Artemis

Initially, Artemis is Ilya's experiment and assistant. Cat creature, barely speaks (selectively mute), combative and fiercely independent despite having few desires and a weak sense of self. Artemis is apathetic and lacks a strong sense of self. It is highly reactive to perceived threats, and unafraid of consequences for its actions. It obeys Ilya because it has never known anything else. Ilya hires it out for sex work initially (it doesn’t care very much), but stops after it kills a rich mob member who tried to hurt it during sex. After that, Ilya keeps it at home most of the time as a surgical assistant. He sometimes lets it out to perform assassinations he's hired for. However, since Artemis doesn't care enough to be tidy about killing, those assassinations are by necessity showy affairs, or else require cleanup afterwards by Ilya.

Eventually runs away, gets caught by a rich human who hunts magical creatures for sport. It is set loose in an enclosed range, and hunted. It accepts a deal to be turned into a demon when it ends up on the verge of death after being torn up by dogs and shot, hunts the hunter, takes the dogs, and lives on as a hunting demon
