Summary

🌌  Perceptive, courteous, gullible  🌌

A sprightly, bright, yet naïve young space navigator, who doesn't mind being a hologram too much.

Appearance

Kinsley is a young man of average height and weight. He has pale peach skin and kind olive-green eyes. He has a thin, triangular nose, and rather large round ears. He has light brown hair cut in a close Ivy League style, with a short, curly fringe in the middle of his head. He is a hologram, made up of light, denoted by the blue "H" on his forehead. His light-bee runs a soft-light projection and therefore Kinsley cannot touch or interfere with any physical objects. Onboard the RV Zephyr, Kinsley wears the standard beige JMC uniform, being a buttoned shirt with occupational patches, a square-end tie, utility trousers, and black calf-length boots. Later, after adjusting to life as a hologram and becoming acquainted with Smudge, he wears a more stylish uniform, consisting of a shiny trim blue tunic, a black polo-neck, black slim trousers and calf-length boots. Under the tunic he has a toolbelt to carry various bits and bobs. He is 5'9".

Personality

Kinsley is a real optimistic type, who manages to stay chipper and bright no matter what. His upbeat nature oftens gets him in situations where he thinks he can bite off more than he can chew, and is pretty well-known to make mistakes for this reason. He's adaptable and likes being assigned work to do. He's extremely book-smart, is a science/maths whiz, and likes thinking up theoretical physics problems for fun. Loves problem-solving and finds great joy and satisfaction in figuring things out. Despite his intelligence, he's not cocky or snarky, but likes being appreciated and acknowledged for his knowledge and experience. He's also kind of gullible, and definitely not the most socially aware. He always wants to get along with people but isn't great at making friends. Very talkative around those he gets along with. He gets frightened easily, but doesn't like to show that he's scared.

Story

Kinsley's story takes place somewhere out in deep space in the far future. A hologrammatic projection of his self pre-death, the young navigator is committed to finding his way back to his home planet.

Phil Kinsley was born on Callisto, the furthest moon from Jupiter, on June 17, 2163. The Kinsley family were upper middle-class, having emigrated to Callisto from Earth decades back. His father was an astro-mechanic, and his mother was a university professor. Phil was an only child. His great-grandparents were from middle-class families in Dorset, with his great-grandfather being an Astro-Navigator himself. The Kinsley family settled in the flashy new colony that had recently been terraformed on Callisto, and have been "mainstays" on the moon ever since. The family tree is known to have ties to astro-mechanics in some form.

Kinsley had a relatively uneventful childhood, spending much of his time studying and learning. He was an excellent student. He knew from an early age that he wanted to go into a job involving maths and sciences, and loved the idea of space travel. His father encouraged him to look into space navigation, which Kinsley wholeheartedly embraced.

After his graduation, Kinsley passed his exams with flying colours. He was highly commended for his knowledge and slowly made his way up the rungs, eventually landing a spot in the Jupiter Mining Corps' services. He was recruited into a low-level ship, the RV Zephyr, a small Callistoan research vessel under the JMC. Kinsley was elated to be of any service- as well as getting to see the universe outside Callisto.

Kinsley was a dedicated navigator onboard RV Zephyr. Kinsley had only recently been promoted to Junior Astro-Navigation Officer by that point. The ship's crew was mostly made up of trainees, on a rather trivial, supposedly risk-free mission on the outskirts of a quadrant near Callisto, searching for viable asteroids and small planets fit to analyse for resources.

An accident happened on board the Zephyr, causing Kinsley's sudden death. A technician managed to get the ship's computer to run Kinsley as a hologram using an onboard light-bee, in hopes that he help could navigate the ship back to Callisto. Unfortunately, Kinsley, only being a junior navigator, didn't yet know the scope of the computer. The Zephyr was losing power quickly and resources thinned. On Kinsley's insistence, all the surviving crew took escape pods routed to Callisto, with Kinsley's hologram staying on board in hopes that he would eventually figure out the system, and guide the ship back to meet his friends and have the ship's bodies laid to rest.

Kinsley could only get the computer running to half capacity after such damage was sustained. The Zephyr was headed toward Callisto, but it would take ages to get there. A couple of years went by. Kinsley eventually shut his own light-bee down in order to conserve power, and keep himself from going mad being stranded on his own.

Centuries passed. Far into the future, Kinsley's light-bee was suddenly reinstituted when the computer was rebooted by a sudden new presence, being a felis sapiens named Smudge, who was pilfering the drifting ship's resources for his own use. Kinsley was thrilled to have someone to talk to again, and has been trying to make friends with the stranger ever since.

Smudge

Kinsley meets Smudge after decades of his light-bee being deactivated, and immediately wants to gain his trust and friendship. The two get along fine, but Kinsley seems to care more for his companion than the adverse. Kinsley doesn't usually catch onto Smudge's snarky, sarcastic comments. He also asks a lot of questions about Smudge's history, religion, and upbringing, much to his companion's chagrin.

Trivia

  • His zodiac sign is Gemini, and his lunar zodiac sign is Water Pig.
  • His faceclaim is (x), and his voiceclaim is (x). (He would have a middle-class Southern British accent, with a medium pitch, well-pronounced, a newscaster type of voice)
  • Red Dwarf OC! He's designed with the Red Dwarf TTRPG character rules in mind. I'm not actually sure if his timeline intersects with the show yet, it's probably at a similar-ish time though?
  • The RV Zephyr is a medium sized ship, about a quarter of the size of the Red Dwarf.
