Tinkering
Gilbert is a skilled steam engineer and is well versed in the manufacturing and repair of many different types of technologies. If he doesn't know how something works, or how to build it, he has no qualms about taking it apart to figure it out. It's rare for him to actually break whatever it is he's messing around with. Before his formal apprenticeship, tinkering was how he learned.
Map Making
Throughout his time travelling, Gilbert picked up some map-making skills. He knows how to chart the land and will often map out the areas he travels through, more as a hobby than anything. In relation to this he's very good at keeping his bearings and maneuvering through unfamiliar terrain, so it's almost unheard of for him to lose direction or get lost.
Photography
At the start of his travels Gilbert acquired his first camera and has since made a habit out of photographing the scenery of every place that he passes through, be it towns or desert or forests or anything in between. Because this has become a near-daily indulgance of his, he over time has improved his skills and his photos have taken on a more artistic, less direct quality. Unfortunately he hasn't found a way to make money off of this yet. But he's trying.
