Areos

Back in ancient times, below the surface spanned a massive city-scape. Protected from the elements that contaminated the surface, humans lived their best lives alongside each other. But people weren't always kind to each other. A secret group conspired to raise an otherworldly evil.. After centuries of living underground, humanity faced a mass extinction as a creature only known as "The Warden" was unleashed upon the great city. With it brought a parasite that consumed the underground. Very few humans escaped the event, taking to the surface that was once uninhabitable.
Areos lived in the Great Underground before the events of the warden were unleashed on the world. He was always very adventurous, and spent most of his time with Vulpex. Vulpex was always searching for a way out of the underground, and Areos spent his time looking into the stories of other dimensions. When Areos heard of the conspiracy brewing to bring forth another creature from another world, he grew wary. Fearing his life, and the lives of everyone he's come to know, would end he attempted to stop the plan. Areos went to his closest friend, Vulpex, asking for his help. Vulpex shot him down, telling him it was nothing but talk and rumors, that nothing was actually happening. But the more Areos watched the more he saw the plan unfolding right before his eyes. On the day of the wardens release, he attempted to shut down the portal, only to be confronted by Vulpex. Vulpex tried to explain to Areos why this was a good thing, an escape from the underground, but Areos felt betrayed by his friend. He reached for the portal power source, as did Vulpex. Just as the two grabbed the source, the portal opened and the warden was released. The power source blew, throwing Vulpex and Areos far away from the portal. Areos landed in a bed of moss that soon began to consume him, growing over his skin and most of his face. He watched the warden attacking the city as he lay there, unable to help or move.
 
Somehow, Areos opened his eyes one day after the events. He still lay in the pile of moss, but instead of being surrounded by stone and walls there was a strange substance on the ground. It seemed to blow in a breeze that didn't exist and looked almost alive. Areos stood up and looked around the broken city in sadness. No longer was it a bustling and lively place, instead the caves had grown dark and eerie. As Areos explored he began finding things strange. Carpet lined walkways, as if someone was trying to muffle their steps. There wasn't a single living thing nearby, no bats flew overhead, and no glow squids swam in the lake. And then Areos saw a massive creature lumbering around. He trudged right past Areos, as if he couldn't see him. Areos watched the creature walk away into the darkness. His old home was no longer safe. Areos had to get to the surface.

Areos emerged from the cave entrance, blinded by the light and surprised at all the life that was growing up there. He began exploring, and soon noticed signs of life. Villages scattered around, small houses build within the woods, towers laying host to hostile creatures. While scavenging around outside a village, Areos discovered a baby llama. Curious about the creature, he decided to take it with him. And so began his life on the surface, wary of those living up there.
