When it's time for apprentice-aged to be sent into their final domain, their appearance, aptitude, and desired domain are taken into account, especially as the domains' leaders would gather and have a discussion. Many don't wish to leave their home domain, but it something that's understood to be done and honored. (Only a few may stay with their domain.) This is to encourage new bloodlines as well as to ensure the survival of domains. Especially since they've found that certain cats have coats + colors and/or skills that may benefit a different domain.

Greyrock Domain, being the domain to live in the most severe and harshest conditions especially benefits from this. Chosen cats are often large and fluffy with gray tones in order to blend with the rockface. Skills looked for are balance, agility, and hardiness. Do they have arranged prospective partners? (Greyrock Domain leans more into familial dynamics and instead of having dens for roles, there are smaller caves that partners and families will live in.)

Owlthorn is a special case, as he's a brown color that would be better at blending in with the pines of Tallpine Domain. Could be because he befriended (and had the biggest crush on) Beetlestone (Beetlepaw at the time) and heard he was going to Greyrock Domain, and tried very hard to get into Greyrock Domain as well.

(Owlthorn didn't know about the prospective partner thing and supposedly he's arranged to Sablestone instead. Sablestone tries to get to know Owlthorn and likes him well enough, but knows that her brother has his heart instead. They're both slightly accepting that they'll most likely be denmates, if not partners, but luckily for Owlthorn...something happens.)
