but Rhodes wasn't granted the assistant position. Their tension would grow when Nessemann's position as the DA was being threatened by Rhodes's growing lone career, and Nessemann plotted to secure his position for good. A horrible betrayal landed Rhodes without a job and they became sworn enemies after that. They hate each other to the bone, even so much as for Nessemann to plot Rhodes's demise a second time. Rhodes doesn't wish death upon the man, but he wouldn't complain if he croaked.

MANHATTAN LYNN antagonist
A dangerous woman to get involved with. Her nephews are nice though, when they ain't lyin' on the stand for her. Manhattan is respectable, but I sure wouldn't want to have to deal with any case from her again.
Rhodes is amusin', really. He's too soft. I have mad respect for 'em, but he's got some lessons to learn.
Another antagonistic force in Rhodes's life, Manhattan and him don't have the best of relationships. They don't outright despise each other, but Rhodes is wary of her, and Manhattan is an intimidating shadow over him. She has an iron grip on her parts of the city, and Rhodes can only hope to stay out of her way. Lucky for him, she wants him out of her way, too. It is highly suspected by Rhodes that she was the one who poisoned him the night of the fourth. He is doing nothing about this for his own safety.
