Kuroki is a 19-year-old boy who lived in our modern-day Japan before he got transported to ancient Hisui. Knowing nothing of Pokemon or the world he landed in, he would later wonder why Arceus would chose him of all people to bring through space-time. Before coming to Hisui, he was a shut-in and a social recluse who had little to no experience with people. He lived alone, having emancipated from his birth family. He is also extremely shy and has trouble speaking to others. He often speaks only in a few words or less until he is used to the person he’s speaking with. Paired with his resting angry face, he comes off as cold and unapproachable to those that don’t know him well.
Despite his lack of social graces or likeability, Professor Laventon took him under his wing when he came through the rift and gave him his first Pokémon, Oshawott. Kuroki got attached to the professor, viewing him as a father figure and one of the few people he trusts. Along the course of the events of Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Kuroki also becomes close friends with Adaman and Akari, the latter of whom he views as a little sister. Through the people he cares about, he learns to open up and become less shy, though he still remains rather distant from people. The only people allowed to call him by his given name are the Professor, Akari and Adaman, though he’s still mostly referred to as Kuroki anyway.
Kuroki ended up (unintentionally) with an all dark-type team, which Akari teases him about all the time. His ace is Honchkrow, who he nursed back to health when it was just a Murkrow with a broken wing. When he was first brought to Hisui, Kuroki’s hair was a lot shorter and he had no scar. The scar on his face is from one of his first trips out to the Fieldlands, where he was attacked by an alpha Pokémon. While at first a source of shame and embarrassment, he learned to live with his scar. By the time the crisis in Hisui had been resolved, his hair had grown out significantly and he decided to keep it that way.

Notes
- He loves ‘cute’ pokemon, but somehow ended up with a full team of dark types and they grew on him.
- Typically seen in his Survey Corps uniform, though he does wear the Honchkrow kimono set or any of the dark clothes offered by the tailor.
- Terrible with nicknames, but gives them to each member of his team. Adaman and Akari make fun of him relentlessly for his nicknames.
- Decorates the inside of his home with drawings of the pokemon he's seen. There's paper and ink everywhere inside.
- Genuinely considered Volo a friend, and was deeply hurt by his betrayal. Closed off for a while afterwards.
