About

Margaux Chartreuse is the Queen of Perignon and also the owner of the Royal Casino.

At a first glance, she’s a distant and intimidating woman: she doesn’t speak very much but when she does she always uses few and concise phrases. Her body language tends to give an impression of a person who constantly judges whoever speaks to her. This, combined with her massive stature and her unique clothing style succeed to place herself at a distance, thus affirming her superiority to her subjects, who, for a strange effect, venerate her like a goddess.

While she does actually enjoy this kind of attention and gladly looks at the statues representing herself, Margaux’s personality is slightly more laid back than she exhibits. Her patrimony is immeasurable and according to her counselor, Dom, only 0,1% of her money is enough to buy a piece of land as big as Sarasaland.

While most of her actions are motivated by the preservation of her public image, she shows to be a very capable ruler, especially for economical matters and since she was on the throne she actually increased the kingdom’s already massive income.

She also slightly improved her reign’s infrastructures, financing the local re-creative structures and schools, to her subjects’ approval.

Like all Perignonnes, Margaux loves to live a lavish lifestyle, full of exciting activities: so it’s common to see her doing golf, kitesurfing or at the theater, both as a spectator and as an amateur flute player. She possesses a collection of vintage karts and motorbikes which she uses to go around Perignon.

If she’s tired, she likes to relax at the spa, where it has a special area reserved to her. She’s usually alone but sometimes she’s accompanied by her only friends Sherry and lady Florentine from Mount Velvet. The latter allowed Margaux to use an innovative transparent material for her dress, which is a particular glass fiber, exclusively developed on Mount Velvet, that can be folded as a fabric with the downside to being as frail as silk is.

She doesn’t attend the casino and visits it only to control how business is going: she finds the games boring, also because she already knows every combination necessary to win. Margaux doesn’t like vulgar people or sloppiness, so she doesn’t allow casual clothes nor dirty cars in her reign, a law that also her subjects have been demanding for long.

Despite living with the utmost leisure, Margaux feels lonely in her overly luxurious palace, ever since her parents died when she was already an adult. She isn’t shown to have interest in a partner and isn’t fond of animals.

She has trust issues regarding friendships because she feels they mostly want her money rather than her own company. She only relies on her loyal advisor, Dom and lady Florentine, to whom she acts like a mentor. Her mentorship abilities also benefit Sherry, the daughter of the second richest Perignon’s family who is Margaux’s closest admirer. The Queen, during a period she was overly worried about her passing, saw in her a potential successor: they share a tender friendship, even though Margaux still doesn’t fully trust her.

After Wario helped to save Perignon, she still feels grateful to him, and remained on good terms, even though she continuously laments his hygienic habits and is reluctant to even touch him. She is in diplomatic good terms with Princess Peach and the Mushroom Kingdom, to which she lends money, having also a good opinion of Mario.

About Perignon

The reign of Perignon is a small archipelago formed by five islands. It’s located on the north of Bubblaine, which used to be a part of the kingdom in the past. It's ruled by Queen Margaux, who is also the owner of the Casino, the main economic center of the kingdom and the main tourist attraction .

The main population consists of the local species of Perignonnes, which resemble lobsters and who are at risk of extinction for their low number of births. Other common species consist of Bubblainians, humans and anyone who can afford to live there.

Unlike most Mario species, Perignonnes aren’t overtly hostile but they’re not friendly either: they’re usual to indirectly express their snobbish attitude towards the high number of visitors, divided by tourists and commuters who mainly work at the Casino and the Hot Springs. The ridiculously low tax burden also makes it the ideal place for tax evaders to deposit the money.

Being among the richest places in the Mario World, it's not unusual for Perignon to lend money to other reigns, including the Mushroom Kingdom, while annoying the Queen and the residents. Doing so, it guarantees a certain relevance among Mario world.

Perignon is a place heavily characterized by its ostentation of money and luxury: even the water surrounding the islands, has a golden appearance, similar to champagne and the beaches' sand have a golden look as well. It's commonly held in belief that this is a stunt to show off the exclusivity of the place but it's also true that the water is rich in sulfates, which enhance the unique color which is still mostly obtained artificially.

Perignonans have a fine eye for aesthetics: their architecture is characterized by golden swirls and water motifs, similar to Art Nouveau, with Margaux’s castle, the casino and the hot springs, which are located on the separate island of Champagne, a mountain shaped like a bottle of wine: inside it, there's a complex pipe system used to transport the groundwater up to the top. During festivities, the mountain directly erupts water in a suggestive spectacle. On the inside there’s the spa.

While there isn’t an overt income cap, you can’t access Perignon if you aren’t properly dressed or don’t possess a well kept car or boat. There are still chances to visit on a ferry which starts from Bubblaine or during planned cruises.
