This has major spoilers for the fic/some parts that haven't been revealed in the fic!
White Coat Overview: In episode 1 of The Owl House, Luz gets taken by the Emperor's Coven instead of meeting Eda when she first arrives in the Boiling Isles. Amity was also in the coven under the guise of Lilith for a couple of years since the start of the AU. Amity convinces Lilith to let Luz try to become an Emperor Coven member under her watch because she didn't want her to be thrown to the Isles and possibly get killed. Amity and Luz become friends and Luz is allowed in the coven after using glyph magic. She is granted a staff and Amity is given palistrom wood. The fic spends time delving into them being in the coven, Amity making her staff, Luz learning about hers(and the demon inside it), as well as some of the other characters like Gus, Willow, Belos, etc.
Staff of Energy/Light(image 1-4)-
The staff is a piece of junk on its own, but with Luminous inside it grants power. It can give the user electrical powers and the ability to sap energy from living or non living things. It can do a bit of normal magic, but it's main power is energy based. The staff has had many weilders in the past, and all who use it allow Luminous into their minds.
Luz(image 3+4)-
Just like the original series, but she is now in the Emperor's Coven. She painted her mask to look different from the other guards(and there's a light glyph etched in but she had to paint over it so Belos didn't know, it can still be used). Her staff gives her electrical powers that can zap out or through things. She can also sap energy from creatures. The staff drains her energy each time she uses it. She's more willing to do what is "necessary" for her to get home or to get her wish of being a witch. She hates Eda for being the reason she was trapped there in the first place and wants to take her in to get the portal.
Feels somewhat restrained by Amity at times due to her overprotectiveness. She loves her but it gets a bit much especially when she keeps Luminous a secret(the staff is known and what it does but Luminous is not revealed to Amity for a long time). This secrecy tests their relationship.
She likes to bonk people in the head with her staff as well as use it.
Amity(image 5)-
A couple of years before the AU events, she was seen as a valuable asset to the Emperor's Coven. Lilith took on the role of mentor for her and the coven pulled her out of school to pursue the coven's path. She doesn't see her parents anymore, except once a year or so when they show off their new inventions to Belos or when she sneaks home to hang with her dad(her mom thinks she isn't allowed to visit bc she never sees her). She finds time to be with Ed and Em too, as well as Willow and Gus. Most of her time is spent in the coven on missions.
She's like her s2 self, but more focused on the task at hand. Because of being recognized early, she never had to break ties with Willow and didn't become cold. Feels responsible for Luz and gets overprotective and worried about her, especially regarding the staff.
Luminous(image 1+2)-
Luminous is a witchlike demon(currently). His body is pure energy.
He’s trapped inside a staff(full staff shown in 3rd pic), and can grant users his abilities like a normal staff.
He appears to his users in their mindscape, which is a black void with only them and him. In this scape he appears with light lineart, as shown in ref 2. All objects are white lined and uncolored.
He is a curse and was put into the staff by Belos.
Luz is his current wielder, he manipulates her with promise of her witch dreams coming true. He was granted to her by Belos(who is using Luz as one of many ways to experiment with curses).
He wishes to be free, and on the outside appears evil and manipulative, but hes been severely traumatized and wants revenge for what was done to him, hes running on fumes now, just doing whatever it takes to be freed
DESIGN NOTES: he’s bug like, can be drawn with black or lighter line art, his “horns” do not come out like horns and they face each other like in the ref, he has white pupils see ref 4 for this, he doesnt have a nose, long limbs, big hands, the orbs in his torso move, nub feet like a bug, only furred in certain areas(sharp fur), he's very tall and towers over luz a little
BEAST DESIGN NOTES: I don't have his design down yet but (i need to add a new concept design) i'm thinking it's basically like that but like better, same exact pallete, same head without ears, more beastlike face, and just feral beastly design, slim and lanky beast with the power of light and his back legs i kinda want to be very similar to his witch form's legs, form concept added to images
FINAL FORMS DESIGN NOTES: The amalgamation is mostly bug like but has aspects of the different staff weilders' souls within it, a bunch of eyes and mouths all over, giant, twisted and long, concept image added, might have a bug bottom half similar to mammon from helluva boss
Powers: electricity/lightning based powers, energy absorption (all forms of energy), zapping himself into the ground for fast travel like a lightning bolt, able to grant users of his staff his power, possession (of users through his staff)
when users use the staff, their souls are connected, and once they die, luminous absorbs them, which is the reason he changed appearance
The souls are trapped inside him and with him eternally

Backstory:
He used to be a light beast and was captured by the collectors and turned into a scroll
if he was used on someone like normal in scroll form, they would have turned into a beast like the owl beast
belos found him when he got the collector, he needed a staff and wanted to kill the witches, so collector helped him find luminous’ scroll and make a staff from him, he used him but was able to survive luminous’ energy sapping bc of his own curse, belos decided to use him on others as a way to tame the beast for 20-30 years, this is where the draining spell begins, he used him on randoms, those in the coven, and even several golden guards
Luminous transformed as each user used him and died, becoming more witchlike and gained the ability to speak, now he can give stable powers when people use his staff
At first luminous was a beast so he killed everyone who used the staff, but as he changed he became aware of what was happening and tried to ask for help, this got the users killed by belos when theyd try to help him or do what he said in order to free him, as he became more witchlike he became so upset about losing himself and became mpre frustrated, he realized the only way to be free was to take it, so he began manipulating his users, this still got them killed by him accidentally taking too much energy at once or by belos,
belos locked him away for 20-30 years once he realized he was too unstable and couldnt truly be used for the draining spell, he moves on to basilisks to finish the spell, luminous became insane and hyper manipulative bc of this loneliness
Once he becomes luz’s staff he knows its his last chance as the last 2 times he was so close to actually contoling his hosts so he plays it slow to make her his vessel for freedom
Willow-
Since Amity never stopped being friends with her or bullied her, Willow became more confident, especially since Amity taught her and Gus some spells she learned in the coven. Willow went into the plant track and became the most powerful witch in Hexside. Boscha deeply respects her and the school sees her and Gus as icons who will go on to become coven leaders some day. She hasn't been approached by the coven heads yet, but they're watching. Willow misses Amity a lot, considering she doesn't see her too often now, but they're still on really good terms. She's not as skeptical on the covens as Gus is and tells him he's being paranoid. She's blinded by her potential.
Gus-
Willow's confidence rubbed off on him and he too embraced his true magic potential. He's the 2nd strongest witch at Hexside and still runs the human club, even sectioning it off into different schools. He's insanely perceptive, but it gets to a point where he doesn't trust many people as he can see their intentions more clearly than most. Due to him being involved with illusions so much, he can see right through someone's tricks. He's friends with Amity, but not as much as Willow. Gus doesn't trust the coven systems at all but keeps his mouth shut because it means a lot to Willow and Amity. Soon he'll expose it.
Belos-
Same bitch different universe. The only difference is that he experiments with curse magic with help from Collector. He's mainly focused on one; the staff. SPOILERS FOR THE FIC that haven't been revealed: He found the curse at the night market and wanted to experiment with its effects on creatures. Collector helped him learn a bit on how the curse worked and helped him create a staff that could harness its power without completely destroying the users body and mind. It partially worked, but it was enough. He used it on many creatures before, and they all perished gruesomely.
Belos talks more to the Collector in this AU, even bringing him with him through the castle sometimes because he wants to discuss the staff's usage and have the Collector watch what happens in case of a mishap he needs advice on. He still has his plan, and the staff was part of a failed attempt of the draining spell.
Collector-
Again, same bitch, but SPOILERS FOR NOT REVEALED FIC STUFF: he grows attached to Luz as he watches her progress. At first he likes toying with witches with the staff and watching them die, but with Luz he feels a connection. There are a few times he overhears or sees her vulnerable and he understands her anguish a lot of the times. Feeling trapped and misunderstood when all they want to do is have fun. He feels sorry for what he was apart of and doesn't want her to perish like the others did.
