About.

Rivergarden is, at his core, a problem solver. He has a fantastic ability to think on his paws and quickly intact plans, something odd to witness from the typically bumbling and socially clumsy cat. They have an eye for detail, and are often knowledgeable and hyper-aware about their surroundings. Nothing gets past the watchful gaze of this mini-sleuth, who excels at hunting and scouting thanks to his skillset. One of Rivergarden’s most notable qualities is their genuine, unwavering adoration for the cats in their life; they wear their heart on their– slightly unreadable– sleeve, and make sure the others in their life are aware of this.

Rivergarden, despite his young age, is known for his serious personality. It’s rare to see them stray off the path they have carefully moulded for themselves, and even rarer to see them goof off in serious or important situations. For most cats his age, it’s difficult to see him as anything else than a spoilsport. Any cat that has had the chance to speak to Rivergarden knows one thing: this little cat is beyond stubborn, never one to drop something that has grabbed his attention. To the things he is interested in, he is as dedicated as the most loyal warrior— even if the subject of his interests seems unusual for the average cat. An unfortunate side effect that comes with growing into one’s skin, but Rivergarden is often self-critical of himself to a destructive, toxic degree. It’s rare to hear him talk positively about himself, and even rarer for him to mean anything he does say.

Despite Rivergarden’s best attempts— and, really, he does try!— he isn’t the type of cat to ‘click’ very well with others quickly. Be it his awkward way of speaking or his strange mannerisms, it can be hard for others to grow fond of this little cat without him putting in the proper effort. It’s rare to see this side of Rivergarden, something they keep buried far, far beneath the surface, but in circumstances— often when they are faced with serious battles— they become slightly (just slightly!) unhinged, often seeming more feral than normal. Even this tiny apprentice can seem intimidating— albeit unintentionally, and in the worst way— sometimes! A classic overthinker, it isn’t uncommon to see Rivergarden completely spiralling into his own thoughts. He tends to replay moments and conversations in his head on loop, and is easily fixated on things others find mundane or typical.

✧ First Face : The World.

How does your character behave generally? What do they do if the world has a camera on them?

To the world, Rivergarden is easy to understand: just an abnormal young cat with a keen eye and a strange sense of humour. To most, there isn’t any need to dig any deeper than that; especially not when there’s other cats who are much easier to communicate with.

✧ Second Face: Close ones.

How does your character behave in front of friends and family? Anything different? Are they more affectionate or a plain asshole?

Rivergarden’s family and friends are more privy to the sensitive side of the cat; the side that longs for love and friendship, the side that just wants to be a kid. He is far more encouraging of cats he’s close to accompanying him on his adventures and exploits, moves away from his uptight demeanour.

✧ Third Face: True Reflection.

How does your character behave by themselves? What is thought from the depths of their hearts, reserved for themselves alone and has never been mentioned in front of anybody?

At the depths of Rivergarden’s heart, he is nothing but a scared kid. He works– tirelessly and endlessly– not just for those around them, but for the chance of love and acceptance, for his craving for a stable environment where others will treat him like a real cat and not just another passing figure in the shadows. He digs and he digs, no matter the consequence, no matter the damage it does to him, so he doesn’t have to stop for a moment, lest he dwell on the fact that his dad is never coming home.

"If you insist..."

01. What's the lie you say most often?

“I don’t like to lie.”

Rivergarden’s beliefs are based around the truth. He does not like to lie, no matter what.

02. What do you notice first in the reflection versus what most others first notice looking at you?

"I think what I notice first is-- my eyes. They always look so tired. I’m. . . not sure I want to know what others see."

Rivergarden is overly critical of their own appearance, even if they don’t talk about it much. They don’t like their fangs, pointed and strange looking, or scars on their paws, a reminder of mistakes in the past. Compliments given by others usually bounce off of him.

03. If you were suddenly challenged, would you rather run away or stay and fight?

“I’d stay and fight– that’s actually– hah– that’s definitely a problem of mine. I’m not really the type to quit.”

Rivergarden doesn’t back down from a fight, and it’s his worst issue. As much as it is an issue, however, they do fight very well when they are able to act in a support role to others in battle.

04. Are you proud of who you are?

"I am proud of what I do. I think I do good, at least for others."

Rivergarden is happy with his duty to others. He is proud of what he can do for the ones he loves. He is not proud of his own personality, though— they wish they could be so much more, and do so much better for those around them.

05. Are you afraid of death?

". . ."

He's terrified.

06. What does a perfect world look like to you?

"A world where my dad is still alive, and my mom doesn’t look so tired all the time and— a world where I don’t have to work to stay alive."

They just want to be happy.

07. What do you see in an ideal partner/s (romantic or platonic)?

"A. . . partner?"

Despite being aromantic, Rivergarden isn't against the idea of romance. He just doesn’t know how to approach it. For a partner, they would most like someone they could consider a friend first. His boundaries for a romantic partner would be wildly different than it would for the average cat, acting more as a QPR partner instead.

Summary.
the story at a glance.

  • Shiver and Peak meet in the City. Shiver is a City girl, having grown up there. Peak— formerly Peakspring of RockClan— is a defector of the Clans. He’s uncertain of his place in the City and tends to roam with the wrong type of cats, but finds solace in Shiver’s welcoming presence. After moons of dancing around eachother, the two decide to become mates.
  • They have a single kit, who Peak insists on naming River after Shiver. He’s so tiny, and it’s a surprise he even survives. Peak and Shiver dote on the young kit endlessly, who takes on much of his father’s confidence and his mother’s resilience.
  • Peak works to provide for the tiny family, including getting himself into not-so-good situations. It terrifies Shiver, who insists that he stay safe. He doesn’t. For aforementioned shady behaviour, Peak is murdered by an unknown assailant. Shiver takes River and runs, fearful for her and her son’s lives. She doesn’t tell her son about his cause of death, only telling him that he died protecting the family.
  • Shiver and River travel around for a moon or so before finding themselves at the Clans’ territories. They are brought before StreamClan’s leader, Quillstar, who welcomes the pair with open arms despite the trouble caused by rogues in the past. Shiver keeps her name but encourages River to take the -paw suffix, much to his dismay. Not wanting to disappoint, though, he takes it.

Chapter Zero.
Ear for Deceit.

Rivergarden’s story begins not in the City, but in the lands beyond it– in RockClan’s territory.

Peakspring was a young, active warrior. To his Clanmates, he was viewed as nothing but a dedicated tom, willing to do whatever it takes to take care of his Clan. Inside, resentment for the system that the Clans built themselves on had been quietly stewing underneath his pelt. He had seen so much during his time– from the trials of the most deplorable that the Clans had to offer, to sickness plaguing his Clan, to others departing from the Clan to forge their own path.

So, underneath the cover of darkness, he flees RockClan.

Peakspring– now just going by Peak, as to not be associated with the Clans– arrives in the City a month after abandoning his Clan, cold and hungry, bearing new scars and wounds. His encounters were mostly unfriendly, most of which harm him rather than help him. To survive, he puts his skills in combat to good use, doing odd jobs for the cats around the City, ranging from theft to the ocasional hit. One night, tucked underneath the table of a café, he contemplated returning back to RockClan, fur hot with shame and disappointment. That was, until someone revealed themselves.

“Are you alright down there?”

And, before he could respond, the same voice spoke again.

“You look like dogshit. Have you been sitting in the cold like this?”

As the voice revealed herself, he was awestruck– there, standing before him, was a tall, skinny cat, fur copper, almost gold in colour. She introduced herself as Shiver, a former housecat turned street cat. After a few moments more of teasing his appearance, she fetched some fresh food and clean water for him-- and, for the first time since entering the City, Peak was treated with kindness.

After that day, the pair were inseparable. Peak taught Shiver the battle moves from his home, and Shiver taught him how to traverse the difficult terrain of the City. Despite that, the pair never confirmed themselves as mates, dancing around each other with bashful smiles and tender actions.

“I think we should stay together. Forever, I mean.”

Shiver says, one day.

“Are you are I don't look too much like dogshit?”

Peak says back, with a smile on his face. Shiver just cuffs him over the ears gently, shaking her head.

“I'll stay with you through looking like shit 'n not looking like shit, I promise.”

Chapter One.
Eye for Detail.

River was born to Peak and Shiver on a cold day. He’s tiny in Shiver’s paws, and is just barely hanging on for survival. The other kits in the litter were either stillborn or died not long after birth, to the absolute heartbreak of Peak and Shiver. Brushing his newest kit’s fur, Peak insisted the little kit be named after his mother, and the pair called him River. Despite his tiny size, as soon as he could walk, River was unstoppable– always bouncing around, full of life and energy, not allowing a single cat to tell him what to do, or change his mind once it was made up.

“He’s got your confidence. I don’t think anyone will be able to stop him.”

Peak says, grumbling like he was annoyed. (he wasn’t, of course, but shiver already knew that.)

“Oh, he’ll be tearing up the streets soon enough, following whatever moronic job you’ve gotten yourself roped into.”

Shiver says back, but this time, her eyes are narrowed, a quiet beg for Peak to reside himself to a safer, more mundane life.

He doesn’t, of course, but it was a nice attempt.

Peak’s ‘jobs’ continue, leading him down darker and more dangerous paths— and, though he would never tell either of them, he spilled more blood than he cared to admit, he did more harm than good. The jobs kept others off of his tail, though, and kept his family safe.

That was, until it stopped keeping his family safe.

Maybe he tread into the wrong territory, made a deal with the wrong cat, but Peak vanished one morning, leaving Shiver concerned. She left River with a friend of hers— a travelling molly who vowed to take care of the then three month old kitten until Peak could be located. She investigated the areas he hung around until the dead of night when, underneath the light of the moon, she discovered his desecrated corpse, covered with deep scars he never had in life, and organs spilled onto the concrete.

Shiver had no time to grieve for her fallen love.

“Fuck, she shouldn’t— don’t let her get away!”

A voice called behind her and, without a second thought, she turned tail and ran— though, not without grabbing the small tooth necklace that he hung around his neck, the only piece of her mate she would ever see again.

Shiver ran as fast as she could, avoiding her pursuers by diving through the city’s alleyways. She didn’t stop running until she had reached her son and, with the aid of the molly she had left River in the care of, she escaped from the City, leaving behind everything she had ever known.

Chapter Two.
Eye for Weakness.

Shiver didn’t stop running, with the now four month old River, until they reached a caravan site. Neither River nor Shiver liked it here, but it was good enough— for now.

River, diligent as always and grieving the death of their father, held onto the tooth necklace and didn’t let it leave his sight, hanging it around his neck whenever he had to do something that required the use of his paws or his full attention. Shiver didn’t speak of what she saw, but the haunted expression that now commonly donned his mother’s face told him everything he needed to know.

Still, though, something angry simmered underneath his pelt, something that demanded justice for the slaying, something that demanded revenge. He doesn’t bring it up to his mother, and she doesn’t egg on the anger, not when that kind of recklessness is what got Peak killed in the first place.

River and Shiver leave the caravan site not long after River turned six months old, growing tired of the human population that lived there and longing for something new. It takes just a few more days of travel to reach a lake— a beautiful, new sight for the pair, where they encountered an older tom.

“Most rogues aren’t usually bold enough to trample into the Clans’ territories like this, especially not the non-violent ones like yourself. In time like these, the cats of my Clan would most certainly have regarded you with hostility. Perhaps it is lucky that you happened to run into me.”

The gray tom— who calls himself Quillstar says, without a smidge of hostility. He sits down beside the pair and, though their guards are high, they relax when the tom shows himself to not be a threat to their safety.

“So, what is your story?”

The conversation ends with Quillstar— the leader of the Clan that owned the territory they had invaded— extending an invitation to join the Clan— StreamClan. River would be a liar if he said he wasn’t concerned with the whole idea, especially not with how smoothly the conversation went. However, Shiver encouraged him to join the Clan, seeing it as a way for her son to make new friends and finally have a normal life– and for her to hide from whatever desperately wanted her dead.

River doesn’t care to remember his first day in the camp— and especially not the eyes that seemed to stare daggers into his back— but he didn’t turn tail and run, not when his mother had done so much to get him here. He took his new name— Riverpaw, and took residence in the apprentices’ den alongside his new denmates. Though awkward, he tries his best to befriend his new denmates– with minimal success.

(and, if they see him at the new makeshift grave he made for his father by the beachshore, with his tooth necklate tucked between eroded ocean rocks, a spot for him to grieve in peace, they don’t say a word.)

to be continued.
