Newt

Newt was born in a tribe of cave-dwelling goblins who make their way in the world by mining for scraps of ore or gemstones. These they sometimes trade with the humans and other folk in the nearby villages and other settlements for meager supplies; the goblins are almost universally despised by everyone who lives in these neighboring villages, but some find it more palatable to trade with the little cretins than to provoke their ire and risk the chance of being raided in the night. When they are running low on supplies, they will not hesitate to raid the villagers anyway.

On one particular raid, the house she broke into had an intriguing looking bag resting on top of an old dresser in the bedroom and decided to take it. On the march back to their cave, she decided to open the bag to see if there was anything inside of it and was surprised to discover a very large and very expensive looking tome, its cover inlaid with gold and jewels. She stashed it in the hollow of a tree to keep it safe. That night, she snuck out to get a better look at it. Under the light of the full moon, she held the book open and marveled at its beautifully decorated and illustrated pages, even though she could not read the words contained within. She was absolutely mesmerized by it.

Almost every night, Newt found herself returning to the tree hollow to stare at The Book, running her tiny fingers over the smooth pages and reveling in its magnificence. But no matter how many raiding parties she went on, there were never any other books that were even remotely as beautiful. But she wanted more. Now that she had the book, no ordinary treasures would suffice. By now she had also discovered that anything else she happened to put in the leather bag she had also stolen would also be swallowed up, no matter its size. And thus, her master plan was hatched.

After dressing herself in the clothes stolen from some unsuspecting child during the last raiding party, Newt left her tribe behind without a word, taking her one and only prized possession - The Book - with her as she set off in the night. Her one and only goal: to steal and hoard as many fancy books as possible.

After several attempts trying to read the book, Newt found that the book could produce a wide variety of spells, some more dangerous than others. She never knew what she was casting, due to her illiteracy. At least twice she was almost killed by the effects of her errant spellcasting, as she was completely unable to completely decipher the contents of The Book. In time it may become a valuable weapon for her, but in the meantime, it is best used sparingly and carefully. Fortunately for her, Newt is fairly adept at avoiding enemies, as her experience with thieving has made her quite nimble.

Notes

  • She may look cute and unassuming, but Newt is sarcastic and will not hesitate to insult anyone she deems unworthy, stupid, or annoying.
  • She is very selfish and puts her needs over the needs of her party. Because she cannot currently control her spellcasting, her party may be caught in the line of fire, but she beleives it's clearly their own fault for not getting out of the way on time.
  • Her party has to force her to bathe regularly; she doesn't mind the water but thinks that soaps and perfumes are disgusting and will avoid them at all costs.
  • She has a bag of holding but will only put her fancy books in it - nothing else is worthy enough. She keeps her gold and her dagger in a smaller pouch she carries around her waist and has no other belongings..
