Obsidian was created when I wrote a short story for a college assignment. She was originally supposed to be a guy but I found the character so boring I decided to change the gender, which immediately made the character far more interesting.
Her placeholder name was at first "Raven", which I later changed to "Obsidian", as in my eyes as I speak Icelandic, still has a connection to ravens as the Icelandic word for obsidian, "hrafntinna" literally translates to "raven quartz".
