Art Notes

Fashion (Clothing):

  • Tunics and breeches, kaftans, and sashes. Mid-late medieval (pre-Renaissance!) with some Viking age influences, and slight Korean and eastern European influences in the robes and kaftans.
  • Generally tattered and poor. Feel free to put him in very simple garb.
Appearance:
  • Face is round and almost boyish with low cheekbones. He does NOT have a chiseled, heroic appearance.
  • Hair can be depicted loose or in a topknot, ponytail, or braid. His hair is dirty blond (I know the color tends to drift in my art).
  • Face can be depicted clean-shaven or with stubble or a beard.
  • Green eyes, can be grey-green.
  • Good amount of body hair. (But no back hair.)
  • Broad-shouldered stature. Thick with useful muscle. No visible abs.
  • Appears 30s to 50s.
  • Wields a falchion and a large shield.
Scars:
  • An ugly slash from his chin to just below his eye, crossing his mouth and warping his expressions. It is usually a little raw looking, and affects his expressions. (Originally this scar was depicted as a cut descending from under his left eye, but I've since updated it.)
  • Three overlapping rope scars on his left ankle (varying ages).
  • Forearms and hands are covered in slashes and punctures (from crows' beaks and claws).
  • Notched right eyebrow and nicked left ear.
  • Other scars can be added as you wish.
Personality:
  • Subservient to authority.
  • Generally soft-spoken.
  • Patient and stoic.
  • Blushy, easy to fluster.
  • Easily manipulated.
  • Picks at his scars.
  • Haunted by waking nightmares. Often sees the faces of loved ones and soldiers he has lost.
  • Archaic mannerisms and speech. (Shakespearian or Chaucerian English is an easy way to emulate this--thee, thou, etc.)
  • Uncomfortable near deep water, especially in his armor.
  • War flashbacks triggered by many things, but notably rapidly growing or moving vines and plants, or suddenly confronting or smelling plants when he isn't expecting it.

Interaction/Scene Ideas:

  • Drinking.
  • Singing.
  • Walking.
  • Singing while walking.
  • Playing stones (Go) or tiles (a mahjong-like game).
  • Standing guard.
  • Looking awkward at court.
  • Helping someone into their armor (or vice versa).
  • Dressing wounds.
  • Fighting/getting beat up.
  • Hanging upside down from his left ankle.

The Hanged Man is a mysterious figure who always travels west, until he is distracted by duty or adventure. Whenever asked about his destination he says he is searching for "the Lord of the Lances," though it's unclear who this man was, if he ever even existed. Crows seem to follow him everywhere he goes. Sometimes he seems mysterious and wise beyond his years, while others he seems little more than a pathetic mess, dependent on drink to get him through the long nights.

The Hanged Man has a grim sort of appearance, and some have claimed him to be a psychopomp who leads soldiers into what comes after. It is clear he has known many years of warfare, and he often is plagued by nightmares. He wears dark, antique armor which is usually hidden under a voluminous hooded mantle. At his side he carries a black-bladed falchion with a garnet set in the pommel, as well as an oversized kite shield painted or covered in burlap to hide the device emblazoned upon it. His arms are scarred terribly and at times twitch, freeze, or spasm--he often covers them with heavy leather gloves or gauntlets. He favors his left leg when he walks and may use his shield like a crutch. Contrasting his grizzled appearance are his facial features, which are rather rounded and boyish, though the years of wandering have made them a little gaunter.

His fighting style is very defensive. He is well practiced with his shield and frequently incorporates it into his offense via bashes and shoves. He is capable of taking a tremendous amount of abuse, far more than seems possible for a mortal man. His armaments seem impossible to sunder. Due to his limp, he almost always pivots from his right foot, and lacks any kind of great agility. At times his mangled hands cause him difficulty when fighting, but he has learned to compensate and use those tics and spasms to confuse his opponent.

Usually the Hanged Man is at peace with himself and his quest, content to wander the worlds and help people in need. But there are also periods of darkness, wherein he has given in to despair or desparation, possibly even resorting to villainy for a chance to see his beloved lord again. Occasionally he will serve as a knight in various courts, sometimes for days and sometimes for decades. At heart he is a quiet man, haunted and occasionally full of angst, though amiable and profoundly lonely. Although he has promised to never again be caught in the traps of charismatic kings, history longs to repeat itself. He is drawn to confidence and power and is easy to manipulate if the right leverage is applied. Generally he is subservient to those in positions of command--a holdout from his past he has been unable to shake--but he has not forgotten nor does he regret the actions that led to him being branded oathbreaker. Impressions are all that remain of early lives, most names long-faded by mists of time.
