I've never seen anything so beautifully pitch. Your hair is like the night sky.

About

Created by Queen Lumera out of natural resources for the purpose of combat practice. Similar in both power and awareness to a corrupted, most fabrications are puppets to be programmed or controlled. Firian, however, developed sentience and free will. Though not fully human, she is learning to feel and think like one. Due to her lack of humanity, she communicates far better with animals than other people, as most castle knights find her creepy and unsettling. Animals, however, sense only the natural resources comprising her body, as opposed to sanguine flesh and bone, and feel as comfortable approaching her as they might the shade of a tree or the warmth of a sunlit boulder.

Unbeknownst to the people around her, Firian was modeled after one of Lumera's late siblings, named Arthemis. Lumera secretly made many fabrications modeled after her lost family, and many of them, like Firian, had the potential to survive. The only one who would know this is Lumera, and any stewards curious enough to read her journals.

Personality

Having the awareness of an adult with the objective knowledge of a newborn, Firian is very curious, with a strong yet rudimentary sense of right and wrong. This leads her to approach most things gently and cautiously. She has very little problem approaching people she's familiar with, and can even get physically clingy, holding onto their arm and holding their hand as if it's completely normal. In fact, Firian does many things that might come off as overly affectionate without realizing the implication, since she doesn't quite understand the emotions attached to those behaviors.

Design notes

Her glowing cyan eyes and cerulean hair were taken from the Fabrication enemy type in Fire Emblem Engage. As a Fabrication, herself, she initially wore Lythos plate armour. The outfit she's most often depicted in is, in-universe, something she put together after gaining awareness. The glowing cyan accents change color depending on her energy level, changing to yellow when she's growing tired and a faint magenta color when she's nearly completely fatigued.

Her name is a bastardization of Firion, the primary protagonist of Final Fantasy II, who is also mostly clad in blue. Her wolfs name is Marian, a portmanteau of Firian and Maria, Maria being another primary character in FFII.

The butterfly on her headband is made of a transparent iridescent fabric with fiber-optic strands throughout the wings to project her power level color. Butterflies often represent death and rebirth, and in this case, represents her new life as a synthetic human. In another sense, it represents that, after death, Firian will not leave a soul like the Emblems did, and cannot be summoned by future generations. Another life-related motif could be that she is ostensibly immortal, insofar as not being susceptible to illness or deterioration. Her body could very well be destroyed, however.

Backstory

Created by Queen Lumera out of natural resources to help train Lythos guards in combat with other humans. While hundreds of fabrications like her were made and destroyed prior to her, Firian somehow survived long enough to form a sentience. She attached herself to Yarrow, an axe wielder working under Lumera, and has resolved to learn from him how to feel and socialize like a human. Others would become involved in Firian's quest to become human, but Yarrow would be her rock through most of it.

Spoiler for late game FE Engage:

32nd Steward of the Divine Dragon, Vander, would discover photos, sketches, and written descriptions of Lumera's late family who were slaughtered during the war 1000 years ago, with Firian's visage among Lumera and other less familiar faces. Upon reading her more recent journal entries before her death, she had confessed something that would explain the similarities.

A grieving Lumera, with the ability to summon humanoids from almost nothing, would create fabrications in the likeness of her family. Firian was in the likeness of Lumera's sister, Arthemis. Seeing her families faces again helped sooth the pain of their deaths, but seeing them slaughtered by her own guard over and over again was too much to bear. Thus did she decide to imbue Firian with a touch of Divine Dragon power to help her survive practice skirmishes.

Trivia

  • This character goes against so many of my design staples, such as having the initials S.S. or being punk rock in some way.
  • Firian is depicted in many ways as an android despite being a magical confluence of plants and rocks, closer in concept to a golem. Although one could also argue circuit boards are made of funky sand, so she might as well be a computer girl.
  • I draw her with an emblem ring on her necklace and have an emblem that can ostensibly be summoned from it but there is no canon reasoning for this so it never comes up lmao
  • I really wanted to move away from Final Fantasy for a little bit but I still named her after a Final Fantasy character because I'm mentally ill.
  • It's not so much that this character has no gender, but is moreso that she does not understand the concept of gender.
    • Functionally she will answer to any pronouns, but gets confused when people refer to her as a man.
    • "It" is also acceptable, if only because she understands she is not fully human, and that some people will see her as an object moreso than a peer.
