ABOUT
"Intrusive thoughts? The Infection? Sometimes I can't tell."
When the Infection spread to the edges of Hallownest, Hive Queen Vespa assembled a council to repel the Infection from the Hive. Nectar, due to his intimidating size and quick thinking, was chosen to lead the Council. During a spell, Nectar saw how the Infection would indeed be sealed, at the cost of his own life to a slow, brutal death. He had to figure out a way to stop it.
Years later, they are all dead, and Nectar has nearly been infected. Something has gone horribly wrong to irreversibly change Nectar forever, both physically and mentally. Nectar is very shut in and quiet, tries to avoid speaking to others at any cost, but has a soft, sweet interior beneath the rocky layers of self-loathing. He believes he is responsible and to blame for the death of his closest friends and family.. but is he right?
Nectar is one of the tallest bugs, possibly in Hallownest. He comes from a lineage of large bees, known as the Megachile Family. His stinger is loaded with a whole deadly load of nothing- but it will hurt. He wears a red-velvet silk robe on him at all times to cover his Infected scars and cuts, along with to hide his own face with the hood it has at the top. He wields a gilded sword, gifted to him by Queen Vespa that he keeps as a reminder of what he did.
DESIGN
- Nectar is, of course, very tall.
- He is about 60% infected, yet manages to restrain physical control from the Infection.
- His gilded sword is about as tall as him from the bottom half of his torso to the bottom of his feet.
- He has 2 larger compound eyes and 3 smaller eyes right in the middle of them, like an actual bee.
BACKGROUND
LINEAGE
Nectar's lineage is notorious for being very big, heavy bees that were perfect for construction and leadership, often making them some of the higher ranking families in the Hive. Many of his ancestors were responsible for building large structures inside of the hive without even needing to fly with their wings, and were barely able to fit in the narrower hallways of the hive. Because of this, the Hive was constructed with many large, open spaces, and the narrower spaces had very high ceilings- which proved to be beneficial for other bees too, allowing more use for flying inside of the Hive.
THE COUNCIL
During the Infection's first reign of havoc upon Hallownest, as the Pale King began to devise a plan to seal the Infection, Hive Queen Vespa was already two steps ahead of him. She formed a Council of the greatest scholars, sages, inventors, artists, and mathematicians known to the Hive, resulting in 9 Councilors- Apis, the Artist; Pythagoras, the youngest of the Councilors and the Architect; Hy, short for Hymenoptera, the Mathematician; Bombus, the short-tempered Inventor- Psithyrus, the Doctor; Apoidea, the Author; Collet, the Sage; Andren, the Musician; and of course, Nectar, the Scholar. Queen Vespa hoped that they would be able to find an old secret or hidden weakness that they could use to seal, or repel, the Infection.
THE PARADE
One morning, the Council was called to Vespa's chambers to perform a spell on Nectar so that he could foresee the future and how succesful sealing the Radiance would be. He saw that while the sealing ritual would work, Nectar would die a brutal, slow, agonizing death to the Infection. He lied to the other Councilors, saying that it all turned out well. "White lies are better than harsh truths," he believed. Nectar spent days studying and inventing another way. Once the day of the Parade came, Nectar created an improvised mechanism to jab him with a needle at the time he believed the spell would begin, to wake him up. However, the Radiance had already made her way into the chambers of the Hive. One by one, the citizens were picked off, as Nectar barely escaped the Radiance's grasp. He constructed a small chamber in the Hive for him to live in to escape from the horrors he'd accidentally commited.
RELATIONSHIPS (ALWAYS OPEN)
"Sometimes, whenever I put something down for just a second, I come back to see a tiny little Vessel- and I don't just mean tiny for me, I mean TINY- trying to steal my things. Every time I put them down, they pick it back up again. They're very amusing. Oh, how I wish I could talk to vessels.. I wish I could see what goes on in that tiny little mind of theirs! Luckily for me, it can write."
"Occasionally, a traveling couple of fellows- a Mantis and a Vessel- will stop by the Hive. I haven't talked to them yet, but they seem nice. That Vessel one has a very long nail, though... wouldn't want to be on the other end."

"Whenever I leave the Hive, I often visit a nice beetle. He's very relaxed and a delight to talk to. I believe his name was Athus? I have so many thoughts nowadays, it's hard to recall.. He's very sweet. Nice way to unwind after a long day in this barren Hive."
"Eugh, that Hive Knight.. Of all the lovely bees in the Hive, like Apis or Hym, the only one who wasn't infected was THAT pretentious fool!? Always guarding that sacred chamber of Vespa's... but the Queen is dead, brother, and nobody is coming to save us."

"That Vessel is quite a handful, no? Sometimes they do act out, show off a more aggressive side. I know I shouldn't go as easy on them.. but I can't bring myself to. I know what it's like, to be constantly fighting for control of yourself."
"I know that all the blame is on me, to let the Infection in.. I wonder what would've happened if I had never woken up that day? Would the Hive be the savior of Hallownest? Would it have grown into a thriving city?.. It's.. all my fault, isn't it?"

TRIVIA
- Nectar's infected eyes are permanently tinted orange, making half of his vision a very orange reality. Or, as I like to call it, "Mexico In Movies" mode.
- Nectar's only method of communicating with Crepe is the paper he has scavenged from the Hive.
- Nectar's family name, Megachile, comes from the largest species of bee in the world.
- The only uninfected remaining Hive Bee is the Hive Knight, whom Nectar hates with a passion. Ironic.
