After a while spent entertaining the King as the foreign curiosity, Sabien had learned Orlan almost fluently and knew the ways and secrets of the court. When the dictator King's health began to crumble even further, he stepped in to whisper in his ear; he became the King's sole friend and confidant.
He was thus granted noble status and allowed to take part in the sejm (parliament-like structure consisting of upper nobility). Orlan aristocracy detested this at first, but Sabien gradually won them over with his intelligence and wit, and took other, more bloody paths where necessary. His official position was still simply as the King's advisor, so he didn't have much sway in terms of politics, but his opinions and thoughts grew to be quite valued even if he wasn't really respected as a person.
An opportunity arose in the shape of Marlene Savyańska, who didn't know anything about Sabien except that he was tall, dark and handsome - and who was very much interested in finding out more. Marlene was well-liked, or at least well-known, and she was stupid; so even though Sabien was very reluctant at first, he knew he could use her to legitimize his status and hide his more "feminine" side and sexuality. Aside from this, he dressed and behaved in a purposely more masculine way, and compared to current-day Sabien, he was nearly unrecognisable.
