You can't take Rosallegro away from me! It's the only thing I've ever had that Emma can't take or replace!
― Rose Angel, 'Of Spark and Cats'

Rose Angel is a flautist and gardener, and the host of Rosallegro, the envy world.

Appearance

Rose appears to be a wind-up doll. She has dusty purple hair and light pink eyes, and her hair is tied in a bun and covers one eye. Two pieces of hair are left loose. In Rosallegro, she wears a dark purple bonnet with light pink flowers and white lace, a dark purple dress with a deep pink underskirt and light pink trim, and a rose decal on the front. Around her waist there are pink flowers that match the ones on the bonnet. There is a white bow on the back of her dress, and she wears white high heel shoes.

In the human world, the wind-up key is missing. She wears somewhat professional clothing, such as button-up blouses and long skirts. She wears glasses. One outfit consists of a dark purple blouse with the sleeves rolled up, a light pink bow, a dusty purple plain choker, and a long white skirt. A second outfit is a white blouse with dusty purple lace, a light pink rose in her bun, a long dusty purple skirt, white knee-length socks, and a purple choker with a pink rose pendant on it.

Personality

Rose is rather troubled and worried, even when her world corrupts her to feel strong jealousy. Though she hurts those around her, she feels guilt and nervousness about the outcome, and she looks for reassurance that she did the right thing. Outside of her world and removed from its influence, she is more mild-mannered. She develops a friendship with Spark Iskra, and she shows almost too much gratitude towards Spark for helping her, to the point that when Spark returned to Lindaer, Rose blamed those who pushed Spark to leave again for taking the friendship from her. Overall it's never Rose's intention to hurt anyone, although her bitter feelings and hasty actions often result in this happening.

In 'Of Spark and Cats'

Rose first appears being observed by Spark Iskra, who meets with Roselie Gardner washing a wedding veil in a well in her garden. Roselie expresses suspicion towards Spark, who introduces herself as "Catherine Sparks". when Catherine notes that Roselie is washing someone else's blood from her clothing, Roselie reveals that it had been her wedding day, and she was married to a stranger because someone took her fiance. Catherine hypnotizes Roselie to tell her more, and Roselie explains that she was in an arranged marriage to a man named Lyall Greycroft, but her sister Emma Angel objected at the wedding. Roselie had stabbed Emma with her gardening shears out of envy. From this, Catherine deduces that Roselie has a world made out of her envy, and Roselie claims she could feel someone watching her, and goes to that world.

Roselie, now revealed to have been given the name Rose Angel by her world, is revealed to be the host of Rosallegro, the envy world. This world is a dark, spacious world with gears and broken flutes emerging from the ground. Rose demands Spark not to take her world from her, and Spark claims Rose doesn't want a world like Rosallegro. Rose denies this and reveals the other factors that caused the world's creation: Rose entered a science fair with an invention of hers years ago, but Emma cheated at the contest and won, and Emma went on to befriend closely the only other flautist in their hometown, leading Rose to believe Rosallegro is the only thing that Emma can't take from her. Rose makes more flutes erupt from the ground to trap Spark in place, and cuts Spark's face in the process. She is more shocked than Spark is and expresses the idea that Rosallegro can't hurt anyone because it's the perfect world. Conflicted, she flees, but is stopped again when Spark suggests she can have everything Rosallegro could give her in the human world, too. Spark convinces Rose that she cared enough about Rose to find her, so someone must care. Additionally, she reminds Rose that even if she believes Emma has gotten things effortlessly, that doesn't make her unworthy of friends or love. Once again conflicted, Rose releases the flutes pinning Spark. Spark asks whose clothes Rose was washing in the garden, and Rose admits it was her veil, which she used to stop Emma's bleeding having regretted injuring her. Realizing that it was Rosallegro's influence on her that caused her to hurt Emma, Rose admits to Spark that she already misses her sister, and she falls to the ground. Spark wordlessly turns her wind-up key -- a gesture acknowledging Rose in a way she had never felt before -- and Spark reassures her that Rosallegro was trying to protect her even if it went about the wrong way of doing so. She hands Rose a flute left to her by her world, and they return to the human world as Rosallegro disappears forever.

Roselie returns to the human world to overhear Emma talking to Roselie's new husband Graymalkin Gardner. Upon hearing Emma mention she hired another flautist to give Roselie a break when she was sick before a concert, and that Emma joined the inventing competition because she wanted to share Roselie's interests, Roselie realizes that Emma never meant to hurt her. The two hug, and Rose promises never to disapepar in such a way again. Roselie asks Catherine to let her introduce the latter to Emma, and when Catherine declines for a desire to return to her own world, Roselie asks her to visit again soon.

When Roselie is next seen, she is sitting in her and Graymalkin's new house with Lyall Greycroft. She thanks him for visiting despite her having to cancel the housewarming, as by this point Emma has supposedly been in her studio, Catherine has returned to her own world, and Graymalkin retreated to work on something in the basement and told Roselie and Lyall not to go down there. Roselie expresses frustration that Graymalkin has spent more time with Emma than he has his own wife. She takes the flute Rosallegro left for her and throws its head against the wall, angry that she let Rosallegro disappear. She immediately regrets this. Lyall goes to retrieve her flute head, which rolled down the stairs. When Roselie hears a loud noise a while later, she goes downstairs herself to see if he is okay, only to find Lyall unconscious and Graymalkin standing over him. Roselie sees Graymalkin trap Lyall in a glass cat figurine, and horrified, she tried calling Emma. Emma does not pick up and her voicemail is full, so Roselie calls Catherine's and Emma's close friend Miss Flame instead. Roselie meets with Miss Flame outside, and recounts what she saw to the latter. It's at this point Catherine returns after seeing her two friends upset from her world. Catherine mentions that Graymalkin must be using energy from a world that he must have pushed Emma to create. Roselie wants to find Emma, but Catherine and Miss Flame decide to challenge Graymalkin directly, so Roselie goes with their plan. Upon returning to the basement and seeing that Graymalkin has figures to trap herself, Catherine, and Miss Flame's sister Claire in, she runs down the stairs and throws her arms around him to convince him to let them all go safely. Graymalkin responds by trapping her in the glass figure.

When Roselie next appears, it is when Miss Flame, Emma, and Catherine have returned from Emma's world. With everyone out of the figures, Roselie greets them.when Emma gives Catherine a painting made for her, Roselie gives Catherine the glass figure as well. She insists they all have tea when Catherine asks if they were all aware while in the figures -- she seems upset to think of it, and intended to dodge the question, which only confirms that they were. She goes upstairs to prepare tea for Catherine, Emma, Miss Flame, Lyall, and Claire.

World

Rosallegro is a world made of Rose's envy, and as such it not only is made tangible by those feelings, but also heightens them in her. A dark world where the only light pours in from a violin cutout in the ceiling, it is a wasteland of gears and broken instruments. Broken flutes grow up through the ground, and in the far distance a grand piano and electric keyboard also lay in waste. These represent the goals and dreams she feels were taken from her; the instruments represent Emma befriending the only other flautist in town, making Rose feel as if she was being replaced, and the gears represent her losing the science fair inventing competition she entered years prior.

Relationships

Emma Angel

Emma is Rose's older sister. A perfumer with her own shop in the city, as well as an artist taking painting commissions, Emma is very successful. However, Rose has envied Emma significantly, believing Emma gets things effortlessly compared to her, although the truth of this is debatable. Feelings of being replaced by Emma made Rose resentful, although that obscured the strong amount of importance she therefore placed on having Emma's validation. Although Rose injured Emma when Emma's objection cancelled Rose's wedding, Emma didn't mean harm; she didn't think Rose would be truly happy in an arranged marriage to Emma's childhood friend. Rose's guilt and wishes to reverse the damage she caused allowed her true feelings of valuing Emma to arise, and Emma's worry over Rose's disappearance allowed her to realize she had pushed Rose away in her attempts to be kind to her sister. While there was some tension over Emma disliking Catherine because of lies Graymalkin told her and Rose feeling Emma ruined her friendship with Catherine by driving her away, the two no longer hold hard feelings toward each other.

Spark Iskra

Spark is the one who found Rose after her wedding. While Rose initially was angry and worrisome at Spark's presence, Spark's help in Rosallegro caused Rose to see Spark as a very close friend. Spark also regards Rose kindly, although she is hesitant to accept Rose's warm welcome in case her own world, one of isolation, falls apart from the new feelings of connection.

Graymalkin Gardner

Graymalkin Gardner is Rose's new husband. While she married him so the wedding wouldn't go to waste, this likely was so he could manipulate those closest to her. She is frustrated that he doesn't spend time with her, and he feels she is easier to love when she is a glass figure.

Lyall Greycroft

Lyall is the man Rose was supposed to marry. They are close friends after the wedding was called off. Lyall seems somewhat confused by the complexity of Rose's situation, but he is supportive nonetheless.

Miss Flame

Miss Flame is a close friend of Emma and Spark. Rose becomes close with her when they team up to stop Graymalkin from turning anyone else into glass figures.

Trivia

  • When Rose was designed in 2010, her original design was a purple tabby cat with pink stripes. This design reappears as Emma Angel's painting of her in 'Of Spark and Cats', and as the glass figure she is trapped in by Graymalkin.
  • Rose is the second character to appear in the manga.
  • Angel is Roselie's maiden name. While she considers the name Rose Angel to be one granted by her world, others already called her Rose, so Rose Angel was also her name before her marriage. After becoming a widow with the shattering of the glass figure Emma trapped Graymalkin in while in Arcathedral and Linara, it is unknown whether Rose intends to keep using Gardner as her surname or go back to using Angel.
