Coeur

Coeur Saignant  ||  she/her  ||  Jersey Devil

Coeur is a notorious outlaw, wanted for crimes of armed robbery, evasion of justice, and for operating a crime ring. She jumps from town to town, relying on her relentless charms and wits, as well as a dense network of fellow criminals, to keep her a step above local law enforcement. With her charisma and confidence, she's something of a born leader. And if questioned, her loyal followers will usually refuse to give her up.

Coeur was born into privilege, her father was always oversea on trade business (at least that’s what her mother said...) and her mother was an heiress. Her mother was cold and distant, focused on her grand parties, and preferred to nurse a bottle of wine more than her daughter. Her father barely even acknowledged her existence in the short times he visited, and when he did it felt hollow.

It was clear from a young age Coeur was… different. She got in fights alot for the fun of it, tortured bugs and small animals, hung around with local delinquents, and her mother was dreadfully embarrassed by her tomboyish behaviour (and let her know this all the time)

She was put into a private religious highschool for girls, with her mother's hope that it would straighten her out. During this time she found close companionship with an irish chupacabra lass, Joanne, who worked at a local eatery that was a popular hangout. Their friendship slowly became more. They spoke of leaving together, hitting the road out west and building their own lives instead of living the ones planned out by their parents. They were mischief makers, and went on little adventures all the time. But once, after stealing a police man's horse and taking it for a joy ride, they were finally caught. Coeur’s mother had reached the end of her patience, and set her up to go to a juvenile corrections boarding school in Maine. Coeur was devastated, and met Jo in secret one last time, swearing she’d come back for her one day.

As she stood at the station, bags in her hands, she noticed another train was departing that day. One that was taking it’s maiden voyage from her home, Jersey, to northern Illinois, right on the edge of the territories. She made her choice. In the bustling crowd, she slipped away from her mother, and hopped aboard that train.

She spent the next several years learning to survive on her own, and did so very well. She traveled on stolen horses, made money from doing dirty crime jobs, and some minor (turned major) theft. She gained a reputation, and then a following in the form of her own crime gang.  One day, on her way back to Jersey, she came across Joanne in a pub, and they spent a short time together. They reflected on their past, and what they've done since last seeing each other. When it came time for Coeur to skip town, she offered a hand to Jo, wanting her to come with. Jo considered, but declined. While she loves Coeur, they aren't kids anymore, and she couldn't give up her connection to her family to live a chaotic crime life. She tells Coeur that if she’s ever ready to turn her life around, her door is always open. Coeur leaves for the final time, more heartbroken than she thought she’d be, and she's had a hard time with relationships ever since.
