Hartley started her own mercenary business as a young woman, hardened by the Commonwealth. Over time she has recruited other members, and has dedicated herself to protecting the outcasts and unusual - for a price, of course.

Hartley was born in a settlement near Boston airport, and grew up with very little. She could have had a little sister, but Niamh died only six months after she was born due to an unknown illness. It put stress on her already crumbling relationship with her parents, and she grew up often thinking they wanted Niamh more than her.

Hartley set out at her own at 18, and by 21 she had started up her own mercenary service in Goodneighbour. This was how she met Atlas; paid to kill him and his super mutant clan, Hartley quickly realised he was (mostly) harmless. The two of them joined forces and eventually moved to Croup Manor, where the merc business continued to expand.
It was years before Hartley confessed her romantic feelings for Atlas, but she eventually did and the two started an on/off romance.
