Ann is the main character in books 1~3 where it tells the story of how corrupt the Heavens is, how the Sins exact revenge on them, and how her life goes through the war.
Ann was an experimental child. Her biological mother went to Past, someone who is widely known for failed experiments and being in prison multiple times, and begged for her help as she wanted her own child. Ann and her twin, Elizabeth, were born eventually after the mother received help.
Unfortunately, it was a great sin to commit on how they accomplished this. The goddess-in-training, Ann’s mother, was then punished by the Sins for committing a crime. (it’s explained better in the books) Greed unalives the mother since her crime, her sin, came from greed.
Fast forward the opening scene, Elizabeth is taken by the Sins while Ann is taken by Delilah and Arondal. They’re separated and don’t learn about each other until they’re much older. Because of this, Ann was a cursed child in the eyes of the Heavens- hence why she has gray hair. It indicates she’s cursed. Just like how white hair means you’re either sick or a Spirit.
Enzo, the leader of the Heavens and speaker for the Divines, placed great expectations on Ann just for her to live among the Gods. She would go through her entire life trying to impress her elders out of fear. While she is grateful Delilah adopted her and raised her, a part of Ann didn’t want to be in a place that seemed holy to others but was terrifying on the inside.
She kept that secret with her up until the day she was kicked out after a very unfortunate and terrible tragedy. Which left Ann to fend for herself on the Surface, where the mortals were and where new dangers faced her. Someone who had been watching her journey from afar offered Ann to come stay with her after a few days. That person was Waste, the queen of the spirit realm. There she would meet a couple of new faces, including Shinra who would be the prince.
While there, she learns that during her time on the Surface, the heavens was crashed and burned by the Sins - mainly Pride. She would then make it her mission to try and stop the situation from worsening - even if the heavens didn’t deserve her help for all the trouble they caused her.
She doesn’t show up much after the third book. But I know somewhere in this universe she is thriving after her journey. Maybe she’ll come back for the rebellion of the second war.
